Introduction
How would you react if a celebrity were to walk in here today?
Depends on who...
Depends on you...
Three reactions
Begin Point 1
I want to give some background
Jesus has just recently raised Lazarus from the dead.
There was a dinner to celebrate
Some had been plotting to kill both Jesus and Lazarus
The next day
Passover (the feast)
“The large crowd” - those who gathered for the feast
Heard Jesus was coming
How did the crowd react?
They took branches of palm trees and cried hosanna
At this time Palm branches had become a symbol of Judea
Hosanna - “Give Salvation Now” or “Save Us Now”
Psalm 118:25
Part of the Hallel (Ps.
113-118) (Sung each morning from the temple choir during the “Feast of the Tabernacle” and with Passover
During the Feast of the Tabernacle every man and boy waved a “lulab” (shoots of willow and myrtle tied with palm) when, the choir got the the “Hosanna” in Psalm 118.
John 12:13
“Hosanna!
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!”
Even this response is from Psalm 118
Psalm 118:26
But instead of the blessing from the house of the Lord, He is proclaimed as “the king of Israel”
From Zechariah 9:9 except where John says “fear not” it says Rejoice greatly
So how did the crowd respond?
The crowd responded by recognizing Jesus as the Savior/King who would bring political freedom.
How do we know this?
Because these same people, Who are shouting “Hosanna, Hosanna!,” in a weeks time, will be shouting “Crucify Him, Crucify Him!”
So how did His disciples respond?
The disciples responded by recognizing that Jesus was the Savior/King who would bring spiritual freedom.
Not at first
eventually
What is this freedom?
How did the Pharisees respond?
The Pharisees saw Jesus as a disruptive political force that the all peoples will follow.
What is John trying to communicate with this story?
Purpose of the book of John
