Notes & Transcripts
Application: Have you ever thought about how it feels to forgive someone or have someone forgive you? Can you think for a moment about how free you felt?
In fact, never are we more like God than when we love our enemies and do good to those that harm us, for then we prove, Jesus said, to be children of God.
Mark 2:6–10 NKJV
6 And some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, 7 “Why does this Man speak blasphemies like this? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 8 But immediately, when Jesus perceived in His spirit that they reasoned thus within themselves, He said to them, “Why do you reason about these things in your hearts? 9 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise, take up your bed and walk’? 10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”—He said to the paralytic,

Note: We have looked at 2 key facts about Christ and His ministry
1. He can set you Free- leper
2. Faith produces Actions
When Jesus heals this man who was unable to walk, the religious leaders begin to question in their minds.
( think about what I said last week about asking Jesus in your heart vs what the Bible really teaches based on The Hebrew concept of the word Heart”intellect or mind)
They are reasoning in their mind:
*This man is a blasphemer
*This man is wrong bc only God can forgive sins
*Jesus ask them what is easier:
Your sins are forgiven or arise and walk
This was so important because forgiveness could only occur through the power of the almighty God
1. God Alone can forgive sins ( 6-8)
man is guilty and helpless and hopeless
Mark 2:6–8 NKJV
6 And some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, 7 “Why does this Man speak blasphemies like this? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 8 But immediately, when Jesus perceived in His spirit that they reasoned thus within themselves, He said to them, “Why do you reason about these things in your hearts?
The message of the church is that all people are sinners, all people are under the wrath of God, all people are headed for eternal judgment because of their sin and God as a righteous judge will bring about that eternal punishment.  But, God also is a God of mercy and grace who will forgive the sinner who comes to Him with a repentant heart and asks for that gift of forgiveness.
Exodus 34:6–7 NKJV
6 And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, 7 keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.”
All sin is against God.  All sin is a violation of God's law.  Since God is the offended one, God is the lawgiver, God is the judge and executioner, only God can forgive the sinner.
The religious leaders knew only God could forgive sins.
This was significant bc this began the issue with Jesus.
The law said:
Leviticus 24:16 NKJV
16 And whoever blasphemes the name of the Lord shall surely be put to death. All the congregation shall certainly stone him, the stranger as well as him who is born in the land. When he blasphemes the name of the Lord, he shall be put to death.
The New Testament tells us Jesus verdict.
Mark 14:61 NKJV
61 But He kept silent and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked Him, saying to Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?”
Note: Within reason they saw Jesus as crossing a huge line
Talmud- ( Jewish civil and ceremonial law) said this,” no man gets up from his sickbed until all his sins are forgiven”
*Remember Jobs friends — it has to be sin the reason you are facing hardship.
*It was totally within character to think sin was the issue and it had to be personal sin.
In fact even the disciples struggled with this issues
John 9:1–3 NKJV
1 Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. 2 And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him.
( who sinned to cause this problem- generational sin read earlier in Exodus)

2. Forgiveness is not Cheap.
Mark 2:9 NKJV
9 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise, take up your bed and walk’?
Arise and walk and your sins are forgiven.
*Healing—— you still die
*Forgiveness- you live forever
We lesson forgiveness and make it something casual and Paul writes about sinning:
Romans 6:1 NKJV
1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?
- keep on winning
When they saw a disease , they saw personal sin as the issue.
Jesus was telling them that this mans sins was forgiven
The real cry of his heart was not the physical need.  The real cry of his heart was for forgiveness.
What a gift
Going to the OT
Jeremiah 31:34 NKJV
34 No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”
Micah 7:19 NKJV
19 He will again have compassion on us, And will subdue our iniquities. You will cast all our sins Into the depths of the sea.
Psalm 103:12 NKJV
12 As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.
3. Forgiveness is paying the debt of the sin that so easily entangles Us.
Give you some truths about the forgiveness of Jesus.
Forgiveness is realizing Jesus puts people back together WHO ARE broken
Jesus shared the Gospel, the Gospel is essential to true healing It takes effort.... sometimes it’s not easy, because we have to come to a realization of who we are and sin is dirty.

( gift of a dog- 6 year old boy)
Jesus has the Power to Forgive sins bc He is God.
In that moment these religious leaders were face to face with God in the flesh and they did not know it.
John 1:1 NKJV
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:14 NKJV
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 3:16 NKJV
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
