Introduction
We live in a world filled with racial tension
In the United States, much progress has been made but we still have a ways to go.
Since the 13th amendment was made law in 1865 and slavery was outlawed, there has been slow progress.
Five years later, African American Men were given the right to vote
It wasn’t until 1924 that American Indians were given that right
In 1948, the US military was desegregated and in 1954, “Separate but equal” was overturned
From that time through 1970 is the era we commonly call the civil rights era.
then to today...
1963 “I have a dream”
Exposition
Matthew 15:21 ESV
And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon.
Jesus left the area of Galilee and Israel all together
Look at this map
Judea and Galilee
Look at this second map
(Show area of meeting)
Matthew 15:22 ESV
And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.”
So Jesus did not actually enter Tyre or Sidon but went to the boarder area
This woman somehow heard of Jesus and knew that he was outside the area but close enough to catch him.
It says she is a “Canaanite”
remember...
Genesis 9:25 ESV
he said, “Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be to his brothers.”
Matthew 15:22 ESV
And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.”
She cries or yells
Her request is for healing of her daughter
demon possesion
Matthew 15:23 ESV
But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying out after us.”
Jesus response is silence
seems harsh
expected, even better than expected
Disciples response is more than it seems.
They basically ask Jesus to grant her request so she will go away
We know this because of vs. 24...
Matthew 15:24 ESV
He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”
Jesus answers his disciples, not the Canaanite woman
He makes a provocative statement
“I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”
Jesus is emphasizing his mission
In chapter 8, Jesus healed Gentiles but in a Jewish setting
This will not further his mission
Remember, God is sovereign so 2 things
It was always God’s plan to heal this girl
Jesus mission is, in an earthly sense, to Israel, but in an eternal sense, to the whole world
Remember God’s covenant with Abraham was that all the nation’s would be blessed through Jesus
Matthew 15:25 ESV
But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.”
Saying here that she “came” basically means that she was calling out from a distance earlier but now had caught up.
She asks for help now to His face.
Matthew 15:26 ESV
And he answered, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”
Sounds harsh
Lets dig in a little
dogs - greek word only used here
pets rather than street or scavenging dogs
Mishnah makes clear that Jews did keep dogs as pets
Basically, in a house there is a priority given to children over pets.
Jesus is using a brief parable rather than calling Canaanites dogs.

I. Jesus' mission to save the world had a focus on one people group so that our mission could focus on all peoples.

Matthew 15:27 ESV
She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.”
Matthew 15:28 ESV
Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly.

II. Faith is required rather than birthright to be one of God’s chosen.

Applications
Jesus was Jewish and came to Jews but His mission was to save a people from every tribe and nation
Matthew 24:14
Matthew 24:14 ESV
And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
Luke 24:47
Luke 24:47 ESV
and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
Revelation 5:9
Revelation 5:9 ESV
And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation,
Galatians 3:8
Galatians 3:8 ESV
And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.”
Next Point
Matthew 15:29 ESV
Jesus went on from there and walked beside the Sea of Galilee. And he went up on the mountain and sat down there.
Matthew 15:30 ESV
And great crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and they put them at his feet, and he healed them,
Matthew 15:31 ESV
so that the crowd wondered, when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled healthy, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they glorified the God of Israel.

III. The proper response to Jesus’ work is to glorify God.
