3. The Holy Spirit in the New Testament
A. John the Baptist and the Holy Spirit (Luke 3:15-17)
Now as the people were in expectation, and all reasoned in their hearts about John, whether he was the Christ or not, John answered, saying to all, “I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather the wheat into His barn; but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire.”
JB preparing the way for the coming messiah.
I baptize you with water, but He will baptize with HS and fire

B. Jesus and the Holy Spirit
1.) His incarnation (Luke 1:35; Matt. 1:18-20)
The incarnation of the son of God was a miracle wrought by the HS Eternally existent son of God becomes the God man.
And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
2.) His ministry
a.) His baptism (Matt. 3:13-17; Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:21-22; John 1:29-34)
Beginning with Jesus’ baptism
The father is speaking words of commendation
HS ascends on Son
Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. And John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?”
But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him.
When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
It came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And immediately, coming up from the water, He saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove. Then a voice came from heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.’ I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.”
And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”
b.) His temptations (Matt. 4:1-11; Mark 1:12-13; Luke 4:1-13)
HS lead Jesus into wilderness to be tempted by Satan
Mark – HS compelled/drove Jesus into wilderness
Immediately the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness. And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to Him.
Why?
To ready/prepare Jesus for the increasingly difficult tasks ahead of Him.
It was all going to get worse/stronger
These temptations weren’t only in the desert
Think about the Garden of Gethsemane
How was Jesus ready for the ultimate sacrifice?
He was prepared by the HS for that moment
c.) His power (Luke 4:14-21; Matt. 12:22-29)
Throughout His entire ministry
Discipleship
Preaching
Teaching
Confronted Critics
Exorcised Demons
HS anointed Him - Luke 4:14-21
By the HS Jesus cast out demons, therefore God’s kingdom is upon you - Matt. 12:22-29
d.) The anticipation (John 7:37-39; John 14:17; Luke 24:44-49; Acts 1:4-5)
a. There is also a theme of anticipation/expectation
Jesus continues and heightens OT expectation fresh new unprecedented outpouring of HS
Last day of the feast – rivers of living water will flow
On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.
He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”
But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
Jesus promises to send the HS to his disciples (with you now, but will be IN you later – more intimate
the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.
Jesus commands disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the promise of the father. This will continue not many days from now.
Then He said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.”
And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.
Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day,
and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
And you are witnesses of these things.
“Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”
And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me;
for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
Continues and heightens – just around the corner!!!
3. ) His teachings (John 14-16)
a.) He taught about His person
Jesus was the first comforter
HS will take Jesus’ place
HS is the spirit of truth
HS is associated with the word of God (Thy word is truth)
HS proceeds from the F and S (submissive and obedient)
b.) He taught about His work (John 16:7-11)
HS would teach disciples all things
HS would bring to remembrance all things that Jesus taught
HS would bear witness of Jesus
HS glorifies Jesus Christ
Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.
And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
of sin, because they do not believe in Me;
of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more;
of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
The HS will convict the world of 3 things
Convict – prove people to be in wrong
Underscore one’s guiltiness
To convince of error
Conviction is always in connection to something wrong, evil, sinful
The world – people who are hostile toward God
1. HS convicts of the sin of unbelief
a. John is the Gospel of Belief (20:31 – Purpose)
but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.
b. John 3:18
“He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
2. HS convicts the world of their self-righteousness
a. Their futility to come to God in self
b. Jews based righteousness on their frequenting the temple
c. Also on following the law of Moses
d. Keeping the Sabbath and its regulations
i. One task of Jesus during His earthly ministry is that He was the light exposing the worlds darkness.
ii. The HS would take over this task
3. HS convicts of false, worldly judgement
a. The world judges by mere appearance (John 7:24)
Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”
b. By a fleshly carnal judgement (John 8:15)
You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one.
i. Jesus’ judgement is true
Because the ruler of the world is (False judgement is of the devil) John 8:44 – He is a liar and the father of lies.
Satan is already judged by the cross – so to is his false judgement and those who follow him.
c.) Being Born Again (John 3:3-8; Ezekiel 36:25-27)
Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’
The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
Water and the spirit
Water – not amniotic fluid
Not about water baptism (anachronistic reading)
Referring to the prophecy of (Ezekiel 36:25-27)
Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols.
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.
Picking up on imagery – sprinkling to cleanse from sin
Together with the outpouring of the HS
“Cleansing us from sin and giving us a new nature”
4. Pentecost and the descent of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1-21, 33)
A. The beginning of the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies, the words of John the Baptist, and Jesus’ own promises (with now, soon within).
B. Inauguration of the New Covenant
Inauguration of the New Covenant – and the birthday of the church – God sets aside how He dealt with them - built in obsolescence
C. Accompanied by tangible miraculous signs.
o Wind, fire, speaking in tongues, (120 disciples)
o They found themselves having been baptized or filled or pervaded with the HS
o This blessing of the promise of the HS resulted in:
§ Jesus’ disciples received dynamic power for ministry
§ Boldness to preach the Gospel
§ Courage to face persecution
§ Dedication for Holy living
§ Spiritual gifts to serve Christ
§ Love for one another
· Every believer since Pentecost is given the same blessing of the HS
· But the specific experiences do not necessarily accompany that blessing
o Because it was unique and never repeated
o It came at a particular time and place of outworking of God’s plan of salvation
o Marks the demise of the Old Covenant and the inauguration of the New
5. Differences between the old covenant and new covenant experiences of the Holy Spirit
A. Permanent presence vs. withdrawable anointing
In the NC, we experience the permanent presence of the HS rather than the anointing that could be withdrawn for persistent or heinous sin. We don’t need to pray like David did!
B. Poured out on all believers vs. select group
The HS is poured out on all believers, instead of just a select group leaders.
C. Jew/Gentile alike vs. Jew only
The HS is for Jews and Gentiles alike. Irrespective of their religious background. OC – Jews only, except proselytes
D. More extensive and intensive, yet still not complete
Our experience is more extensive (young, old, slave, free) and intensive.
Our experience now pales in comparison with what will come in the age to come.
Because now we have salvation in part
God’s Blessing – in part
Now we have the power over sin in part
The work of the HS
Then we will have salvation in its fullness
God’s blessing
Power over sin – in its fullness
Work of the HS
Take away for the week.
The enabling of God is given to all those who believe in Jesus. If you are in Christ, the Holy Spirit is in you - to help comfort, to help guide.
Live in obedience to God’s leading this week - He won’t steer you wrong!
