Teach us to Pray: Lead Us

Matthew 6:9–15 ESV
Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Lead us

to cause someone to enter into a particular event or state

Does God Lead us into temptation?

James 1:13–18 ESV
Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
And Paul says in Corinthians
1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV
No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
God is Faithful to not let us be tempted beyond what we can endure
James- He is lured and enticed by his own desire
Lured and enticed is to be lead away

to lead astray, to lure into sin

Proverbs 11:22 ESV
Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is a beautiful woman without discretion.
The Gold ring was used to lead to the slaughter
so is temptation for us
it is the ring in the nose that leads us eventually to death
God does not lead us into temptation
Matthew 26:41 ESV
Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Temptations begin with us
our thoughts
our Desires
A temptation-
Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament based on Semantic Domains 88.308 πειράζω; ἐκπειράζω; πειρασμός, οῦ

to endeavor or attempt to cause someone to sin—‘to tempt, to trap

Mark 1:13 ESV
And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.
satan Tried to make Him sin
God is the one who is faithful to us

trustworthy, dependable, reliable

Solomon says
Proverbs 3:5–6 ESV
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
We know that temptation begins with us
we are fallen
we are enticed by Satan
we think things we should
we are tempted by our own minds to go down roads we shouldn’t
escorted by the devil down roads of Death
The Bible Knowledge Commentary 6:5–15 (Luke 11:2–4)

Believers recognize their spiritual weakness as they pray for deliverance from temptation to evil

2 Corinthians 10:3–6 ESV
For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete.
WE live in this world
we face temptation
But God has given us weapons of divine power

The weapons of the world are learning, personal influence, impressive credentials (1 Cor. 1:26), rhetorical polish (1 Cor. 2:1), and the like. These things Paul had discounted and discarded (Phil. 3:4–8). He did not wage war as the world does or use their weapons.

Paul would have ever reason to say this based on the life that he lived
he was born of the right family
he had the right schooling
he had power and authority
he was set for life with his career
Philippians 3:4–8 ESV
though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ
our weapons are different then the world’s
Think of the cross-
in this humble act of humiliation, being beaten, mocked, spit on, God being subject to Man, whipped, rejected, betrayed-
that isn’t victory
Colossians 2:14–15 ESV
by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.
The weapons of our warfare are not like the worlds
they aren’t
self-help books
material things
status
wealth
the things that we are told we need

The weapons Paul used were the proclaimed Word of God and prayer (Eph. 6:17–18), weapons with divine power. In dependence on God (1 Cor. 2:4–5) these weapons, frail by worldly standards, are able to demolish the arguments and every pretension of the gospel’s foes. Neither the god of this Age (2 Cor. 4:4) nor his henchmen (11:15) could oppose the knowledge (or power) of God on which Paul relied.

God has given us His word, which guides, directs, and lights the path for our feet
in our darkest times we can turn to God
Stronghold-

a strong military fortification—‘stronghold, fortress.

We tear down those things that once had control
we can know the truth and be set free from the bondage of
depression
low-self esteem
anxiety
our identity
all of these temptations lead us astray from what God has declared
We can tear them down in our life
we aren’t helpless
We take those thoughts captive
they bow to what God’s word declares in our lives
Ephesians 6:10–17 ESV
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,
Be strong in the Lord- Believers can be strengthened not only by the presence and person of God but also by His resources- His word
Philippians 4:13 ESV
I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
Put on, take up- the whole armor which re all merely synonyms for the gospel
We don’t automatically come each day protected by the gospel- we need to take it up and put it on-
we are tempted by our sinful nature by our flesh-
We take up the armor -
We Preach the Gospel to ourselves
we say because of Christ I am a new Creation
I have a hope and a future
God isn’t done making me into is image
I am set free from sin
any thought that doesn’t line up with God’s word is a lie!
Truth-

that which is true and thus in accordance with what actually happened

it is What has God done and declared
You will know the truth and the truth will set you free
Righteousness-

the act of doing what God requires—‘righteousness, doing what God requires, doing what is right

We re no longer slaves to sin- we were brought with a price and God has redeemed us
2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Our actions are made right
our thoughts can be made right
and our speech can be made right
ready with the gospel of peace-
2 Corinthians 5:18–21 ESV
All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
not only does the gospel take us who are broken and reconcile us it also empowers us to set others free
WE walk as children of the light bring light to the darkness
1 Thessalonians 5:5 ESV
For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness.
Faith-

to believe in the good news about Jesus Christ and to become a follower

WE build our lives on the gospel
Matthew 7:24–27 ESV
“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”
we actively build our lives on the gospel
it is our foundation
Hebrews 11:1 ESV
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Assurance-

that which provides the basis for trust and reliance—‘trust, confidence, assurance.

Hoped-

to look forward with confidence to that which is good and beneficial

Salvation-

the message about God saving people

It is our victory!
WE raise our helmets as a sign of Victory
Word of God- we battle thoughts, and strongholds in our lives
Matthew 6:13 ESV
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
2 Thessalonians 3:3 ESV
But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.
David writes
Psalm 46:1 ESV
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
