Rudy Giuliani was a mayor in New York City. Before taking over, the city was in a lot of trouble. The crime rate was on the rise and because of that, people were afraid to be in the city. When he took over, his sole purpose was to clean up the city. Stop and frisk cut down on violent crime. Jay walkers were arrested. Graffiti was cleaned up immediately. Broken windows were replaced. He had a mission.
Do you know that Jesus also had a mission. He knew why He came into the habitat of sinful humanity.
Today, we will be looking
I wonder what answer we would get if we went around today asking people this very question, “What was Christ’s mission to our world?” But let me ask you, “Why did Christ come into our world?”

Jesus and His disciples were going up to Jerusalem. Jerusalem was about 20 miles away from Jericho and is about 3500 feet higher in elevation. From whatever side one approaches, one will always to be going up. which is one of the Psalms the pilgrims sang when they were going up to Jerusalem states, “Jerusalem is built like a city, that is closely compacted together. That is where tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord, to praise the name of the Lord according to the statute given to Israel.” We also see this in , “Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord and who shall stand in His holy place?

Mark tells us that Jesus was leading the way. And His disciples were following Him. He knew what He was walking into. He knew that He had to go up to Jerusalem to be the final offering that would reverse the fall of humanity. It was for this very purpose that He came. He was to be the final offering that would pry humanity from the grip of Satan. We are very close to seeing the fulfillment of God’s word to the Serpent, “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers, He shall crush your head, and you shall strike His heel ().”
I like what Luke said about Jesus in 9:51, “As the time approached for Him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.” He was prepared and determined as He led the way.
What does this say about our Savior?
Our Savior went boldly to the cross to liberated His children from the oppression of sin and death. He knew what was to happen to Him. But He embraced it because of the outcome. Therefore, we should praise Him and tell others about His work on our behalf. One of our responses to His sacrifice is to live righteously. Paul in states, “So, I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking.” One way to show our appreciation to Christ is to live in a way that honors Him.
Our Lord is Leader. We have a Savior who leads His people. If you claim to be a disciple of Christ, then you must follow His leading. In He states that He calls His sheep by name and leads them out. The 23rd Psalm conveys this sentiment. “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside still waters. He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name sake.” What does the Psalmist mean by “He leads me beside still waters and the paths of righteousness?” To lead us beside still waters means that He is leading us to a place where we can find rest for our weary souls. To lead us in the path of righteousness means that He leads us in a way such that we will represent Him well.
He led Israel from bondage in Egypt to the Wilderness.

In the last part of the disciples’ prayer, we read, “Lead us not into temptation.” Please spare us from difficult circumstances that would tempt us to disobey you.
The Song by Joseph Henry Gilmore conveys this sentiment. Mr. Gilmore who was a pastor wrote this song during the American civil war. One night as He was going to preach on in Philadelphia, he was consumed by the Lord’s leadership of His people. And He penned these words.

Still 'tis God's hand that leadeth me!
It is true, that those who are children of God are led by Him.
When it comes to humility and suffering, He does not only teach us but also leads us. Paul conveys this to us. In he writes, “And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death-even death on a cross!”

He leads us by His Holy Spirit. In , “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth.”
He leads us by His word. “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” To walk in the light means to live like Christ. When we live like Jesus, we are walking in the light.

Mark tells us that the disciples were amazed and afraid. The word for amazed is used 3 times in this gospel.
In , We read that Jesus entered the synagogue and began to teach. But there was a man with an unclean spirit and Jesus drove out the unclean spirit and the people were amazed and said “what is this? A new teaching and with authority!” We see the same word used in . After speaking with the rich young ruler, Jesus looked at His disciples and said, “Children, how hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God.” Mark writes that the disciples were amazed at His words.
The word amazed carries the idea of being shocked. The disciples were shocked by the determination of Christ but they were also terrified of what might happen to Him in Jerusalem.

These two emotions are seen through out the ministry of Jesus. When He does something the disciples were amazed and at other times they were terrified.
The disciples were amazed at the decision of Jesus but were afraid to identify with Him because of what lies ahead.
At times, we are like the disciples. We are amazed at Christ but are afraid to identify with Him. We do not want to identify with Him because we do not want to suffer like Him. Because of this, we become distant admirers of Christ.
Are you a distant admirer of Christ? Like the disciples, are you amazed but afraid that identifying with Him could lead to your persecution? So if this describes you then you are a safe Christian-you do not talk up your faith or talk up Christ, You do not let people know that you are a Christian.

This was not the first time Christ took his disciples aside to tell them what was about to happen. Jesus is making this passion prediction for the third time and each time, it gets clearer. The first time Jesus spoke about His upcoming death was in , “He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and teachers of the law and that He must be killed and after three days rise again.”
In He said, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men. They will kill Him, and after 3 days He will rise.”
The third prediction is the most elaborate. It has more detail in it than the first two predictions. “We are going up to Jerusalem,” He said, “and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn Him to death and will hand Him over to the Gentiles, who will mock Him and spit on Him, flog Him and kill Him. Three days later, He will rise.”
In this Passion Prediction, Jesus gave His disciples a detailed description of what was to happen to Him. In this prediction, He gave them more information than He had given them before. For the first time, He told them the city in which He would be crucified.
There are 7 points Christ made to His disciples:

The third passion prediction specified that Jesus would be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes.
Only the Third Passion prediction used legal language that “they will condemn Him to death.”This alludes to the trial before the chief priests and the Judean council.
Another unique feature is that “they will hand Him over to the Gentiles.” This remark points to the chief priests handing Him over to Pilate.
The third is the only one that speaks explicitly about the mistreatment of Jesus before the official penalties of whipping and crucifixion.
The third passion prediction is similar to the first two in speaking about Jesus’ death and resurrection.
This was the mission of Christ. He came into our world to die for sinful humanity. He came to redeem us from the curse of the Fall.

He knows everything. In theology we would say that He is omniscient. He listed everything that was to happen. And His death unfolded just as He said it would. Because of His accuracy, some claim that the predictions were written after the fact. They claim that Jesus did not predict His death, but that the disciples came up with the predictions after it all took place.
The Psalmist point out the omniscience of God. He says in . “You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down. You are familiar with all my ways.” The Psalmist is saying that God knows everything about Him. There is nothing in His life that catches God by surprise.
God knows everything about you and me. There are times we may feel that we can hide from God, but we are making a great mistake. No one hides from God. Our thoughts are as plain to Him. In He states, “I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.”
In , John indicated, Jesus refused to entrust Himself to those who saw the signs and believed in His name. “For He knew all people. He did not need any testimony about mankind, for He knew what was in each person.”
Our life is like an open book before Christ. He knows everything about you and me.

Christ fulfilled His mission. He came to redeem God’s children from sin and reverse the Fall. And at His death, He said, “It is finished.” Alleluia, what a Savior.
