"The Value of a Letting our Light Shine"

Matt. 5:14

As Christians in a dark world, the Lord calls you and me to let our light shine in our dark corner of the world.  Spiritual darkness is everywhere.  We live in a time where dishonesty seems to be the norm, or talking dirty, or talking against other people; where sin is a laughing matter and a way of life people don't even give much thought to. And then there's you. You're should be the living proof that there's another way to be; that there's hope, instead of despair. There's integrity, instead of deceit. There's looking out for others, instead of just looking out for self. You're the light!

In Matthew 5:14, Jesus says, "You are the light of the world, a city set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do people light a candle and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick, and it gives light to all in the house, Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven."

  1. IT DOESN’T TAKE A LOT OF LIGHT TO MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE!

Think of a time when it was dark and scary, even a little night light is of great comfort during those dark times.  Spiritually speaking we let our lights shine when we use what we have for the Lord.  David used his slingshot, Moses used his rod, Sampson used the jawbone of an ass, Joshua used a horn to topple the walls of Jerico.  What do you have that can be used to shine light into the darkness?  A smile?  A kind word of cheer?  A simple prayer said in humility?  All these things God can use to shine the light of His love to others through you!

  1. SATAN WILL TRY TO PUT OUT YOUR LIGHT!

The bible says in I Pet. 5:8 “your adversary the devil goeth about as a roaring lion seeking whom he might devour”.  He wants to prevent you from letting your light shine for the Lord.  He does this by discouragement and disappointment.  Why is it so hard to do good works and doing the wrong thing seems so easy?  Don’t give in, don’t give up!  Don’t let your light grow dim or go out – keep your lamps trimed and burning bright until one day you hear him say well done!

  1. THERE IS A NEED FOR LIGHT EVERYWHERE!

There are some people try to put all the lights together and make one big spotlight. Can you imagine a dark house where you put all the light fixtures in one room and leave the rest of the house dark? No, you need to spread the light into all the dark places. And if the Lord has placed you in one of those dark places, realize He has trusted you to be His light there.  That’s why we sing that old spiritual “This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine!”

I pray that you’ll continue to let your light shine for Jesus – here at Good Shepard and everywhere you go!
