Releasing the Anointing

Pastor Keith Hassell

Foundation Scripture:  2 Kings 2:9-15

I.       Double Portion

A.      Means a “double share” not a “double anointing”

B.      This was the share of the firstborn, the one directly responsible to care for the father’s house

II.      The Double Portion Myth

          A.      Mathematics of the Double Portion Myth

                   1.       Brother A receives 2X

                   2.       Brother B receives 4X

                   3.       Brother C receives 8X

                   4.       Brother D receives 16X

                   5.       Brother E receives 32X

                   6.       Brother F receives 64X

                   7.       Brother G receives 128X

                   8.       Brother H receives 256X

                   9.       Brother I receives 512X

                   10.     Brother J receives 1,024X

          B.      Where is the power?  Where are the healings and miracles?

III.     Operating under another man’s anointing?

A.      We can operate under the anointing of the person we serve in ministry (Elisha, Jesus’ disciples)

B.      We can receive impartations of spiritual gifting from others

1.       Romans 1:11  “For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift, so that you may be established.”

C.      We can inherit a person’s anointing if we inherit their ministry when they leave this earth (Elisha, Jesus’ disciples)

D.      We cannot inherit another person’s mantle while they are here

E.      Elisha inherited Elijah’s mantle when he left in order to finish the ministry and work of Elijah

IV.     We have the anointing within

A.      I John 2:27  “But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.”

B.      Romans 8:9  “But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you.  Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.”

C.      Galatians 5:22-23  The fruits of the Spirit flow out of the anointing within

VI.     We are to receive the anointing upon

A.      Luke 3:21-22  The Holy Spirit came upon Jesus like a dove (Jesus received a mantle from the Father)

B.      Luke 4:1  Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit

C.      Luke 4:18  The Spirit of the Lord was upon Jesus because God has anointed Him (Jesus was ready now for ministry)

D.      Acts 1:8  We are to receive the mantle of Jesus for ministry

E.      John 14:12-14  “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do because I go to My Father.  And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.  If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.”

VII.    Lessons in the wilderness (Dealing with fleshly impulses)

A.      Luke 4:1-13  Addressing the abuses of the anointing

1.       To live off of the anointing

          a.       Man is to live by the word of God

2.       To sell out the anointing to the highest bidder

          a.       Man is to worship and serve the Lord only

b.       Matthew 10:8b  “Freely you have received, freely give.”

c.       2 Kings 5:20-27  Gehazi sells the anointing and receives the plague of Leprosy

                   3.       To misuse the anointing

                             a.       Man is not to tempt the Lord his God

                             b.       The anointing is to confirm the word, not the minister

c.       The anointing does not approve the minister (Matthew 7:21ff)

          B.      Jesus returned in the POWER of the Spirit

1.       Luke 4:14-15 “Then Jesus returned in the POWER of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region.  And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.”

2.       Many may be filled with the Spirit but fail to experience the POWER of the Spirit because they fail the tests of the wilderness

VIII.  Releasing the Anointing

          A.      You must know that the Anointed One lives in you

          B.      You must repent of any sin that blocks your fellowship with God

D.      You must receive the baptism with the Holy Spirit

          E.      You must know that God will release His anointing through YOU

          F.      The anointing works according to your level of faith

                   1.       Faith comes by hearing

                   2.       Faith comes by seeing

                   3.       Faith comes by doing

                   4.       Faith increases as you use what you have

G.      The anointing works according to your obedience

1.       The anointing will increase as you obey.  It decreases when you disobey.

2.       Obedience is dependent upon your knowledge of the Scriptures and of the Father’s will

          H.      The anointing flows to confirm God’s word

                   1.       If you want the anointing to work, preach the word

          I.       The anointing flows as we testify of Jesus

                   1.       If you want the anointing to work, then testify of Jesus

J.       The anointing flows from the compassion of Jesus

          K.      The anointing flows from His presence

1.       The presence of God changes you, but it takes the anointing to demonstrate Jesus in you to the world

2.       How do we experience His presence?

          a.       Prayer

          b.       Praise and worship

3.       We must continually be filled (Ephesians 5:18) “And do not be drunk with wine in which is dissipation; but be filled with Spirit.”

4.       Benny Hinn:  “Many people want the power of God but fail to understand that it will not come until they first experience His presence…It goes like this: the presence of God is the vehicle that brings the power.  Power follows the presence, not the other way around.”
