Acts 2:37–43 CSB
37 When they heard this, they were pierced to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles: “Brothers, what should we do?” 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children, and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” 40 With many other words he testified and strongly urged them, saying, “Be saved from this corrupt generation!” 41 So those who accepted his message were baptized, and that day about three thousand people were added to them. 42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and signs were being performed through the apostles.
Acts 2:36–43 CSB
36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know with certainty that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.” 37 When they heard this, they were pierced to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles: “Brothers, what should we do?” 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

The Question v.37

Acts 2:36–37 CSB
36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know with certainty that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.” 37 When they heard this, they were pierced to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles: “Brothers, what should we do?”
Remember we ended last week with Peter’s final claim that they had Crucified the messiah in verse 36
So, in verse 37 they asked what they Should do? The idea applied here is they made a huge mistake and want to make the future right.
Those that listened to Peter’s sermon took them personally and they had a profound amount of regret for what they had done. Most of them in all likelihood had agreed with the action of putting Jesus to death.
Peter’s information on who Jesus was came as a major shock to them and they were pierced to the heart by what He said
So in verse 37 they asked what they Should do? The idea applied here is they made a hudge mistake and want to make the future right.
The scripture says they were pierced to the heart.
Those that listened to Peter’s sermon took them personally and they had a perfound amount of regret for what they had done. Most of them in all licklyhood had agreed with the action of putting Jusus to death.
Peter’s information on who Jusus was came as a major shock to them and they were peirced to the heart by what He said
It literally means the feeling of being stabbed with a knife, it meant that they had profound regret. This instance is the only time the term is used in the New Testament
The scripture says they were pierced to the heart. It litteraly means the fealing of being stabbed with a knife, it ment that they had perfound regret. This instence is the only time the term is used in the New Testement
Note the power of the crucifixion in Scripture.

The Answer 38-40

Acts 2:38–40 CSB
38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children, and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” 40 With many other words he testified and strongly urged them, saying, “Be saved from this corrupt generation!”
Peter Begins By telling them to repent. The word repent literally means to make a 180 degree turn from sinful ways
It shows a change of direction in life not just a change of attitude, but of action too.
Repent shows a complete Change of mind
(note I am sorry and will you forgive me)
It shows a change of direction in life not just a change of attitude, but of action too.
Peter continues and says be Baptized, so why does it sound like Baptism is a part of salvation here?
Repent shows a complete Change of mind
(note I am sorry and will you forgive me)
Peter continues and says be Baptised, So why does it sound like Baptisim is a part of savation here?
Acts 2:38 CSB
38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 2:28 ESV
28 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’
We must study all of Scripture and through all of Scripture it is basally clear that Baptism does not save you.
What peter is saying is repent and then be Baptized as a visible show of your repentance
To Israel Circumcision was a visible external marker of the fact that an individual was part of the covenant. Baptism is a visible external show of one’s relationship with Christ.
Baptism is not for the forgiveness of sins but rather is a visible example of that forgiveness.
All through scripture although Baptism is not required for salvation it accompanies salvation because it is just expected
What perte is saying is repent and then be Baptized as a visible show of your repentence
Baptism is in the Name of Jesus Christ and identifies a person as dead to the world and alive in Christ.
To Isriel Circumsision was a visible external marker of the the fact that an individual was part of the covenent. Baptisim is a visible external show of ones relationship with Christ.
But again, Baptism does not save you
Baptisim is not for the forgiveness of sins but rather is a visible example of that forgivness.
All through scripture although Baptisim is not required for salvation it accompinies salvation because it is just expected
Baptisim is in the Name of Jesus Christ and identifies a person as dead to the world and alive in Christ.
But again Baptisim does not save you
Acts 2:39 CSB
39 For the promise is for you and for your children, and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”
The Promise is the gift of the Holy Spirit. Jesus promiced to send the spirit to dwell in those who belong in Him, enableing them to trust and follow Him as there savior and Lord
The Gift of the holy spirit is a wonderful blessing bestowed on anyone at the point of conversion.
This passage has sometimes been taken as a way to justify baptizing infents if we take it out of context. However, the point is to express the unlimited mercy of God which enbraces the current and future generations of decendents.
In addition when the Jewish Mob called for Christ’s Crusifixion they called “His blood be on us and on our Children” Which lickly also could have been a conection here.
Acts 2:40 CSB
40 With many other words he testified and strongly urged them, saying, “Be saved from this corrupt generation!”
By Luke’s statement “With many other words” He indicates that this is a summary of Peter’s sermon and not the entirety of the message. He wrote down the vital Parts.
Peter stated “Be saved from this courrupt generation” He urges his hearers to hasen and not wait to be saved.
He urged them to escape the fate that would otherwise befall them. The term corrupt generation is applied in the Old Testement to those who rebelled against God in the wilderness and in the New testement it applies to those who reject Jesus.

The resault 41-43

Acts 2:41 ESV
41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
Acts 2:40 ESV
40 And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.”
Many of those who herd Peter’s Sermon accepted what He said and indicated their acceptance by being Baptized. the result was a large number of new converts were added to the Church.
The figure is large and is likely not an exact figure but how Luke describes it, either way the point is gotten that it is a very large figure. and it would not have been unusual for a crowd this large to gather especially at a large festival such as Pentecost.

Acts
Acts 2:42 ESV
42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.

Breaking of Bread
Prayer: The early Christians knew that they could not meet life in their own strength and that they did not need to. They always went to God before they went out to the world. Christians live in reverence because they know that the whole earth is the temple of the living God
