Intro:

There are many opinions about what the future holds, and everyone thinks they have it right.
I know a few things:
GOD knows exactly what is going to happen
What He has revealed in His word, will occur
It is through understanding and handling HIS word accurately that we can know anything about the future of this world
Two opposing views:
There is a coming apostacy
There is a coming great revival and many to be saved.
I think BOTH are right.
Apostasy:
What do the following verses indicate about the future (from the author’s day)?
1 Tim. 4:1-5
2 Tim. 3:1-9
Luke 18:8
1 Timothy 4:1–5 ESV
1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, 2 through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared, 3 who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. 4 For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5 for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer.
1 Timothy 4:1-5
1 Timothy 4:1–5 ESV

2 Timothy 3:1–5 ESV
1 But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, 4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.
Luke 18:8 ESV
8 I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”
The other side of the issue points to our text this evening.
Revelation 7:1–7 ESV
1 After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth, that no wind might blow on earth or sea or against any tree. 2 Then I saw another angel ascending from the rising of the sun, with the seal of the living God, and he called with a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm earth and sea, 3 saying, “Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, until we have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads.” 4 And I heard the number of the sealed, 144,000, sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel: 5 12,000 from the tribe of Judah were sealed, 12,000 from the tribe of Reuben, 12,000 from the tribe of Gad, 6 12,000 from the tribe of Asher, 12,000 from the tribe of Naphtali, 12,000 from the tribe of Manasseh, 7 12,000 from the tribe of Simeon, 12,000 from the tribe of Levi, 12,000 from the tribe of Issachar,

1. The work of Angels

What do we see angels doing in ?
Revelation 7:1–3 ESV
1 After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth, that no wind might blow on earth or sea or against any tree. 2 Then I saw another angel ascending from the rising of the sun, with the seal of the living God, and he called with a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm earth and sea, 3 saying, “Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, until we have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads.”
Revelation 7:1–2 ESV
1 After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth, that no wind might blow on earth or sea or against any tree. 2 Then I saw another angel ascending from the rising of the sun, with the seal of the living God, and he called with a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm earth and sea,
A. Controlling the Wind
A. Controlling the Wind
A. Controlling the Wind
They held back what was to come.
No harm to earth, sea or trees.
There was a brief pause for the other angel to do its work.
B. Sealing the servants of God
Seal-
No details on exact nature.
Will others see it? Will believers see it on each other? Will the lost be able to see it?
Unfortunately we are left with questions, not answers on this detail
The seal sets them aside as servants of God
The 144,000 witnesses
They are marked and called for a purpose
We will examine them in more detail in a moment.

2. The 144,000 witnesses

There is much misunderstanding about the nature of the 144,000
Example: 1 religion teaches that only 144,000 get to go to heaven.
Another, the “flying roll cult” taught that only the overcomes in their group can be in the 144,000 and that their perfection becomes so complete they will never die.
What does teach us about the witnesses?
Revelation 7:4–8 ESV
4 And I heard the number of the sealed, 144,000, sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel: 5 12,000 from the tribe of Judah were sealed, 12,000 from the tribe of Reuben, 12,000 from the tribe of Gad, 6 12,000 from the tribe of Asher, 12,000 from the tribe of Naphtali, 12,000 from the tribe of Manasseh, 7 12,000 from the tribe of Simeon, 12,000 from the tribe of Levi, 12,000 from the tribe of Issachar, 8 12,000 from the tribe of Zebulun, 12,000 from the tribe of Joseph, 12,000 from the tribe of Benjamin were sealed.
Revelation 7:3–8 ESV
3 saying, “Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, until we have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads.” 4 And I heard the number of the sealed, 144,000, sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel: 5 12,000 from the tribe of Judah were sealed, 12,000 from the tribe of Reuben, 12,000 from the tribe of Gad, 6 12,000 from the tribe of Asher, 12,000 from the tribe of Naphtali, 12,000 from the tribe of Manasseh, 7 12,000 from the tribe of Simeon, 12,000 from the tribe of Levi, 12,000 from the tribe of Issachar, 8 12,000 from the tribe of Zebulun, 12,000 from the tribe of Joseph, 12,000 from the tribe of Benjamin were sealed.
They are 144,000 Jewish believers, 12,000 from each tribe.
that is clear in the text
Not really much confusion there if you let God’s word speak.
Because of the dispersion of the Jews around the world, these 144,000 are uniquely positioned to carry out their mission.
Many scholars believe they become missionaries much like Paul, proclaim Christ to all.
There will be a great soul harvest in the end.
What does say about the work of God’s Spirit in the last days?
Joel 2:28–29 ESV
28 “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. 29 Even on the male and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit.
We are in those days
Peter proclaimed this in as he explained what was happening when the Spirit baptized an indwelt the believers.
They will declare the good news that Jesus saves.

3. The Great Harvest

Revelation 7:9–17 ESV
9 After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” 11 And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.” 13 Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come?” 14 I said to him, “Sir, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 “Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence. 16 They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. 17 For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”
A. Unprecedented Success
How does describe the multitude?
Revelation 7:9 ESV
9 After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands,
Heaven is populated by people from the whole planet!
All the strife an division we have invented to separate people will be undone by the gospel among the redeemed.
Notice the description:
nation, tribes, peoples, and languages
In Christ, there is no division!
What does say about our unity in Christ?
Galatians 3:28 ESV
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
Again, we see worship break out in Heaven.
Revelation 7:9–12 ESV
Amen.”
Rev. 7:
Revelation 7:10 ESV
10 and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”
worship is contagious!
2. Special Place in Heaven
What place do those in this multitude have in heaven?
Revelation 7:13–17 ESV
13 Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come?” 14 I said to him, “Sir, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation.
They came out of the Great Tribulation.
Scholars are split on the interpretation.
a. they were martyred during the Tribulation
b. They are those who survive the Tribulation.
I side with the first view.
that makes these saints correspond to
Revelation 6:9–11 ESV
9 When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the witness they had borne. 10 They cried out with a loud voice, “O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” 11 Then they were each given a white robe and told to rest a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers should be complete, who were to be killed as they themselves had been.
They serve before the Throne.
They serve before the Throne.

Conclusion:

Instead of seeking to be part of the elite 144,000, as some falsely do, let us follow their example and do our part.
What is the church’s mission?
Matthew 28:19–20 ESV
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
