Godly leadership is required in order to lead people in the way of the Lord. Toby closes out the sermon with a quote from Charles Spurgeon-a Gospel plea for the lost to come to Christ before it is too late.

1 Then it was, when the wall was built and I had hung the doors, when the gatekeepers, the singers, and the Levites had been appointed, 2 that I gave the charge of Jerusalem to my brother Hanani, and Hananiah the leader of the citadel, for he was a faithful man and feared God more than many.
3 And I said to them, “Do not let the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot; and while they stand guard, let them shut and bar the doors; and appoint guards from among the inhabitants of Jerusalem, one at his watch station and another in front of his own house.”
4 Now the city was large and spacious, but the people in it were few, and the houses were not rebuilt.

The city was under opposition from all around. There was a constant threat of attack.

Hanani was given charge of Jerusalem as the leader of the citadel. He would know when to make improvements to the wall and it’s defenses and when to retreat into the fortress to defend the city.

The gates were normally opened at dawn and closed at dusk.
Nehemiah changed this up.
It is possible that wanted to take away any opportunity for the enemy to utilize the early morning hours for a surprise attack.
Ensuring that the doors stayed closed until the sun was at its peak, also ensured that the people were about, enjoying the routine of the morning without worry of attack.

The inhabitants probably weren’t used to taking guard duty shifts.
Maybe they didn’t think it was necessary to go both to their watch station AND to guard their homes.
But the leaders understood the kind of pressure they were under from those on the outside AND from those on the inside.
