Introduction:

One pastor writes this about this text-
“Its not the hearing, but the doing that brings the Blessing. Too many Christians mark their bibles, but their bibles never mark them. We need to ask God to prepare our hearts before we get here.”
I. Doers v. 22
A. Duty v. 22a
We talked last week about being a doer of the word of God, being a doer of the word of God means that you are a doer of the will of God.
Matthew 7:21 KJV 1900
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Obedience to the will of God comes first!!!
what is Gods will?
The Bible says this in
2 peter
2 Peter 3:9 KJV 1900
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Matthew 28:18–20 KJV 1900
And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Our Duty is to Bring the word of life to a dying family, community, world
B. Deception
Akin to the word for Satan, here it speaks of deceiving oneself, hearing only brings about a temporary conviction, it doesn’t last.
II
II. Hearer the Word
Do not harden your will
contrasting difference:
difference in holding a prescription and taking the medicine
difference in reading a menu and eating a meal
difference in reading the bible and growing in grace
III. Glancers v. 23b-24
A. He looks in the Word
“Beholding” speaks of a casual glance; a “Gaze”
B. He like his own ways 24a-b.
He looks to compare and he might see something out of place, and he might see something wrong or something that needs changing but because he is just a hearer it doesnt take long to forget.
remember its not how much of the Word we know, but how much we obey!!! obedience means action, when you see something wrong in the mirror you correct it.
Hebrews 12:2 KJV 1900
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrew
1. Examination. if we look deeply it may be unforgettable, We need conviction!!!!!
2. Restoration
John 15:3 KJV 1900
Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
john
3. Transformation
2 Corinthians 3:18 KJV 1900
But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
2 cor.
Three mistakes of a hearer only
1. they glance only, no further thought. shallow, on the surface.
2. forget what they see, speaks of a lack of desire for the will of God
3. fails to obey what the Word tells us.
Conclusion:
Do not deceive yourself
Proverbs 14:12 KJV 1900
There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, But the end thereof are the ways of death.
1. they glance only, no further thought. shallow, on the surface.
2. forget what they see, speaks of a lack of desire for the will of God
3. fails to obey what the Word tells us.
