Verses 1-4

What’s a Hellenist? A Greek speaking Jew.
Instead of a Hebrew…Aramaic speaking Jew.
Widows being neglected due to “disciples increasing in number.”
This is a big deal. Here’s why:
Exodus 22:22 ESV
22 You shall not mistreat any widow or fatherless child.
Deuteronomy 10:18 ESV
18 He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing.
Deuteronomy 24:17 ESV
17 “You shall not pervert the justice due to the sojourner or to the fatherless, or take a widow’s garment in pledge,
Deuteronomy 24:19–21 ESV
19 “When you reap your harvest in your field and forget a sheaf in the field, you shall not go back to get it. It shall be for the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow, that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands. 20 When you beat your olive trees, you shall not go over them again. It shall be for the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow. 21 When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, you shall not strip it afterward. It shall be for the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow.
Deuteronomy 24:
Taking care of the widows is part of obedience.
A very necessary principle to understand here.
Acts 6:2–3 ESV
2 And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. 3 Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty.
Acts 6:2
Here’s the principle....
The scriptures have to be first in our priorities. AND...
You must be obedient to what it says.
However,
Steven and 6 others are designated for this leadership and what does the Bible say about what kind of men they were?
good repute
full of the Spirit
and of wisdom

The Ministry and Martyrdom of Stephen

Read
AND
Why do you think they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit witch which Stephen was speaking?

Their accusation: Verse 11.

UCF story within college football. It’s weird and it makes people angry that they are proclaiming another champion!
We all agree that’s “not the way it’s supposed to be.”

Face like an angel..? Huh?

Acts 6:15 ESV
15 And gazing at him, all who sat in the council saw that his face was like the face of an angel.
Look up...
Exodus 34:29–30 ESV
29 When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. 30 Aaron and all the people of Israel saw Moses, and behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him.
And..
Matthew 17:2 ESV
2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light.

What is so “significant” about Stephen’s death?

Read … WOW.

What can we learn from Stephen’s death?

He saw Jesus at his death.
He was not angry. WOW.
He fell asleep?
Where else does the Bible talk about falling asleep?
Daniel 12:2 ESV
2 And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.
Matthew 9:24 ESV
24 he said, “Go away, for the girl is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him.
Mark 5:39 ESV
39 And when he had entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.”
Luke 8:52–53 ESV
52 And all were weeping and mourning for her, but he said, “Do not weep, for she is not dead but sleeping.” 53 And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead.

Conclusion and Warning/Encouragement

1 Corinthians 15:51–52 ESV
51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.
1 Corinthians 15:51
