Pastoral prayer
Introduction: Confession and worship
Opening story:
Prussian king Frederick the Great was once touring a Berlin prison.
The prisoners fell on their knees before him to proclaim their innocence -- except for one man, who remained silent.
Frederick called to him, "Why are you here?"
"Armed robbery, Your Majesty," was the reply.
"And are you guilty?" "Yes indeed, Your Majesty, I deserve my punishment."
Frederick then summoned the jailer and ordered him, "Release this guilty wretch at once.
I will not have him kept in this prison where he will corrupt all the fine innocent people who occupy it."
Confession is good for the soul.
I think sometimes we have too narrow a view of what confession is.
The heading in my Bible: “The people of Israel confess their sin” in the NIV, the NLT, the King James, and the NET the same story.
But when you dig in, the reality is so much bigger.
Synonyms for confession include: admission, acknowledgement, profession, disclosure.
While confession can be about guilt, it is primarily about truth.
In we see 4 significant confessions which if we will embrace, have the capacity to deepen our relationship with God and prepare us for a life of obedience to God.
Pray
Confession #1: You are the Lord
We confess the greatness and holiness of God as absolute.
Nehemiah 9:4-
deuteronomy 6:
Isaiah 43:8-
Confession #2: You have loved us even when we were enemies
We confess that God has loved his people with an unconditional love.
We have not earned it, rather he has chosen to give it.
Not a love that saves everyone
Not a love that justifies sinners, rather we are justified by faith.
Confession #3: We have rejected your love (repeatedly)
We confess that we have and do reject the love of God every time we choose our sin, our desires, our separation rather than surrender to the one who knows what we need most and is what we need most.
Nehemiah 9:
Confession #4: You are just in your actions, and kind in your mercy
We confess that God has every right and is perfectly just in all his actions.
We are utterly derserving of the pit of hell because of our rejection of him as our God.
We confess that God’s mercy is completely undeserved, and apart from the gift given in Christ’s blood, we are without hope in this world.
Nehemiah 9:32-
Conclusion: Confession leading to repentance
Because of those 4 confessions we are led to the foot of the cross with nothing to do but repent.
We will look to God’s revealed word (the Bible) for our truth, our direction, and our rule of life.
As an example:
9:38
Nehemiah 10:28-
