To consider the duties God has planned for women to be good and godly wives.

Notes & Transcripts
THESIS: To consider the way God teaches women to be good and godly wives.
INTRODUCTION
God had a plan in mind when He instituted marriage and the family. Deciding to marry is an important decision that can have significant consequences (1 Kings 11:1-10; 1 Cor. 15:33). With that being the case, we must learn what God would have us to do when it comes to marriage. Let us consider some things about God’s design for being good and godly wives.
DISCUSSION
SHE IS A BLESSING
The virtues of the “Proverbs 31” woman begin with the question, “An excellent wife who can find” (Prov. 31:10)? God’s word says that the excellent, capable, virtuous wife is of immense value. She is rare and is more precious than rubies or jewels. In marriage, the woman is to complement what is lacking in the husband. She is to be his helper and companion (Gen. 2:18). A wife’s character and behavior should bring good and not harm into the life of her husband (cp. Prov. 31:12; 27:15). If you would be a godly wife, then strive to be a blessing and not a curse to your husband (cp. 1 Kings 21:25).
SHE IS HONORABLE
Part of the reason a good wife is such a blessing is because she brings honor to her husband (Prov. 31:23). When you consider the whole of what is said in Proverbs 31, the worthy wife is one who is industrious, hardworking, and takes care of her home and her responsibilities. Because of her hard work and noble character, she is respected by her husband and in turn, he is respected by others (1 Pet. 3:1-6). In marriage, a wife’s attitude and behavior should enhance her husbands’ status and reputation and not harm it (cp. 1 Tim. 3:11; 5:14). If you would be a godly wife, then strive to bring honor and not shame to your husband (Prov. 12:4).
SHE IS TRUSTWORTHY
Not only does God intend for a wife to be honorable in her conduct but she should be trustworthy (Prov. 31:11). She should be faithful in every aspect of her marriage. She should be faithful to her vows and not be flirtatious, immodest, or intimate with any other person except her husband (cp. Prov. 7:19; Gen 39:7). In a marriage, a man should be able to have full confidence in his wife with his name, his reputation, his trust, his money, and his children (cp. Judg. 14:15-17; 1 Tim. 3:11). If you would be a godly wife, then strive to be faithful and true to your husband so that he has complete confidence in you.
SHE IS GENEROUS
The good and godly wife is generous, not only to her own husband and children, but to others (Prov. 31:20). Marriage calls for selflessness and the capacity to love another more than oneself. Love for the Lord calls on one to be able to be generous not just with one’s own but with others who are in need (Luke 6:32-36). In marriage, a wife should not be driven by greed and a desire to improve her own situation, but to be merciful and giving (cp. Acts 9:36; 1 Tim. 5:9-10). If you would be a godly wife, then strive to be generous to others (Prov. 19:17).
SHE IS DILIGENT
The woman who would have the qualities possessed by the worthy woman of Proverbs will be one who is diligent in all she does (Prov. 31:13-27). The old saying “Idle hands are the devil’s workshop” is true (1 Tim. 5:13). The responsibilities of marriage and the home are numerous and demanding on a woman as a wife and mother. In marriage, a wife should work hard alongside her husband and not be lazy or slack in fulfilling her God given role (Acts 18:1-3; 26; cp. 2 Thess. 3:10-12). If you would be a godly wife, then strive to be diligent in your service to your husband, your family, and above all your Lord (Col. 3:23).
CONCLUSION
The woman who fears God and shows these qualities will be praised (Prov. 31:28-31). As women who are trying to live godly lives and influence others to do the same, you must recognize your responsibilities before God. As wives, you have been given a great role in marriage (Gen. 2:18; Prov. 31:23). These are just a few of the things God teaches that will help women become the excellent wives God wants them to be. Sisters, how are you doing in these areas? What can you do in them to improve? May God help you take your responsibilities to Him and to your husband seriously.
