Introduction:
Pledge
Passage:
7 “Woe to the world for temptations to sin!
For it is necessary that temptations come, but woe to the one by whom the temptation comes!
8 And if your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away.
It is better for you to enter life crippled or lame than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into the eternal fire.
9 And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away.
It is better for you to enter life with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into the hell of fire.

Review last weeks message:
The title of the message last week was “Basic Instructions”
We walked away with the understanding that the Lord had given the disciples 3 basic instructions when it came to the entrance into the Kingdom of Heaven.
• The Instructions (To enter the Kingdom of Heaven)
1. REPENT
a. “Turn” (3) “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn ...”
2. TRANSFORM
a. “Become like Children” (3) “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn AND BECOME LIKE CHILDREN, ....”
b.
What does becoming like children look like?
(Open to Instructions)
i. Humility (4)“Whoever Humbles himself ...”
ii.
Hospitality (Welcome) (5) “Whoever receives one such child ....”
1. Welcoming people in ...
2.
Not keeping them out ...
3. Embracing all walks of life ...
4.
Not placing ungodly requirements to enter into ...
• Don’t forget about the Honor - Shame Society they lived in.
• Jesus was totally against it.
3. Model
a. “Non-deterrent”
i. Don’t cause someone to Sin
1. Encourage them to live a life for Jesus.
Body:
Moving into the next 3 verse Jesus expounds on the idea of the one who would cause someone to sin.
(Vs 7 reads, “Woe to the world for temptations to sin!
For it is necessary that temptations come, but woe to the one by whom the temptation comes!”
Looking at the word “Temptation” ...
Greek: Skandalon (Scandal) An action/circumstance that leads one to act contrary to a proper course of action or set of beliefs (Better English word may be “ENTICEMENT!”
Looking at the word “Necessary” ...
Greek: Ananke .... Necessary as inherent in the nature of things (Better English word would be “INEVITABLE”
How Verse 7 could read then .... Woe to the world for enticing man to sin!
For it is inevitable that enticement to sin will come, but woe to the one by who this enticement comes.”
He basically says this, that person .... “is a stumbling block.”
Would you agree with me, there have been times where a family member, friend, or even a leader has been a stumbling block for you?
Worse yet, maybe you have been a stumbling block for someone?
Give examples of being a stumbling block for others:
Sex with other women
My ego getting in the way and causing others to stumble
Gossiping
My ignorance: Thinking I was doing good for someone but not listening to the Holy Spirit and becoming a stumbling block
Looking at these three verses (7-9) they are Jesus expounding on the idea of being a Model.
Don’t be a stumbling block for others!
He now directs this conversation from how we could be a stumbling block for others to INWARD (Ourselves)
Don’t be a stumbling block for yourself!
Jesus says “If you hands, feet, or eyes causes you to sin ...
Do 2 things ....
Cut it off (or tear it out)
This is all based on the idea of the “Importance of it”
He is not endorsing “self mutilation”
He is endorsing the dramatization of the “significance of Sin” and how it should be treated.
It is better to be Crippled or lame in this life than to have all these things and miss out on Heaven.
Throw it away
Separate yourself from it!
Get as far away as possible.
Climax:
We know who entices us to sin! SATAN!
He doesn't make you do it he just uses people, or lies, or both to entice us to do it.
Scripture reveals 3 areas that temptation will come ....
The MIND!
“Get behind me, Satan!
You are a hindrance to me.
For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”
Temptation will come because our minds are ‘SET ON THINGS OF THIS WORLD.”
And not set on things of God.
The WORD!
“… They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.”
Temptation will come due to the disobeying of God’s Word! (
