Notes & Transcripts
THESIS: To consider the duties God has planned for women to be good and godly wives.
INTRODUCTION
God had a plan in mind when He instituted marriage and the family. Deciding to marry is an important decision that can have significant consequences (; ). With that being the case, we must learn what God would have us to do when it comes to marriage. Let us consider some things about God’s design for being good and godly wives.

DISCUSSION
I.
In fact, because a woman reverences Christ she will have deep respect and admiration for her husband and especially one who exercises his headship in the sacrificial love of Christ.
RESPECT YOUR HUSBAND
God’s design for wives is that they respect their husband () . Instead of “respect” many translations have “fear” or “reverence.” Yet this is not fear of a tyrant, but as one commentator observed, “the fear of the Church for Christ—which is the pattern of the fear of the wife for her husband—is no slavish fear, but a fear of reverence.”[1] This is about authority and roles and not about her worth, value, or ability. Consider Sarah, who called Abraham “Lord” and yet was still at ease in speaking her mind and feelings to him (; ; ). The wife’s respect for her husband is a reflection of the believer’s reverence for Christ (). If you would be a godly wife, respect your husband.

SUBMIT TO YOUR HUSBAND
The wife’s respect for her husband stems from his role in the family (). God has made man the head of the family, and therefore it is the wife’s duty to submit to his leadership (; ; ; ). Notice that her submission is compared to the church’s relationship to Christ. Her submission to her husband doesn’t imply she is inferior nor does it imply that her husband is always right, yet God expects her to submit to him. This is about God’s plan and purpose in creation and respect for Him and for the authority He established. (; , ). Of course, a man’s rule and his wife’s submission is “as to the Lord” and not for selfish and sinful pursuits (cp. ). It is because of her fear and love for the Lord that she submits and obeys her husband (; cp. ). If you would be a godly wife, submit to your husband.

LOVE YOUR HUSBAND
God also planned that wives would love their husbands (). Interestingly, the word for love in the Greek is philandros, which means affection for one’s husband. It is a kind of love that can be taught to younger women by older women. Remember, marriage is a relationship that is designed by God to bring joy to the man and the woman by providing lifelong companionship (). Just as God expects the husband to love, cherish, and honor his wife, the wife must do the same. Even though there will be times when it will not be easy to love and to cherish him, God expects you to work together and to love your husband. Do not take him for granted, but encourage him and help him to serve the Lord together (). If you would be a godly wife, love your husband.

IV. BE FAITHFUL TO YOUR HUSBAND
Marriage is a committed relationship between one man and one woman where physical and emotional intimacy are good and holy. Just as God expects a man to leave and cleave to his wife, so God desires that a wife be faithful to her husband (). God’s design for the wife is for her to be faithful to her husband and to not be sexually intimate with anyone else (). The challenge in our society is for women to guard their hearts and minds from all of the sexual temptation that permeates our daily lives (cp. ). Instead of being lured into temptation, a woman must commit herself to be true to her husband and to save herself for him and no other (). If you would be a godly wife, be faithful to your husband.

CONCLUSION
The woman who fears God and fulfills these duties will be praised (). As women who are trying to live godly lives and influence others to do the same, you must recognize your responsibilities before God. As wives, you have been given a great role in marriage (; ). These are just a few of the things God teaches that will help women become the excellent wives God wants them to be. Sisters, how are you doing in these areas? What can you do in them to improve? May God help you take your responsibilities to Him and to your husband seriously.
