End Times Evening Devotional Series

“THE GREAT DAY OF THE LORD”

II Pet. 3:1-12

People have always been fascinated by the idea of when the end of the world will come!  The people of every generation have sought to know when the end time will come.  Some have even gone so far to predict a place or time for some cataclysmic event – the name “Armageddon” is usually thrown about freely in referral to these events!  But tonight, I want to look at what the apostle Peter has to say to us about the great day of the Lord!

( A reading of the text in II Pet. 3:1-11)

There are several points that I want you to notice from this passage as it relates to the end times, (The Great Day of the Lord):

1. END TIMES OUGHT TO STIR OUR IMAGINATION FOR HEAVEN:

Peter indicated that this 2nd letter is intended to “stir up their pure mind”.  Complacency is a danger in every age, isn’t it?  We go along so far until we began to take things for granted.  Complacency is a dangerous thing in any endeavor – but especially in the church!

                        (Heb. 2:1-3, I Cor. 10:12, Jms. 1:21-24)

2. END TIMES ARE PRECEEDED BY SELFISH INDIVISUALISM:

Peter states that one of the tell-tale signs of the coming of the end is that people care more about doing their own thing than obeying God!  Look around, we are in those days where selfish individualism, greed and hedonistic thought is the order of the day!

I’m OK~ You’re OK, If it feels good do it, You deserve a break today… the list is long and wide but it underlies a selfishness that has forgotten about God!

                        ( Dute. 6:10-12, Prov. 14:34, Isa. 59:1-2, I Tim. 4:1-2)

3. END TIMES CONFIRM THE NEED TO GET RIGHT WITH GOD TODAY:

Peter says in verse 8-11 that it will be a shame if anyone is lost and goes to hell!  It’ll be a shame because God is so longsuffering, (patient), in giving us opportunities to repent and get right with God!  But Peter reminds us that God’s patience will one day come to an end!  - THE DAY OF THE LORD WILL COME!   We don’t talk very much about judgment these days, it’s not politically correct and makes us seem intolerant, but the Bible speakes of the coming judgment!

                                     (Heb. 9:27, II Cor. 5:10, Rev. 20:12 )

The great day of the Lord is coming, Are you ready?  If not; why not?  Why not get ready while there is still time by obedience to the gospel, H-B-R-C-B while we together stand and sing!
