Commitment to the church

(NIV)

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

(NIV)

3Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

4There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called;

There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called;

; ;

Paul uses the picture of the body to describe the interdependence of believers:

(NIV)

For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function,

so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.

We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith;

if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach;

if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.

Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.

;

Commitment to other Christians is an expression of love made known in Christ

(NIV)

34“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

(NIV)

Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

(NIV)

Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart.

Such commitment is expressed in mutual responsibility and concern

(NIV)

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

(NIV)

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds,

not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

For its leaders, commitment to the church may prove a joy and a burden

(NIV)

Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.

(NIV)

Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches.

After the past two weeks, seeing what the Grzegorek family has gone through, God put this sermon on my heart. I know what I have been apart of, the things I needed to do as their Pastor. I cannot imagine the decisions, heartache, choices, discussions that needed to take place. We need to be the church for those that are hurting. We need to be offering to help, to cook, to have lunches, to .......to.......to........
Amen
