A Desperate Man

His daughter is sick, at the point of death. Jairus falls at Jesus’ feet and begs for him to heal her.
On the way, Jesus is “delayed” by the woman.
Imagine Jairus’ worry and anxiety. He went from certain that Christ would heal, to wondering if He would get there in time.
Do you ever find yourself worrying over God’s timetable?

A Devastating Word

(ESV) While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler’s house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?”
35 While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler’s house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?”
Your daughter is dead! Too late!
35 While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler’s house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?”
The flood of questions that would come:
“If only...”
“Why did he have to stop? Why them and not me?”
“God has forgotten about me.”
(ESV) But Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me; my Lord has forgotten me.” 15 “Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. 16 Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me.
(ESV)
14 But Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me; my Lord has forgotten me.” 15 “Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. 16 Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me.
Now the discouragement, “Don’t bother the teacher...” (a lie from Satan, Christ is not bothered.)

The Deliverance of Christ

First, a Command from Christ.
Don’t be afraid. (The verb is passive), “Don’t let fear consume you.”
The fear that Jesus doesn’t care about my need, or is too busy.
Only Believe (Faith is an active verb). A choice to trust God in the face of death.
Jesus took only a few and cast out the scorners.
There are moments when your need can only be met by Christ and you need the company of those who also trust him.
Second, Christ’s compassion.
He brings just the parents and the disciples in the room.
He touches the girl, “takes her by the hand.”
Third, Christ’s power.
He raises her back to life. just a word.
The house is filled with joy , “they were amazed with great amazement” Imagine the parent’s joy at seeing their daughter raised back to life.
(ESV) Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Christ delivers from distress and brings peace. (faith in the storm).
Christ delivers from the devils power bring soundness of mind.
Christ delivers from disease and restores health.
Christ delivers from the fear of death and brings life and joy.
Ravi Zacharias’ letter to Nabeel Qureshi:
My dearest Nabeel, I love you, dear friend, and my heart aches to see you leaving this world so soon. But if it is of any comfort, you have so far lived the same number of years as our Lord and Redeemer. What is more, the world is a mess. We are still trapped by the fears of living in a world immersed in hate and living for matter, greed, pride, and violence. You will be freed to the joy of life where there are no more fears, no more tears, no more hate, no more bloodshed, because you will be with the One who has already shed his blood for you, where love is supreme, grace abounds, and the consummate joy is of the soul. The smile of God awaits you: “Well done.”
“Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, neither has entered into the heart of man, the things that God has prepared for them that love him,” promises.
Your eyes will now see and your hands will now touch that which is the only Real estate.
My heart goes to a hymn I heard at my grandmother’s funeral; I was only nine years old then.
Abide with me: fast falls the eventide;the darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide. When other helpers fail and comforts flee,Help of the helpless, O abide with me. Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day;Earth’s joys grow dim, its glories pass away.Change and decay in all around I see.O Lord who changes not, abide with me. I need your presence every passing hour. What but your grace can foil the tempter’s power?Who like yourself my guide and strength can be?Through cloud and sunshine, O abide with me. I fear no foe with you at hand to bless, though ills have weight, and tears their bitterness.Where is death’s sting? Where, grave, your victory?I triumph still, if you abide with me. Hold now your Word before my closing eyes.Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.Heaven’s morning breaks and earth’s vain shadows flee;in life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.
Farewell my dear Nabeel. If we don’t see you in the near future, we will see you in the eternal pasture.
