Reason 1 We are part of a society that that has more focus on self than on God and his ways and as a result, God’s laws are ignored.
Lastly, it is part of this year’s theme verse
Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong. And do everything in love.

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
Why do we do what we do when we do it?

The answer to this question makes all the difference
Are we very gifted in speaking? Maybe you can speak in tongues just like Paul mentioned 2 verses earlier.
All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; But the Lord weigheth the spirits.

We will be like this to God and to others, if the motive isn’t love
Verse 2 We can have the highest spiritual gifts (prophecy, words of knowledge, & the gift of faith) but without love we are nothing
Verse 3 We can give everything away, even our life, but without love, we gain nothing

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant
or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;
it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.
Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Paul makes an assumption here -he assumes that we acknowledge truth as coming from God
Secular culture wants to redefine truth according to its values if this is done, it results in a corrupt version of love
The same thing was happening in the time of Isaiah
Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; That put darkness for light, and light for darkness; That put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, And prudent in their own sight!
Verse 7 should have some explanation
Beareth all things -Beareth has the idea of covering with silence, as in enduring patiently
Like a parent who is patiently teaching their child to walk or read or ride a bike
And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.

believeth all things
Believeth all things, -to have faith in
believes all things that are to be believed -all the truths and promises of God -all the things that God is doing and wants to do in someone’s life
Hopeth all things, -to have an expectation -expect God’s will to be done
Endureth all things -the things that are hard in life, knowing that we will be rewarded in the end if we finish well. It isn’t about starting well, we are rewarded according to our faithfullness
These 4 verses are a definition or description of God
We can see this in the book of 1 John -several times he says that God is love
He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

God is the ultimate definition of love!
Let’s take this one more step: If you have the Spirit of God living within you, then your spirit man is perfect
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

2 Peter 1
Paul makes an assumption in this passage. He assumes that you know the type of love that he is talking about.
And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
Emancipation Proclamation
Abraham declared all slaves to be freed in specific states
In the same way, Jesus declares us righteous (meaning we do what is right) if we accept him as our Savior and Lord
Let’s all say verse 4-7 together and put in our name where there is a blank

Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

Paul concludes this section by comparing Love to Prophecy.
Why did Paul do that? Likely he did this because prophecy is the highest or most important gift. We can see this in chapter 14:1
Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.
but even the greatest spiritual gift is temporary and will be replaced with complete comprehension of who God is
On this side of eternity we all are like a child in our understanding of God
It is important that we always remember this -it allows us to walk in humility
In v.12, the word translated, “darkly” comes from a Greek word that actually refers to a “dark saying” or riddle
Conclusion
Conclusion
As we have reflected on the definition of love, has the Holy Spirit convicted you of areas in your heart that are a distortion of true love? Have you been going through the motions with your heart not engaged? Let’s not be a noisy gong, but a skilled instrument of God’s love.
Ask the Holy Spirit, "What is one action that you would like me to take today in demonstration of love?”
If you feel prompted to say or do something that you weren’t already planning on doing, then stand up.
