Engage

Question: Have you ever done something good, but with selfish motives?
Illustration: My OCD doesn’t let me not make the bed

Tension

We want to do good, and help others. But, our motives aren’t always in the right place.
Doing good for the wrong reasons can be exhausting (obsessively anxious).
Doing good to serve Jesus brings us joy and cheer.

Truth & Application

Philippians 2:20–24 NLT
I have no one else like Timothy, who genuinely cares about your welfare. All the others care only for themselves and not for what matters to Jesus Christ. But you know how Timothy has proved himself. Like a son with his father, he has served with me in preaching the Good News. I hope to send him to you just as soon as I find out what is going to happen to me here. And I have confidence from the Lord that I myself will come to see you soon.
Philippians 2:
Context

Timothy Was Genuinely Concerned

Illustration: Got out of court with community service hours, asked Eric to write the letter for me
Philippians 2:20–21 LEB
For I have no one like-minded who will sincerely be concerned about your circumstances. For they all seek their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ.
Philippians 2:
“Everyone” is only concerned about themselves.
Don’t be anxious about it ()

Timothy Was Serving The Gospel

Philippians 2:22 NLT
But you know how Timothy has proved himself. Like a son with his father, he has served with me in preaching the Good News.
He’s Paul’s faithful son. One heart with Paul. Loyal only to the Gospel (not just following Paul around).

Serve the Gospel. Not just a cause. Not just a person.

Timothy Was Following Jesus’ Example

Illustration: I wanted to be like Brett. Then like Eric.
Question: Who’s the one person you’re following in the footsteps of?
Following Jesus led Timothy to service.
Philippians 2:1–4 NLT
Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from his love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and compassionate? Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose. Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.
Jesus was a servant.
Philippians 2:5–11 NLT
You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Jesus told us to serve others.
John 15:9–13 NLT
“I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow! This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
John
