Jesus, Jesus, Jesus; there’s just something about that name
Master, Savior, Jesus, like the fragrance after the rain;
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, let all Heaven and Earth proclaim
Kings and Kingdoms will all pass away
But there’s something about that name.....
There is one way to be saved, to submit yourself to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. There is only one way to experience Joy after you are saved and that is to submit yourself to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. To submit to Jesus as Lord, means that you have relinquished ALL rights to your life. Your life is not yours any more, you do not trump Jesus when it comes to the plans you have made for your life. God desires that in every area you submit to His Son for your benefit and His glory.
We are continuing our series on the gospel of Mark, and what we have seen thus far is this amazing account of the ministry of Jesus beginning. It all began with JTB coming out proclaiming a message of repentance and baptism for the forgiveness of sin, and as he calls cries out in the wilderness preparing the way for this coming King. JTB was the messenger sent to prepare the hearts of the people for this King chosen by God Himself who would be none other than His only begotten Son. As John stands by the river Jordan preaching and baptizing all of the surrounding cities were coming out to him and then over the hills came Jesus. Jesus comes and is baptized to fulfill all righteousness and though JTB is reluctant he baptizes Jesus,
Then we saw how the Spirit lead Jesus out into the wilderness to tempted by Satan. As we study Mark we see that he uses short clips from these events to paint a larger picture and in every way Mark is trying to show us that JESUS IS LORD that He is not merely and example to try to follow, but that HE IS THE KING WE SHOULD WILLINGLY SUBMIT TO, that He has true authority.
Jesus overcame the temptation showing that He was LORD OVER SATAN, then Jesus showed us in His preaching that He was LORD OVER SINNERS preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God. Then we see Jesus walking by the sea of Galilee where He finds some fishermen and walks up to them having no prior encounter with them and simply commands them to follow Him, and Jesus has so much power in His words that these men are compelled to drop everything they are doing, to walk away from their lives as they knew it and follow Him, not knowing where they would be going or what they would be doing.
That’s what happens when you see Jesus for who He is, the details don’t really matter, when the King calls and we hear Him clearly we follow. This calling of Simon, Andrew, James, and John; Displayed that Jesus was LORD OVER HIS SERVANTS.
With surgical precision Mark writes his gospel cutting through the to the heart of the actions taken by Jesus, and this morning were going to look at Jesus’ first day of ministry Jesus is going teach, he is going to cast out demons, and He is going to heal a sick woman, and at the end were going to see all of this pointing to one of the most important truths we find in all of the Bible.
Turn with me in your Bibles to
Mark 1:21–22 NKJV
Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught. And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
Mark 1:21-
Mark 1:23–26 NKJV
Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him.
Mark 1:23-
Mark 1:27–28 NKJV
Then they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? What new doctrine is this? For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.” And immediately His fame spread throughout all the region around Galilee.
Mark 1:27-
(Let’s pray)
So Jesus begins His ministry, and He walks into the center of town and begins to teach the scriptures, I mean He gets right down to business. He walks into the center of the city where the synagogue was located, He walks inside and starts teaching as if he ran the joint because HE DID. Now we don’t know what passage Jesus taught from, we don’t know His maneurisms did he sit or did he stand?
We don’t know but what we do know is that He is preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, how God was coming out to mankind, how the kingdom of Heaven had come down and God was establishing His kingdom here, and this was His King .

Jesus is Lord Over the Scriptures

Mark 1:22 ESV
And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.
Mark 1:22 ESV
And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.
As Jesus was teaching the people were astonished why?
Mark 1:
As Jesus was teaching the people were astonished why?
Because he taught them as one HAVING AUTHORITY and not as the scribes, He didn’t teach like the normal scribes, He was different, so how did the scribes teach?
Well how the scribes taught was by recording historical events form the OT. Then they would take the generations, upon generations, upon generations of scribes who would record these events and they would have interpretations, have assumptions and opinions about what these events meant. So it was generation upon generation of these opinions and these assumptions, and they would take them and have opinions about the opinions of the past, and then they would take these and they would form a NEW LAW that crushed the listeners. They would make man made rules, saying here is how you MUST live if you want God to love you.
He doesn’t love you His wrath is upon you but to ATTAIN HIS LOVE YOU MUST DO THESE THINGS, and these men would create these rules and place them on the people, that’s the way they taught. So the people felt the gravity and opression of religion, religion opposes the gospel. The gospel says that God sees man in their failure, God sees every way in which we fail Him and yet He comes to us.
GOD CAME TO MAN IN ORDER TO MAKE MEN RIGHT WITH HIM
Religion says: you must behave a certain way, perform certain tasks in order to gain a relationship with God. That’s man authored and cannot rescue anyone! “Religion is the default mode of the human heart.” So our natural knew jerk response is to try to obey a bunch of rules in order to gain the love of God. That’s why we feel frustration and exhaustion. We put the heavy yoke of religion on us, heres what happens… If religion is the default mode of man, then it will be the default teaching of man.
That is why we are so intense about teaching the gospel, because if we don’t we will be placing an unbiblical yoke on you, and you will leave every Sunday trying to create new ways or things you could do to please God. Which will only lead to more frustration and exhaustion. I DONT NEED TO TRY TO FIX MYSELF BECAUSE I CANNOT FIX MYSELF! I DONT NEED TO CREATE THINGS TO TRY TO PLEASE GOD, BECAUSE I CANNOT CREATE ANYTHING THAT WOULD PLEASE HIM.
However WHEN I KNOW THE THE SON OF GOD, AND HE WALKS WITH ME, WHEN I UNDERSTAND THAT HE IS WORKING ON ME, THEN I KNOW THAT GOD IS PLEASED WITH ME, because Gods being pleased with me flows out of my active relationship with Him.
People did not feel loved by God, when the scribes taught, they feel the weight of His wrath only. When the Bible says they were astonished this word means “struck with panic or fear”. There is 2 emotions going on here, on one hand He is teaching a new rule, a new way, a new type of reality that you cant attain God but He has come to you. So one one hand there sensing “this is good news” on the other hand all they have heard is God hates them. So if God is coming to man, then it must be to judge them..... so they are conflicted… do you see?
THEY ARE ASTONISHED
Jesus did not stand and preach His opinions, He came and preached the truth. We understand that His authority brings a unique emotion out of these people. Jesus doesn’t teach the way of the scribes, he came and everything about the way He taught displayed that He had authority from God.
AUTHORITY- Exousia
The power to do something about a problem
I may not like how ISIS is doing other Christians but I have no power in and of myself to do anything about it. I may not like that our government is filled with corrupt leaders, but I have no power to do anything about it. I may not like that alot of the people I love and care about are battling cancer, but I have no power to do anything about it.
BUT THERE IS ONE WHO HAS THE POWER TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!
These poor people burdened down by the weight of their sin felt helpless, and though they were frustrated and exhausted they had no power to do anything about it. But here comes Jesus and he is teaching them as the One who had the POWER TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THEIR PROBLEM! Now this word authority is an aggrivating word for most in our society today, we do not like the word authority do we?
Because it brings along with it another word that we hate… submission. We may say amen to it, but deep down we hate it. “I dont wanna submit to anything, I’m my own authority, I author my own life, if things go wrong it is up to me to fix it, dont tell me what to do..
So when it says Jesus spoke as one who had authority, because Jesus Christ is the supreme ruler over creation, He is the supreme author over your very life! People do not like this because if Jesus is really Lord then I must submit to Him… and that means some things in my life have to change. We have struggled with this ever since , Adam and Eve did not want to listen to the words of God they wanted to be on their own having total say so over their life, they wanted to pursue their own way. One of the clearest pictures of this is found in the book of , , and 21. We see 3 of the darkest chapters in all of the scriptures, there are things going on that we cant even fathom, there is greed, betrayl, murder, mutilation, war, hatred, more greed, abuse of power and authority, chaos in the land. As you read those chapters you begin to ask yourself why am I reading this?
Then you read the last verse: “in those days there was no King in Israel, and everyone did what was right in his own eyes.”
This is what we see when we turn on our televisions isn’t it? America stands at this end pass where nothing is the way it should be, abuse of power, mutilation, war, hate, greed, betrayal, murder.... Though we have a president people are simply just doing what is right in their own eyes and we are all having to suffer through it. If not put in check this mindset will destroy our nation.
All because we will not submit to the One who can bless us again.
That’s not the only place we see turmoil, chaos, hate, and greed. If were honest we see this in our own lives. We wonder why things are so bad, we wonder why no matter how hard we try we seem to just make a good mess of our lives.....
All because we will not submit to the One who can bless us once again. Chaos, strife and trouble is 90% of the time the fruit of wanting to be the only authority over our own lives refusing to submit to the authority Jesus Christ. We can not like it, but we are in need of a good and proper authority. These men felt as though Jesus could be this authority.
JESUS IS LORD OF THE SCRIPTURES The Bible even tells us He is the very WORD OF GOD!
But not only is Jesus Lord of the Scriptures

Jesus is Lord Over Satan’s Servants

Mark 1:23
Mark 1:23 ESV
And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out,
Mark 1:24-27
Mark 1:24–28 ESV
“What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him. And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.
So Jesus’ teaching has already drawn out an astonishment out of the people but theres something else about to be drawn out right. Theres an evil spirit who has some level of authority over this man and all of his faculties. Yet this is what the gospel does as you read it it seems to pull out, and draw out. The same way hot water and salt pulls out infection, can you imagine this man who has been possessed by this demon, and has sat in this synagogue many times more than likely and yet has never cried out. But now standing here listening to the KING OF HEAVEN HE CRIES OUT!
A true authority has come to unshackle the shackles from the people, the enemy despises and he begins to speak out, this is why we say you MUST BE IN THE WORD BECAUSE THE WORD POINTS TO JESUS WHO IS THE GOSPEL AND THE GOSPEL WILL PULL THINGS OUT OF YOUR HEART THAT YOU DID NOT EVEN KNOW EXISTED. This is how you recognize sin in your life, and this is where deliverance is found in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ! Some of you in this room right now have strongholds in your life, that you may not even know they are there. There are trenches where the enemy has gained ground in your heart and is seeking to destroy you and you have sat in services right here with us and nothing has ever changed BUT THERE IS A SAVIOR AND HIS NAME IS JESUS AND AT THE NAME OF JESUS DEMONS FLEE, AT THE NAME OF JESUS DARKNESS MAKES WAY FOR LIGHT, IF YOU WILL LAY YOUR LIFE AT HIS FEET AND SUBMIT TO HIS LORDSHIP OVER YOUR LIFE.... YOU MIGHT COME TO CHURCH CHAINED BUT YOU CAN LEAVE HERE RUNNING FREE!
So we see what the gospel is doing drawing out this evil spirit. This evil spirit speak to Jesus and he is trying to speak in such a way where he is interrupting Him preaching the gospel, at the same time he doesn’t want to submit to true authority.
He says to Jesus I KNOW WHO YOU ARE, DON’T DESTROY ME, I KNOW WHO YOU ARE....
Almost as if he is trying to get in His good graces. Jesus responds with a deep theological response.... SHUT UP!
lol no BE SILENT! They mean BE MUZZLED
Meaning Jesus said to the demon: who told you that you were allowed to speak?
You shut your mouth and come out of him right now!
This is something right here! Jesus used the scriptures to fight back against the devil in the wilderness, but Satans servants this demon.... this is a cake walk for the Son of God! heres a very real thing that matters to us. The Bible tells us that we fight not against flesh and blood but against rulers principalities DEMONS.
These demons have strongholds in your life right now and they take on the form of anger, bitterness, resentment, aggravation, judgmental attitudes, self righteousness, lying, depression, marital issues, addiction. BUT HERES WHAT GOD WANTS YOU TO UNDERSTAND THIS MORNING, THE SON OF GOD DWELLS WITHIN YOU THERE IS NO ROOM FOR HIM HERE WHEN YOU AND I SUBMIT TO HIS LORDSHIP JESUS CAN SILENCE THESE FOOLS ONCE AND FOR ALL!
So now there is tangible fruit from Jesus’ ministry, people aint just listening to sermons here is a demon possesed man being freed, now JEsus shows us that He is LORD OVER BOTH GOOD AND EVIL.
Its one thing to say ok your an authority over good things, but to say that he is the authority over evil things is a whole other deal. In the way that most of us live and I am with you on this, were all together here so im with ya. with the way we live out our lives we are poor stewards this truth. When things go good "praise you God, Lord you are good, you are in authority, you are in control, You are Soverign, YOU ARE GOOD! You are Jehovah Jirah your my provider and we will slap that on a bumper sticker and we will say AMEN!
But then things fall apart and we respond: “Where are you?”
You ever read the schizophrenic David in Psalms
“I see your goodness” then it says Selah meaning something happened
“No I Don’t” Selah
I found it, Youre great” Selah
“I take it back...”
That’s just the psalms thats our life, so we love to proclaim His goodness when things are good, btu we are quick to judge His character, and call his character into question and raise our standard for who we are when things do not go like we think they should. The proper response of a follower of JEsus Christ is to proclaim His goodness over all things!
Listen Jesus is Lord when things are good and He is certainly Lord when things are bad, HE IS LORD AND WORKS ALL THINGS TOGETHER FOR THE GOOD OF THOSE WHO LOVE HIM AND ARE THE CALLED ACCORDING TO THIS PURPOSES!
At weddings everyone is smiling! NOBODY NOTICES A CHRISTIAN SMILING AT A WEDDING, EVERYONE IS SMILING AT A WEDDING!
What about a funeral, nobody wants to talk about this but I can assure you that EVERYONE NOTICES HOW CHRISTIANS DEAL WITH LOSS, when Christians deal with loss the Christian lives and reponds differently. They say I am wounded, I am hurt deep, I dont understand, BUT YOU ARE GOOD YOUR CHARACTER IS PROPER, YOUR AUTHORITY IS GOOD AND I TRUST YOU AND I WILL SMILE BECAUSE I KNOW YOU HOLD GOOD AND EVIL IN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND AND NOTHING TRUMPS YOU!
IT’s hard for us to understand this though.
But we must trust in the soveringty
