002 Parable of two son

I. v. 11 Shameful request
A. Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me.
To the Pharasees this must of been an outrageous request
Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me.
This just blatin demand of disrespect. a
outrageous
It was disobedence to the fifth commandment
In order for the son to receive his inheredence the father must have die.
So in the Jewish eyes this demand and disrespect must be responded to with a harsh responce often a slap in the face.
B. Is it a picture of how man has treated his heavenly Father.
I don’t need you in my life
C. v. 12 he divided unto them his living.
Where was this older son during this time of his brothers rebellion?
he divided unto them his living.
Should he of not rebuke his brother also, stood up in defense of his father?
We will see that the older son was just as must in rebellion agianst his father as the younger son.
II. vv. 13-16 The shameful rebellion
A. Took was was given to him and left
It was an estate property, he had to of sold what ever his father gave him
B. Went to a far country
In doing so he was in total rebellion towards his father
Jewish culture when a child leaves his home family and faith they would consider that child dead.
this is indicated v. 24, 32 my son was dead, but now is alive
C. But all did not go according to his plan
First of all he wasted his money on riotous living
just threw it away, spent his money on things that were not of any value.
D. When he spent all a great famine came

So we boiled my son, and did eat him: and I said unto her on the next day, Give thy son, that we may eat him: and she hath hid her son.

He was in bad situation because he had no money and he had no money because he wasted it. The money his father gave him.
Good stewards of what God has given us
He was in a bad situation because no one would help him
where were his friends now?
Young this world is not your friend.
Sin may look good, but in the end it will chew you up and spit you out and leave empty handed.
D. He was desperate that in v. 15 he joined himself (attached himself) cleened to this citizen. Basically begging for money.
1. Sent him to feed the pigs/this must of been discussing in the ears of the Jewish audience.
E. Ended eating the husks that the pigs eat
III. A shameful repentence
A. When he came to himself,
When he hit bottom, he then began think about the only one who could and would help him
B. v. 17 How may hired servants does my father have
A hired servant worked one day at a time
There was a law in order to hire a servant you must pay them a miminum wage
the man thought “have bread enough and to spare”

MY Father is a very genereous, kind and loving man, who takes care of his people.
C. He would go and try and work his way back into the favor of his father.
This is what the Jews were thinking, yes he needs to work his way back into the grace of his Father
IV. v. 20 The shameful welcome of his Father
A. Before he arrived back into his village his father saw him a far off and had compassion on him
Jesus listers would be why he doesn’t deserve it
B. He ran. Noblemen don’t run, do so must show their legs
It would bring them shame and disgrace upon them to do so.
ii. shocked at what Jesus was saying.
C. He fell on his neck and kiss and embraced him
His son who was dirty and smelly from working with the pigs was welcomed home with the embrace of a loving Father.
ii. This gesture of acceptance, love, forgiveness, and reconciliation would have further shocked the scribes and Pharisees
iii. But it is a perfect picture of God’s love for His lost creation

iv. Here in this father the Lord Jesus Christ presents Himself, the one who left the glory of heaven, came to earth and bore the shame and humility to embrace repentant sinners, who come to Him in faith, and give them complete forgiveness and reconciliation.
D. v. 21 His son says what he rehersed but leaves out make me one of hired servants.

Why because there was no need now to work his way back into the favour of his father.
E. v. 22-24 His father says to his servants
bring out best robe
put a ring on his finger and shoes on his feet signifying he is part of my family.
fatted calf let us rejoice for my son who was dead is now alive
V. SHamful responce of his brother
A. He could not rejoice because he had no love for his father
This is what the point of Jesus was to the Pharasees and Scribes
God entrusted the Jews with His Word.
B. Father pleaded with his son to come in
He was saying you are just as lost as the sinful man
C. Ends there, giving letting the hearers to think and come to their own decsion what they will, or what the son did.
We know, because he represented the Scribes, the Pharasees who in the end rejected the Lord Jesus.
Application:
Don’t become pious, or believe that you are better
