commitment.

What do we understand by this word.
some will remember that day when you made a commitment with their Husband or wife at the altar.
some will have never entered into a relationship with anyone to be committed.
For some this might mean confinement in an institute.
these are the dictionary rendition of commitment.
Commitment may refer to:
Promise, or personal commitment
Contract, a legally binding exchange of promises
Brand commitment Involuntary commitment, the use of legal means or forms to commit a person to a mental hospital, insane asylum, or psychiatric ward
This morning i would like us to look at the word commitment with reference to being committed to God and each other.
Today is rededication week in the baptist church family. it a time when people who have being asked to stand in a position acknowledge before the church that they are willing to stand in that position for another year.
But before we come to this part of the service i want us to look at the God head and their commitment in the world today.
As we look through the bible we see a triune God who is committed to our world and the inhabitance. Father, Son and Holy Spirit
The triune Godhead togeather created the heavens and the earth and all that is upon it
Genesis 1:1–5 AV
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
The Godhead created this worderful place we call earth and when he had done so
Genesis 1:31 AV
And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
Here we see a God that had created all this for our pleasure.
But how did we repay God for all his wonderful creation.
Genesis 3:1–8 AV
Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.
Falling into sin was the way that we repayed God for what he had done.
But God didnt finish with man
God spoke back in the garden how he would deal with sin and the one who lead his people into sin.
Genesis 3:14–15 AV
And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
In the fulness of time God allowed his faviour to elite on many but we find that God showed his commitment to the human Race by making a covernant with Abram.
Genesis 12:1–3 AV
Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
Here we see that God was going to give a blessing to Abram if he was going to leave the place of his birth and his family and follow him.
Although we see that he came out from the ur of chaldees we see he came out with his family.
Abram entered into a covernant with God in Gen 15
It wasn't until he had left lot, and Ishmael had gone that he came into the realisation of the fulfilment of Gods Promise.
God gave Abram a new name to reminded him of the covenant.
Abram means exalted father but God changed his name to Abraham which means father of nations.
God was showing that he was committed to a man and subsequently to a nation.
how ever as we read through the old testament we find that his chosen people didn't want to follow his ways.
God had shown on numerous occasions that he Loved his chosen people but they were stiff necked.
There was something that stopped the people realy getting close to God and that was sin.
Up to now sin could only be covered over by the sacrifice system but in the fulness of time there would come one who would die for the whole world and sin would no longer just be covered but would be washed clean away.
Entrance to the stage the son of God, Jesus
Born of a virgin
born without sin
born to save the whole world.
In the old testament in the book of Gen. we see Jesus as the spoken word of God so when we come to the book of john
John 1:1–4 AV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
Here we see that Jesus was in the beginning with God
John 1:14 AV
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Here we see that the word Jesus came into the world showing a commitment to the world ,you and me
But why would the creative word of God come to a world when he could just as easily stayed in heaven and look at his handy work.
God wanted communion with man and because of sin this would not happen.
Galatians 4:4–5 AV
But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.
There was a right time for Jesus to come and just over 2000 years ago Jesus came,
but for what perpose
Romans 3:25 AV
Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
1 John 2:2 AV
And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
propitiation what does this word mean

propitiation | prəˌpɪʃɪˈeɪʃ(ə)n |

noun [mass noun] the action of propitiating or appeasing a god, spirit, or person: he lifted his hands in propitiation.

atonement, especially that of Jesus Christ.

So Jesus was to become our atonement or our sacrifice.
John 3:16 AV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
we know only to well this scripture and here we see that God was committed to this world as so was Jesus to come.

For God so loved the world

Here we see an emotion and emotions are good but if thats all there is then why have that emotion.
God had emotion but he demonstrated his love for this world with an action.

That he Gave

God didn't stay in Heaven and look upon the world with all its problems and say there there
No Gods emotion drove him to give , and not just a bandaid or a rub of ointment
He Gave his only begotten son
begotten | bɪˈɡɒt(ə)n | past participle of beget.beget | bɪˈɡɛt | verb (begets, begetting; past begot | bɪˈɡɒt | or archaic begat; past participle begotten | bɪˈɡɒt(ə)n | ) [with object] literary1 (especially of a man) bring (a child) into existence by the process of reproduction: they hoped that the King might beget an heir by his new queen.
but this verse isn't finished yet we see that God gave a promise with a clause.

that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

what a promise and this promise still stands today.
Ok you say so Jesus came so what we still don’t have a close relationship with God
Some people had a relationship with the son of God in many ways.
Healing
Raising from the dead
and knowing Jesus as a friend.
What about the commitment of Jesus to us.
He came with one aim in mind to be our propitiation our atonement so this means that he would have to die
Jesus died in the fulness of time after a really short time in ministry just 3.5 years but he had shown to the world that God loved them and so did he.
In the Garden Jesus was just about to complete his mission if you will
when he utter these words
Matthew 26:39 AV
And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.
HE was human but also divine he new his task but his humanity was revealing to us just how he felt at this time
History records that Jesus died and that he rose again completing the work of redemption
so we see that God and Jesus was committed to us but what about the Holy spirit.
The Holy spirit the third person of the trinity how does he reveal that he is committed to us .
When Jesus left this world he said he would said another comforter
someone to stand with us and help us
John 14:26 AV
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
This is for many people the hardest to believe or accept
why?
simply because we cannot see him.
Just because we cant see him doesn't mean he doesn't exist.
we know the wind exists but we cant see that.
We know the wind exists because we see the things that it does.
It blows our wheeler bins over blows next doors leaves into our garden and so on
In the same way that we can see the effect of the wind we can see the effect of the Holy Spirit.
It the Holy Spirit that takes that sinner and manes them a saint
It the Holy spirit that transforms our old sinful life into that life that brings glory to his name
It is the Holy Spirit that makes the difference and brings the difference to our lives
Remember the timid disciples that went into that upper room because they were frightened that the romans would do the same to them that they had done to Jesus.
Yes they were waiting waiting for the promise of Father sent from the son but what was it and how would they know when they had got it.
God made sure they new and all Jerusalem that the Holy Spirit had come.
Acts 2:1–4 AV
And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
The Holy spirit had come in all his power and authority and everybody new.
How i wish i lived in a time like that
Can you just imagine that we were all in a prayer meeting in the Church waiting for something that we didn't know and when it was to come we didn't know either.
My grandmother would always get to the meeting why because she didnt want to miss any thing.
An then a sound of a rushing wing came sweeping down alexander road if it were a normally wind people would be bolting their doors to keep it out
But their is something different about this wind and it sweeps through the doors banging them as they come in then all of a sudden we see tongs of fire upon the heads of all in the congregation
Tell me how would you feel.
Peter went outside and spoke to the crowd that had formed and souls were saved.
The holy spirit sowed his commitment to to the early church but he is still around changing the lives of people today.
God is committed
Jesus is committed
The Holy spirit is committed
But what about you.
You might be committed to your Husband or wife
You might be committed to your children
Your work or your hobby
But what about God and his service and the body of christ.
I’ll come to church if i’ve nothing better to do
or as long as nobody come to the house before i come out.
Hebrews 10:25 AV
Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
Today is rededication Sunday and i am going to ask people who have positions in the church if they will commit themselves to function in there dedicated areas.
then i’m going to ask The rest of the people who are in the church to stand if they will commit themselves to the service and work of our church.
Last week i mentioned in the meeting that this would happen But this is the first week of our affirmation of our wanting to commit to the work of this church
Philippians 2:2–5 AV
Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
God was committed to Abraham and the children of Israel
Jesus was committed to come and die for the whole world
The holy spirit is committed to being our comforter and transformer.
This morning are we committed to follow The Holy spirit wherever he leads us.
