Why Study Colossians?
Why Study Colossians?
Who wrote Colossians? Paul wrote the book of Colossians. You see in verse 1 Paul an apostle of Christ Jesus. Also in the letter you see that he is a minister of the gospel. As a minister of the gospel Colossians says that he, is proclaiming the word to make God fully known. We see that he has penned this letter from prison. This was most likely written between AD-52-62
Where was colossae? Colossae is located in modern day turkey and is about 110 miles east of Ephesus.
Today, I want have a quick overview of the book, and see the main points that we are going to break down in the future. Colossians is a book that is rich in both theology and life application. The Christian life needs both if he is going to rightly live out his or her own faith.
What is some theology and life application we will learn from our study of Colossians?
Why did Paul write this letter?
we learn how to live worthy of the Lord. 9-14
We will learn about Christ. someone read . This is most famous passage from the book. What does this tell us about Christ? Christ is divine, he is himself God. It shows his cosmic powers. It shows us he is the head of the church.
How important is it that we understand the character of Christ?
Does our salvation depend on it?
The book shows us the gospel. Someone read 1:24-2:5 what do we see in this text that explains the gospel, and helps us with false teaching? v2-3 Christ is the mystery and all the hidden treasures such as wisdom and knowledge are found in him.
It shows us the error of the church at Colossae. 2:6-23 Many people believe this is why Paul wrote this letter? Most scholars believe this book was written to counter false teaching. However this is not clear. However in chapter 2 of this book we see warnings about not being deceived, and talks of empty deceit, and truths that are contrary to the teachings of Christ. What else where they teaching? in Chapter 2 verse 18 it says, Let noone disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about visions, puffed up without reason by sensuous mind. Many believe the Colossian heresy was basically Jewish, it is not the straightforward Judaizing legalism of Galatians that is envisaged in Colossians, but a form of mysticism which tempted its adepts to look on themselves as a spiritual elite. The people of Colossae could have been influenced by others injecting truth that did not pertain to the true gospel. So Paul lays out truth throughout his letter to eliminate the ideas, that Christ is not enough for salvation, or enough to be godly followers of Christ. Any teaching that questions the sufficiency of Christ not only for initial salvation but also for spiritual grown and ultimate salvation from judgment, fails to preach the truths of scripture.

Why is it important that we take on these new roles in our Christian walk?
We must learn as we study this book Christ is sufficient, and because he is it enables us to truth him, and follow him. We must learn our faith, so we do not incorporate any other truths that may add to or take away from his gospel. Knowing and living our faith is key to having a proper relationship with God and his church.

How does this letter help us as Christians today?
Most importantly it speaks to us about Christ.

The teaching of the letter to the Colossians is concerned with those aspects of the gospel which were chiefly threatened by the Colossian heresy—the uniqueness of the person of Christ, in whom the plenitude of deity was embodied; the perfection of the redeeming and reconciling work which he accomplished by his death on the cross, and the spiritual liberty enjoyed by all who by faith were united to him.

In addition to this great section of scripture, we see Jesus makes God fully known, that he is the mystery of God manifested. He sits at the right hand of the father. That believers are hidden in him and the list really goes on and on. We see in the book of Colossians that Jesus is divine, and he all those who believe in him can have life.
