Important Feasts

There are three important feasts in Jewish calendar
Passover, Pentecost and Tabernacles
Passover occured during the feast of unleavened bread
Week long celebration during month of Nisan
During the feast came the passover meal
At the time of this era, under Roman rule, there was strong political overtones and Rome was always concerned about an uprising at the time for it would be an opportune time for the Messiah to show up. Hence why King Herod, Pontius Pilate were in Jerusalem instead of Tiberius and Caesarea respectively. They wanted to ensure peace.
The Passover is found in all four of the gospels, but each has a different emphasis on it. Luke emphasis the time of the passover.
It was estimated that 1.2m people where in Jerusalem for the feast that celebrated the deliverance from bondage to Egypt.
We need to remember that Jesus had set His face to Jerusalem (Lk9:51)
Luke 9:51 NASB95
51 When the days were approaching for His ascension, He was determined to go to Jerusalem;
Jesus was following the predetermined plan of the Father and would arrive in Jerusalem at passover so to be the passover lamb.
In looking at this passage there 3 breaks.
The Set up (vv.1-2)
The sell out (vv.3-6)
The preparation (vv.7-13)

What do you see, what do you notice, what sticks out to you?

OK, first question who was looking to do what to who (v.2)?
OK, first question who was looking to do what to who (v.2)?
They had made their appearance previously (Lk19:47; 20:19) and will be seen more throughout what is known as the “Passion Narrative”
Luke 19:47 NASB95
47 And He was teaching daily in the temple; but the chief priests and the scribes and the leading men among the people were trying to destroy Him,
and then there is other passage
Luke 20:19 NASB95
19 The scribes and the chief priests tried to lay hands on Him that very hour, and they feared the people; for they understood that He spoke this parable against them.
They wanted to destroy Him (19:47) and they wanted to lay hands on Him (20:19) but they had feared the people.
One of the steps of preparation for the passover was to remove all leaven from your home for leaven represented sin. You would wash, sweep make sure everything was clean before passover.
Jesus had warned His disciples to watch out for the leaven of the Pharisee’s (Lk12:1) that leaven was hypocrisy and now we will see it come into play.
Luke 12:1 NASB95
1 Under these circumstances, after so many thousands of people had gathered together that they were stepping on one another, He began saying to His disciples first of all, “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
They would cleanse homes, clean cups but not hearts (see Mt23:25-28)
Matthew 23:25–26 NASB95
25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence. 26 “You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, so that the outside of it may become clean also.
Matthew 23:27–28 NASB95
27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. 28 “So you, too, outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
Mt
What is the symbolism you see in this passage?
(Transition) - now brings us to the sell out

II. The Sellout

Now we have Satan and Judas coming into the picture there are things we can learn and know from the passage.
Luke 22:3–4 NASB95
3 And Satan entered into Judas who was called Iscariot, belonging to the number of the twelve. 4 And he went away and discussed with the chief priests and officers how he might betray Him to them.
Luke 22:5–6 NASB95
5 They were glad and agreed to give him money. 6 So he consented, and began seeking a good opportunity to betray Him to them apart from the crowd.
What happens in (v.3)?
What is the desire in (v.4)?
What was the agreement (v.5)?
What was intended outcome (v.6)?
Let me start with a few things about Judas here.
He was numbered with the 12, but not a true believer (Jn13:2, 27)
John 13:2 NASB95
2 During supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him,
John 13:27 NASB95
27 After the morsel, Satan then entered into him. Therefore Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.”
He had never been cleansed of his sins (Jn13:10-11)
He had never been cleansed of his sins (Jn13:10-11)
John 13:10–11 NASB95
10 Jesus said to him, “He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you. 11 For He knew the one who was betraying Him; for this reason He said, “Not all of you are clean.”
He never received eternal life (Jn6:64-71)
John 6:64–65 NASB95
64 “But there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who it was that would betray Him. 65 And He was saying, “For this reason I have said to you, that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted him from the Father.”
He never received eternal life (Jn6:64-71)
John 6:66–67 NASB95
66 As a result of this many of His disciples withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore. 67 So Jesus said to the twelve, “You do not want to go away also, do you?”
John 6:68–69 NASB95
68 Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life. 69 “We have believed and have come to know that You are the Holy One of God.”
John 6:70–71 NASB95
70 Jesus answered them, “Did I Myself not choose you, the twelve, and yet one of you is a devil?” 71 Now He meant Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray Him.
Jn6:
Nothing in the scripture that points to any of the other apostles knowing who the traitor was. Traitor among them, that is what Judas was, but he was not isolated either.
Other traitors noted (Jude4)
Jude 4 NASB95
4 For certain persons have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.
It shows how close someone can be to the kingdom, but not in the kingdom (Mt7:21-29)
Matthew 7:21–22 NASB95
21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. 22 “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’
Matthew 7:23–24 NASB95
23 “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’ 24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock.
Matthew 7:25–26 NASB95
25 “And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. 26 “Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.
Matthew 7:27–28 NASB95
27 “The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and great was its fall.” 28 When Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were amazed at His teaching;
Matthew 7:29 NASB95
29 for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.
Mt7:27-28
So, close to the kingdom, but not in the kingdom then came to turn against the kingdom, but why, why did Judas do it?
Money played a part, and we know he was a thief (Jn12:4-6)
John 12:4–6 NASB95
4 But Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples, who was intending to betray Him, said, 5 “Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and given to poor people? 6 Now he said this, not because he was concerned about the poor, but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box, he used to pilfer what was put into it.
(this is not not o
1 Corinthians 5:6–7 NASB95
6 Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough? 7 Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed.
1 Corinthians 5:8 NASB95
8 Therefore let us celebrate the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
1COr5:8
Here is that leaven again, we need to be careful
One more thought before moving on, Satan had left Jesus until a more opportune time (LK4:13)
Luke 4:13 NASB95
13 When the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time.
Now was the time, his demons had been at work, we know that, but now Satan enters Judas, and plays his part in God’s grand plan to save sinful man. Money and Satan both played a part in the betrayal by Judas, but God orchestrated the events. Look at how it ended for him (Act1:18)
Acts 1:18 NASB95
18 (Now this man acquired a field with the price of his wickedness, and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his intestines gushed out.

III. The Preparation

Luke 22:7–8 NASB95
7 Then came the first day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8 And Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, so that we may eat it.”
Luke 22:9–10 NASB95
9 They said to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare it?” 10 And He said to them, “When you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house that he enters.
Luke 22:9–10 NASB95
9 They said to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare it?” 10 And He said to them, “When you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house that he enters.
Luke 22:11–12 NASB95
11 “And you shall say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’ 12 “And he will show you a large, furnished upper room; prepare it there.”
Luke 22:11–12 NASB95
11 “And you shall say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’ 12 “And he will show you a large, furnished upper room; prepare it there.”
Luke 22:13 NASB95
13 And they left and found everything just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.
Lk22:11-12
Luke 22:13 NASB95
13 And they left and found everything just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.
Lk22:13
God had a grand plan, God did not tell the plan to everyone, but wanted Peter and John to trust Him at His word and to obey Him.
God had a grand plan, God did not tell the plan to everyone, but wanted James and John to trust Him at His word and to obey Him.
What did Jesus tell them to do (v.8)?
By their reply in (v.9) we know they trusted Him and were just asking directions on where to go.
Notice the out of the ordinary (v.10)
In verses 11-12 we see the proof of Jesus previously, without their knowledge, arranging. The end result (v.13)
What was the end result (v.13)?
I want to go on and dig a little deeper into this, but with this thought first. (v.13) we see everything was just as Jesus said it. It was that way then, it is that way now. If Jesus said it, that settles it, it is!

IV. Digging Deeper

First the preparation day - 14th day of Nisan
This is the day the lamb was taken to the temple to be sacrificed then taken back to be roasted and eaten the next day. The Jewish days ran from sunset to sunset so the feast of unleavened bread, and the passover would really be on 15th day of Nisan.
The passover meal had to be eaten within the city walls of Jerusalem, hence why Jesus arranged for the passover meal to be with His disciples just inside the city walls.
Matthew 22:10 NASB95
10 “Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered together all they found, both evil and good; and the wedding hall was filled with dinner guests.
Luke 22:10 NASB95
10 And He said to them, “When you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house that he enters.
Jewish vs. Roman viewpoints, calendar (Jn18:28, 19:14; Gen1:5, 8:22)
As I just mentioned the Jewish way of looking at days was from evening to evening. (Gen1:5)
Genesis 1:5 NASB95
5 God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.
There seems to be some controversy with some thinking there is a contradiction in (Jn18:28)
John 18:28 NASB95
28 Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas into the Praetorium, and it was early; and they themselves did not enter into the Praetorium so that they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.
Jewish leaders had not had the passover when Jesus was tried and condemned, but Jesus had the passover with His disciples, so how do we reconcile this?
I mentioned the Jewish mindset as seen in Gen1:3, but there was another one too (see Gen8:22)
Genesis 8:22 NASB95
22 “While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, And cold and heat, And summer and winter, And day and night Shall not cease.”
One way that was adopted by the majority of the Jewish people, the other from Day to Night was a Roman view that was from Day to night
So it seems Matthew, Mark and Luke used the Jewish reckoning (from night to day) and John adopted the Romana view (from day to night). there would be overlapping of times that permitted both to celebrate on the same date, but a different day (this is from Harmony of Gospels by Harper and Row).
Temple priests would accept sacrifices on the earlier or the later time. Seems the Jewish leaders mentioned in Jn18:28 followed the Roman mindset where Jesus and His disciples followed the Jewish form.
Our Lord was the sacrifice that was offered on passover at the time when the evening offering would be slain!
I found this all very interesting and thought you might enjoy us unpacking this some.
