INTRODUCTION:

1. The past two weeks, we have talked about misconceptions.

A. In the first lesson, we learned about misconceptions about biblical authority.

1. We learned that these misconceptions must not be relied upon as our authority when answering biblical questions.

Romans 11:25 NKJV
For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.
John 8:32 NKJV
32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

A. These misconceptions are:

1. My personal likes, dislikes, opinions, or what pleases me.
2. What is popular.
3. My inability to “see any harm in it”.
4. Long-standing practice.
5. My feelings.
6. Silence of the Scriptures.

B. In the second lesson, we learned that misconceptions lead to division.

1. When these misconceptions are relied upon for biblical authority, they divide the church.

1 Corinthians 1:10–13 NKJV
10 Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. 11 For it has been declared to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of Chloe’s household, that there are contentions among you. 12 Now I say this, that each of you says, “I am of Paul,” or “I am of Apollos,” or “I am of Cephas,” or “I am of Christ.” 13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?
1 Cor. 1.10-

A. Anytime a misconception is believed over the truth, it is harmful for the church.

John 17:17 NKJV
17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.

B. Any time a misconception divides the church, it is sinful, because Christ’s plea for unity and oneness through His Word is ignored.

John 17:11 NKJV
11 Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are.
Jn 17.20-
John 17:20–23 NKJV
20 “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; 21 that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22 And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: 23 I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.

C. In the third lesson, we are going to learn that the church is to be constructed on the basis of biblical authority.

1. In this lesson, we are going to answer three questions.

A. Who is to build the church?

B. What is the church to be built upon?

C. How is the church to be built?

D. How is the Church to be built?

BODY:

1. WHO IS TO BUILD THE CHURCH?

Matthew 16:18 NKJV
18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

A. The “I will build My church” answers this question.

1. The words “I” and “My” say two things.

A. One, Jesus, by using the word “I”, said that He personally would build the church.

Acts 2:47 NKJV
47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.

B. Two, Jesus, by using the word “My”, claimed ownership to the church.

Acts 20:28 NKJV
28 Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.

B. This is the first question that must be answered when discussing biblical authority.

1. Often times, I think we get the answer confused as to who has the right to build the church.

A. This is shown by all the different names on the buildings which claim to be His church.

1. Christ is the only One who deserves any credit for the building of the church.
2. His name and His name alone should be the only name on the church, for He owns it and He built it.
Romans 16:16 NKJV
16 Greet one another with a holy kiss. The churches of Christ greet you.
Ephesians 1:14 NKJV
14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.
Eph 1.14

2. WHAT IS THE CHURCH TO BE BUILT UPON?

Matthew 16:18 NKJV
18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

A. Some believe that the “rock” in this verse referred to Peter.

1. This is where the doctrine that Peter was the first pope comes from.

2. If you look at the context and original language, however, this doctrine is refuted.

Matthew 16:13–20 NKJV
13 When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” 14 So they said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” 20 Then He commanded His disciples that they should tell no one that He was Jesus the Christ.
Matt 16.

A. Jesus asked the disciples a question: “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?”

B. They answered, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

C. Jesus would ask the question again, desiring this time to know who they thought He was: “But who do you say that I am?”

D. Peter would answer, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

E. Jesus would answer Peter, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.”

F. Jesus would answer the same question back to Peter in verse 18a, “And I also say to you that you are Peter.”

1. Why would Jesus answer this question back to Peter?
A. Peter was impulsive and sometimes got a big head, it seems; sometimes, he thought he always had the answer.
Remember when Jesus told Peter, “Assuredly, I say to you that this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”?
A. Peters response to that was, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” ()
2. Remember when Peter cut off the ear of Malchus and Jesus reattached it? ()
B. Jesus, knowing this, told Peter he was a small rock, for his name in Greek is Petros, which means ‘small rock’.

G. Jesus, in verse 18b, would make contrast from the small rock, Peter “petros” to the large rock, “petra” on which the church would be built.

1. In Jesus used the word “petra” refers to Himself as the rock.
the word “petra” refers to Jesus as the rock.
Matthew 7:24–27 NKJV
24 “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: 25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. 26 “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: 27 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”
Matt 7.

B. The church is to be built upon Jesus.

1 Corinthians 3:11 NKJV
11 For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

1. If anyone lays any other foundation, they build upon the sand.

Matthew 7:26 NKJV
26 “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand:

A. If the house is built upon the sand, it falls apart.

Matthew 7:27 NKJV
27 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”
Matt

3. HOW IS THE CHURCH TO BE BUILT?

Matthew 7:24 NKJV
24 “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock:

A. The Church is built on the authority of Christ’s Word.

Matthew 7:26 NKJV
26 “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand:

1. Notice, “whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them” builds on the foundation.

Colossians 3:17 NKJV
17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

A. explains when we do the sayings of the Lord, we are building the church in the name of the Lord.

2. Jesus is building the church, and he does this by His Word.

Matthew 16:18 NKJV
18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.
MAtt

A. In He instructs His disciples to “Go” and lay the foundation for the church.

Mark 16:15–16 NKJV
15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.
Mark 16:15 NKJV
15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.

B. Then in He tells the disciples that ‘whoever hears My words and does them will be added to this foundation,’ so Jesus can build the church from the saved.

Mark 16:16 NKJV
16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.
Acts 2:47 NKJV
47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.

C. We continue to maintain the church that Jesus built and allow Jesus to add more bricks by allowing biblical authority to be the basis for the continued construction of the church.

Eph 2.
Ephesians 2:19–22 NKJV
19 Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.

D. The apostles and the inspired writers of the New Testament laid the foundation for the church, so the church can be constructed on the basis of biblical authority and nothing else.

1 Timothy 3:15–16 NKJV
15 but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. 16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, Justified in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Preached among the Gentiles, Believed on in the world, Received up in glory.
2 Timothy 2:15 NKJV
15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
2 Timothy 3:16–17 NKJV
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
2 Peter 1:3 NKJV
3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue,

CONCLUSION:

1. Will you put away misconceptions that lead to division?

2. Will you allow Christ to be the foundation for the church?

3. Will you allow Christ to build His church?

A. By allowing biblical authority to be the basis for its construction?

1. If you will allow this to happen, Christ will unite His people and build His church.
