God’s Will Is Revealed In Christ.

10 so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, 12 and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. 13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
There was a time when “a calling card” was a way to let someone know you called on them and not a way to pay a phone bill. From a business standpoint, a calling card was an invitation for a person pursue the services offered.
The same could be said about the calling card for a local church. But, what is the Calvary Independent Calling Card? Is our Sunday school the calling card, the morning worship, a small group study, Awana, choir, family, etc.?
The church is God’s calling card promoting the supremacy of Jesus Christ.
The way we speak reveals Calvary’s calling card. Our action, values, interests, etc., is a calling card to those God has placed around us. Faith in the Church at Colossi was the calling card for Paul.
But Paul didn’t stop with their faith. He prayed that they would gain a deeper knowledge and understanding of God’s will. The test was to live their lives worthy of the Lord.
We live at a time when a church is evaluated in many ways. Its leadership, Preaching, programs, music, teaching, community service, technology etc. But, how does the Bible define the church? Paul defines the church as the body of Christ Colossians 1:18. Sense definition: A congregation of believers understood as a human body; often of the universal church.
In whom we have redemption - the forgiveness of sins
Note: forgiveness comes only through the Son. The church doesn’t save people God the Father is saving people through His Son Jesus Christ. Yet, Christ became the visible representation of the invisible God. In John 17 Jesus speaking to the Father prays for protection for those who remain.
Paul moves from the faith of the Colossian church to his prayer and included the details of his prayer. He prayed that they would be filled with the knowledge of His will through all wisdom and understanding given through the Holy Spirit.
The goal is to live a life worthy of the Lord and pleasing him in every way

It is God’s will that His Son would bear His image.
It is God’s will that His Son would bear His image.
The Son is the image bearer. How can this be? How can the visible define the invisible? How can a visible Son of God be the image of the invisible God? Colossians 1:15 identifies Christ as the Image of God!
15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.
First, the Son is Jesus Christ - Paul connects the Son with the name Jesus Christ in 1 Corinthians
9 God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Pauls says to the Corinthians, that God’s Son is Jesus Christ.
Also, Scripture testifies to the reality of eternal life!
27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”
John says we are to work for the food that endures for eternal life. Why, he adds because that is God’s will (seal of approval).
John says the Son is God
18 No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.
Jesus said anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.
9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.
So, the Son is the image of the invisible God!
image n. — a visual representation (of an object or scene or person or abstraction) produced on a surface.
The Visible and the Invisible: He is a likeness - resemblance - (statue or profile) of someone who is invisible adj. — or impossible to see. The revelation of God is a revealed in Christ.
Evidently Paul thought this to be most important for the church that is being infiltrated by false teaching.
The sovereignty of Christ as God is as necessary today as it was when Paul wrote this letter.
first ⇔ firstborn adj. — preceding all others in time or space or degree; probably understood as still including all the rights and privileges that accompany being a physical firstborn. The First begotten Son of God.
The ESV Study Bible Chapter 1
What Paul had in mind was the rights and privileges of a firstborn son, especially the son of a monarch who would inherit ruling sovereignty. This is how the expression is used of David: “I will make him the firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth” (Ps. 89:27).
Paul’s places Christ as the top priority in God’s will.
Creation: The universe understood as an object which God brought into existence. Original formation
Conclusion: Jesus Christ has been given the right’s and privileges of sovereign rule.
As the Psalmist says,
27 And I will appoint him to be my firstborn, the most exalted of the kings of the earth.
It is God’s will that we know all things were created by and for Christ.

16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
All things created: The Point (Everything) - bolsters faith - Stop and think about God’s work beyond what is visible. A local church upholding the truth of God through Christ has to be controlled not only by what we see in the world around us, but also has to be controlled by the things we cannot see.
17 And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
31 Then the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with his sword drawn. So he bowed low and fell facedown.
22 My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, Your Majesty.”
God salvation for all! Created through Him and for Him: Strongs: in relationship to Christ as denoting the channel of an act;
You and I have been created through Christ for Christ. This message of firsts must not be lost in a church. We exist because of Him and for Him.
It is God’s will that His Son is Supreme.

18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
leader ⇔ head n. — a person who is in charge; understood as a head which is the uppermost part of a human body. Strong: figurehead
church ⇔ body n. — a congregation of believers understood as a human body; often of the universal church.
4983. σῶμα sōma, so´-mah; from 4982; the body (as a sound whole), used in a very wide application, lit. or fig.:—bodily, body, slave.
church (universal) n. — all believers across the world understood as if a singular assembly; sometimes of all believers throughout time.
1577. ἐκκλησία ĕkklēsia, ek-klay-see´-ah; from a comp. of 1537 and a der. of 2564; a calling out, i.e. (concr.) a popular meeting, espec. a religious congregation (Jewish synagogue, or Chr. community of members on earth or saints in heaven or both):—assembly, church.
The Beginning and the firstborn from among the dead.
Beginning (talking about Christ and the Church). He is the beginning of the church. Whatever that means, whatever the includes, Jesus Christ is the beginning of it.
Firstborn from among the dead. A clear reference to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Others were brought back from the dead; but the resurrection of Jesus (the God/man) started something new. Every believer has a hope in Jesus Christ that moves them beyond human existence into the realm of the born again dead.
Supremacy: SENSE: To be or become ranking above all others. Strongs: To have preeminence in rank and in influence
It is God’s will that His Son reconciles all things.

By making peace through His blood shed on the cross.
The church resists false teaching by proclaiming Christ in everything. A local church must know and grow in its understanding of God’s Will by placing Christ first in all things.
