15Do not love the world or anything in it. If you love the world, love for the Father is not in you.

16Here is what people who belong to this world do. They try to satisfy what their sinful natures want to do. They long for what their sinful eyes look at. They brag about what they have and what they do. All of this comes from the world. It doesn’t come from the Father.

17The world and its evil longings are passing away. But those who do what God wants them to do live forever.

INTRODUCTION

A hypocrite is hated by everyone
A hypocrite is someone who says/does one thing and says/does another.
Now we are all guilty of hypocrisy at some point.
Jesus speaks against hypocrisy 20 times in scripture!
Someone once said, “I would rather be known in life as an honest sinner, than a lying hypocrite.”
What makes someone a hypocrite is someone who lives that way as if its okay, or maybe don’t recognize it.
Here is a short test if you are hypocrite: if you don’t practice this maybe you shouldn’t call yourself a follow of Jesus:
Matthew 5:28–30 NKJV
But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.
Matthew 28:19–20 NKJV
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
Mat 28:19-20
Matthew 28:19–20 NKJV

Matthew 5:28–30 NKJV

Matthew 4:17 NKJV
From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Matthew 4:17 NKJV
From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Repentance isnt saying sorry, that is confession, reptance is changing.
Are you changing?
Matthew 5:44–46 NKJV
But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?
Matthew 9:37–38 NKJV
Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”
John 14:15 NKJV
“If you love Me, keep My commandments.
John 14:15 NKJV
“If you love Me, keep My commandments.
These are just a few of His commands. Do you practice them? If not, maybe dont be a hypocritew and say your a follower of Jesus. Just say your a follow of your desires.
Someone once said, “I would rather be known in life as an honest sinner, than a lying hypocrite.”
Our text today addresses hypocrites. Maybe it is you, if you don’t think so then it definitely speaks of you. If you are thinking I do practice but I fail sometimes then this verse is a warning for you:
If

The NET Bible Chapter 2

2:15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him, 2:16 because all that is in the world (the desire of the flesh and the desire of the eyes and the arrogance produced by material possessions)37 is not from the Father, but is from the world. 2:17 And the world is passing away with all its desires, but the person who does the will of God remains38 forever

15 Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. 16 For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. 17 And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.

Someone who says one thing and does another.
Now we are all guilty of hypocrisy at some point.
Amplified Bible Chapter 2

17 And the world passes away and disappears, and with it the forbidden cravings (the passionate desires, the lust) of it; but he who does the will of God and carries out His purposes in his life abides (remains) forever.

What makes someone a hypocrite is someone who lives that way.
Jesus said about hypocrites:
Our text today addresses hypocrisy:

THE PROBLEM (v.15)

1 John 2:15 NKJV
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
When we read “the world” in this text this pretty much means everything but God.
Just like Israel in the OT repeatedly had to decide allegiance to God or allegiance to the pagan nations around them. Christians must also choose allegiance to God than to this world.
The problem is that God’s love is not in anyone that loves the world and the things in the world.
Have you heard of a love compatibility test?
15 vDo not love the world or the things in the world. wIf anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him
This verse is a love compatibility test.
Do you want to see if your relationship with God will work?
Well if you love the world and the things in this world you wont have a relationship with God.
but what if it is not bad?
Romans 12:2 NKJV
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
As Philo (a Jewish philosopher from 20-50 AD) said, “It is impossible for love to the world to coexist with love to God, as it is impossible for light and darkness to coexist.”
As Augustine (Roman Christian philosopher in 354 - 430AD) said so well, “man has a God-shaped hole” in his life.
We try to fill that hole with earthly things, but we can only find peace and fulfilment in Him! My own desires is the curse of Eden!
As Augustine said so well, “man has a God-shaped hole” in his life. We try to fill that hole with earthly things, but we can only find peace and fulfilment in Him! Independence is the curse of Eden!
Philo: “It is impossible for love to the world to coexist with love to God, as it is impossible for light and darkness to coexist.”
Now if you understand and obey what God’s says here see what John says later:
1 John 3:1 NKJV
Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.
*NOTE: the word know is “genosko”
Let me clarify if you give more attention to anything that belongs to this earth, God’s love is not in you.
but what if it is not bad?
Romans 12:2 NKJV
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

THE REASON (v.16)

The reason why love of the world is not compatible with the love of God is because the things of this world have not come from God
The New King James Version. Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982. Print.THE REASON (v.16)
Before we talk about what comes from this world, what are some things that come from God?
The breathe of life (; ; ; ; ; ; ; )

Spiritual Gifts (; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ;

What is from this world (remember “world” in the text probably means everything that is not God). So the text says 3 things about everything that is not from God is:
Lust of flesh (“sarx” - fleshly) - Cravings
Desiring to please ourselves.
James 1:14–15 NKJV
But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.
Jesus said in
Mark 4:19 NKJV
and the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
Paul said in
Galatians 5:17 NKJV
For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.
Lust of eyes - Covetousness
Desiring what others have whether it is who they are, or what they own.
As Jesus said in
Matthew 5:28 NKJV
But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Wants from the world are not from God its all meaningless and dust.
The Jews recognized that the eyes are the windows of the soul. Sin begins in the thought life and works its way out to action.

Utley, Robert James. The Beloved Disciple’s Memoirs and Letters: The Gospel of John, I, II, and III John. Volume 4. Marshall, Texas: Bible Lessons International, 1999. Print. Study Guide Commentary Series.
Pride of life - Possessions
Whether it is loving yourself, the things you own, or the things you achieved.
It is absolutely meaningless and nothing to God.
God sees who you really are, and knows what you have… its all dust.
What is amazing to me is that God knows exactly what and who we are… He knows the worst about us, yet He loves us the most!

THE SOLUTION (v.17)

1 John 2:17 NET
And the world is passing away with all its desires, but the person who does the will of God remains forever.
1 John 2:17 AMP
And the world passes away and disappears, and with it the forbidden cravings (the passionate desires, the lust) of it; but he who does the will of God and carries out His purposes in his life abides (remains) forever.
God is getting rid of all the loves of this world! If you love them God will get rid of you to!
Matthew 7:17–20 NKJV
Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Therefore by their fruits you will know them.
aMatthew 7:17–20
You are either a good tree or a bad tree.
Now I am not saying we are saved by works… I am saying we are saved from our sins only by Jesus. But if you still love your sin is it really salvation.... I think people think salvation is salvation from the penalty of sin, no salvation is salvation from sin and its penalties. If you love the world Jesus cant save you, because you really don’t want salvation.
That is why the verse ends by saying “ but he who does the will of God abides forever.”
What is the will of God?
but he who does the will of God abides forever.
2 Peter 3:9 NKJV
The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
The New King James Version. Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982. Print.
“ not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.”
John 6:29 NLT
Jesus told them, “This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.”
not willing that any should perish but othat all should come to repentance.
So do you love the world or God or are you hypocrite?
“We must be in the world and not of itby loving God and what He has given to us!
We must love God. When we love God we love what He loves.
Isaiah 40:6–8 NKJV
The voice said, “Cry out!” And he said, “What shall I cry?” “All flesh is grass, And all its loveliness is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, Because the breath of the Lord blows upon it; Surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.”
Isaiah 40:
Do you live by the word of God, or by the curse of desires?
Jesus knows how difficult it is for us to love Him and not the world that is why He prayed:
in
John 17:14–17 NKJV
I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.
John 17:11 NKJV
Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are.
