Psalm 37:1–10

Psalm 37:1–10 NLT
Don’t worry about the wicked or envy those who do wrong. For like grass, they soon fade away. Like spring flowers, they soon wither. Trust in the Lord and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper. Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires. Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him, and he will help you. He will make your innocence radiate like the dawn, and the justice of your cause will shine like the noonday sun. Be still in the presence of the Lord, and wait patiently for him to act. Don’t worry about evil people who prosper or fret about their wicked schemes. Stop being angry! Turn from your rage! Do not lose your temper— it only leads to harm. For the wicked will be destroyed, but those who trust in the Lord will possess the land. Soon the wicked will disappear. Though you look for them, they will be gone.
Believers are privileged to receive a spiritual inheritance from their heavenly Father as a result of their adoption into the family of God through faith.
Believers have an inheritance in Christ
Jesus Christ as God’s heir
Hebrews 1:2 NLT
And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe.
Matthew 28:18 NLT
Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth.
John 3:35 NLT
The Father loves his Son and has put everything into his hands.
Hebrews 1:4–6 NLT
This shows that the Son is far greater than the angels, just as the name God gave him is greater than their names. For God never said to any angel what he said to Jesus: “You are my Son. Today I have become your Father.” God also said, “I will be his Father, and he will be my Son.” And when he brought his supreme Son into the world, God said, “Let all of God’s angels worship him.”
Psalm 2:7–8 NLT
The king proclaims the Lord’s decree: “The Lord said to me, ‘You are my son. Today I have become your Father. Only ask, and I will give you the nations as your inheritance, the whole earth as your possession.
Believers are co-heirs with Christ
Romans 8:17 NLT
And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering.
Ephesians 3:6 NLT
And this is God’s plan: Both Gentiles and Jews who believe the Good News share equally in the riches inherited by God’s children. Both are part of the same body, and both enjoy the promise of blessings because they belong to Christ Jesus.
Believers are heirs under the covenant
Hebrews 6:17 NLT
God also bound himself with an oath, so that those who received the promise could be perfectly sure that he would never change his mind.
Hebrews 9:15 NLT
That is why he is the one who mediates a new covenant between God and people, so that all who are called can receive the eternal inheritance God has promised them. For Christ died to set them free from the penalty of the sins they had committed under that first covenant.
Believers are heirs by grace
Galatians 3:18 NLT
For if the inheritance could be received by keeping the law, then it would not be the result of accepting God’s promise. But God graciously gave it to Abraham as a promise.
Acts 20:32 NLT
“And now I entrust you to God and the message of his grace that is able to build you up and give you an inheritance with all those he has set apart for himself.
Colossians 1:12 NLT
always thanking the Father. He has enabled you to share in the inheritance that belongs to his people, who live in the light.
Believers are heirs through faith
Galatians 3:29 NLT
And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham. You are his heirs, and God’s promise to Abraham belongs to you.
Romans 4:13–17 NLT
Clearly, God’s promise to give the whole earth to Abraham and his descendants was based not on his obedience to God’s law, but on a right relationship with God that comes by faith. If God’s promise is only for those who obey the law, then faith is not necessary and the promise is pointless. For the law always brings punishment on those who try to obey it. (The only way to avoid breaking the law is to have no law to break!) So the promise is received by faith. It is given as a free gift. And we are all certain to receive it, whether or not we live according to the law of Moses, if we have faith like Abraham’s. For Abraham is the father of all who believe. That is what the Scriptures mean when God told him, “I have made you the father of many nations.” This happened because Abraham believed in the God who brings the dead back to life and who creates new things out of nothing.
Hebrews 11:7–10 NLT
It was by faith that Noah built a large boat to save his family from the flood. He obeyed God, who warned him about things that had never happened before. By his faith Noah condemned the rest of the world, and he received the righteousness that comes by faith. It was by faith that Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave home and go to another land that God would give him as his inheritance. He went without knowing where he was going. And even when he reached the land God promised him, he lived there by faith—for he was like a foreigner, living in tents. And so did Isaac and Jacob, who inherited the same promise. Abraham was confidently looking forward to a city with eternal foundations, a city designed and built by God.
The nature of the spiritual inheritance of believers
They inherit salvation
Hebrews 1:14 NLT
Therefore, angels are only servants—spirits sent to care for people who will inherit salvation.
They inherit eternal life
Matthew 19:29 NLT
And everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or property, for my sake, will receive a hundred times as much in return and will inherit eternal life.
Titus 3:7 NLT
Because of his grace he made us right in his sight and gave us confidence that we will inherit eternal life.
1 Peter 3:7 NLT
In the same way, you husbands must give honor to your wives. Treat your wife with understanding as you live together. She may be weaker than you are, but she is your equal partner in God’s gift of new life. Treat her as you should so your prayers will not be hindered.
They have the full rights of sons
Galatians 4:4–7 NLT
But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law. God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children. And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.” Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir.
They inherit the earth
Matthew 5:5 NLT
God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth.
Psalm 37:11 NLT
The lowly will possess the land and will live in peace and prosperity.
They inherit the kingdom
Revelation 3:21 NLT
Those who are victorious will sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat with my Father on his throne.
Their inheritance is the word of God
Psalm 119:111 NLT
Your laws are my treasure; they are my heart’s delight.
They inherit the Lord himself
Psalm 73:26 NLT
My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever.
In Conclusion:
The permanence of believers’ spiritual inheritance
It has been prepared from the creation
Matthew 25:34 NLT
“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world.
It is guaranteed for eternity
Psalm 37:18 NLT
Day by day the Lord takes care of the innocent, and they will receive an inheritance that lasts forever.
It is sealed with God’s promise
Ephesians 1:13–14 NLT
And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago. The Spirit is God’s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. He did this so we would praise and glorify him.
Revelation 7:3 NLT
“Wait! Don’t harm the land or the sea or the trees until we have placed the seal of God on the foreheads of his servants.”
It is denied to the ungodly
Ephesians 5:5 NLT
You can be sure that no immoral, impure, or greedy person will inherit the Kingdom of Christ and of God. For a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.
