The First Lord's Supper The First Lord's Supper John Long IV / General Mark / Mark 14:22–26 Mark 14:22–26 CSB 22 As they were eating, he took bread, blessed and broke it, gave it to them, and said, “Take it; this is my body.” 23 Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 He said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. 25 Truly I tell you, I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.” 26 After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. Covenant ~ Testament - Final Will and Testament, terms are dictated by one person New Covenant - Jesus Different Covenants - Mosaic, Abrahamic, Adamic Adam was under a covenant Hosea 6:7 CSB 7 But they, like Adam, have violated the covenant; there they have betrayed me. Covenant given by God stating how the relationship will work between God and humanity, which includes blessings for keeping the covenant and curses for breaking the covenant. Genesis 2:16–17 CSB 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree of the garden, 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for on the day you eat from it, you will certainly die.” Genesis 2:9 CSB 9 The Lord God caused to grow out of the ground every tree pleasing in appearance and good for food, including the tree of life in the middle of the garden, as well as the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The terms of the covenant are that obedience leads to life, disobedience leads to death. Romans 7:10 CSB 10 and I died. The commandment that was meant for life resulted in death for me. Mosaic covenant, if perfectly obeyed leads to eternal life, if disobeyed leads to eternal death. Romans 10:5 CSB 5 since Moses writes about the righteousness that is from the law: The one who does these things will live by them. Righteousness could be obtained through perfect obedience resulting in eternal life. Galatians 3:10–14 CSB 10 For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, because it is written, Everyone who does not do everything written in the book of the law is cursed. 11 Now it is clear that no one is justified before God by the law, because the righteous will live by faith. 12 But the law is not based on faith; instead, the one who does these things will live by them. 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, because it is written, Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree. 14 The purpose was that the blessing of Abraham would come to the Gentiles by Christ Jesus, so that we could receive the promised Spirit through faith. Failing even once leads to eternal death, which is what every person who has ever lived has done, except one. For those who lives a perfectly obedient life and never sins, and does “everything” in the law will live by “them.” But for anyone who has sinned and failed to perfectly obey God even once can only obtain life through “faith” that God will save them. Jesus perfectly obeyed the law under the first covenant and therefore obtained the right to life. 1 Peter 2:22 CSB 22 He did not commit sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth; Romans 5:18–19 CSB 18 So then, as through one trespass there is condemnation for everyone, so also through one righteous act there is justification leading to life for everyone. 19 For just as through one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so also through the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous. Through Jesus’ perfect obedience He can grant us life. Romans 4:1–5 CSB 1 What then will we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found? 2 If Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about—but not before God. 3 For what does the Scripture say? Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him for righteousness. 4 Now to the one who works, pay is not credited as a gift, but as something owed. 5 But to the one who does not work, but believes on him who declares the ungodly to be righteous, his faith is credited for righteousness. Everyone in the Old Testament were saved not through obtaining life through perfect obedience, for all have sinned since Adam, but through their “faith” in God that He would save them through a future descendant of Adam. We see this all the way back when Adam and Eve sinned and God promised that one would come and would crush the serpent’s head. Romans 5:1 CSB 1 Therefore, since we have been declared righteous by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. We too, living under the “New Covenant” are also saved, not by perfect obedience, but through “faith.” Hebrews 8:6 CSB 6 But Jesus has now obtained a superior ministry, and to that degree he is the mediator of a better covenant, which has been established on better promises. Jesus is now our mediator between us and God under the new covenant. Hebrews 9:15 CSB 15 Therefore, he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called might receive the promise of the eternal inheritance, because a death has taken place for redemption from the transgressions committed under the first covenant. It was through His death, that He took on our punishment that He did not deserve since He never sinned and therefore can use His death and a satisfying payment for our sins before God. From the very beginning God has demanded obedience from those in covenant relationship with Him and that has not changed under the new covenant. Perfect obedience was never accomplished by anyone in the Old Testament and none were saved through obedience, they were only saved through faith, but obedience was still demanded by God. Under the New Testament, perfect obedience will never save anyone because no one will ever live a perfect life other than Jesus Christ, and therefore under the New Testament obedience (works) will never save anyone, only our faith in Jesus can save us. We believe that God will declare us who are unrighteous to be righteous. He will save us if we will place our faith in Jesus Christ alone. But God warns us that faith apart from obedience is not real faith and will not save us. God tells us this through James, John, and Paul. James 2:17 CSB 17 In the same way faith, if it doesn’t have works, is dead by itself. Paul told us that Abraham was saved by his faith, and James tells us the same thing, but James clarifies that Abraham’s faith drove him to “obey” God by taking Isaac up on the mountain to sacrifice him. 1 John 2:4–6 CSB 4 The one who says, “I have come to know him,” and yet doesn’t keep his commands, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps his word, truly in him the love of God is made complete. This is how we know we are in him: 6 The one who says he remains in him should walk just as he walked. The apostle John, who wrote the gospel of John, and who never used the word repent in connection with salvation also wrote 1st, 2nd, and 3rd John. In 1 John, John tells us that if you say you are in a relationship with God but do not obey His commands then you are lying. John says that if you are actually saved then you must “keep his commands,” “keep his word,” and “walk just as he walked.” 1 Corinthians 15:1–2 CSB 1 Now I want to make clear for you, brothers and sisters, the gospel I preached to you, which you received, on which you have taken your stand 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold to the message I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. God said through the apostle Paul that you are saved by the gospel that he preached to you. He did not say you are saved by keeping the law that he gave to you. He said you are saved by taking a stand on the good news of Jesus that was spoken to you “if” you hold to the message “unless” you believed in vain. So we see here that you are saved, not by works, not by obedience, but only by faith in the gospel. But God goes to great lengths to show that it is possible to believe in vain. Vain means without purpose, meaningless. So to believe in vain means to believe for no purpose. It would be the situation of someone who hears the gospel and believes it to be true but never decides to actually give their life to Christ. Someone who would say, “Yeah I believe that Jesus was the son of God, and I believe He died for my sins on the Cross, and I want to go to heaven when I die, but I’m not actually going to live my life here on earth for God. I’m not going to actually change anything about how I live. I’m not going to actually pursue God, I’m going to live for me. I’m not going to be concerned with what God wants, I’m going to just be concerned with what I want. I’m going to figure out how to get what I want.” That is to believe in vain. James says the demons believe, but they are not saved. Paul says here in verse two that you too can believe for no purpose and ultimately not be saved. And we know that Paul is saying that you will not be saved because he uses the word “unless.” “by which you are being saved…unless you believed in vain.” Obedience does not save you, or anyone else, and never can. You can only be saved through faith in Jesus that He will save you. But real faith, faith that is not dead, faith that is not in vain, will “cause” you to obey. Real faith will drive you to be obedient. How can you have confidence that you are indeed saved. John wrote the letter of 1 John so that we can have assurance of salvation. 1 John 5:13 CSB “I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.” 1 John, from start to finish lays out that if you want to “know that you have eternal life,” if you want to be sure of your salvation, then look at your life. Are you walking just as Jesus walked? Are you keeping his commands? Are you keeping his words? If your faith is real, it will cause you to be obedient. And this is not just true for “some” or “most” Christians. It is what God said is true for all who know Him. Real faith drives obedience, God still demands obedience from us who are in a covenant relationship with Him, even though it is not why we are saved, it is evidence of whether or not we are saved.
