There are some many voices in our world today. Every voice carries with it a different opinion or belief. It's hard to know which voice holds the truth. Today, as we unpack the conversation between Jesus and Pontius Pilate, we find out that Christ alone holds the voice of truth.

(SLIDE 1) SERIES INTRO 3. (SLIDE 2) MESSAGE INTRO Ø Jesus meets a man who has given up on what truth really is. TEACHING: 4. (SLIDES 3-8) JOHN 18:28-40 5. (SLIDE 9) Who was Pontius Pilate? a) "We do not know where Pontius Pilate was born. One tradition says that he was a member of the Pontii tribe and of Samnite nobility. The Samnites lived in the southern region of Italy. Another tradition states that Pontius Pilate was born in Germany...son of Tyrus, king of Mayence. Reportedly, his father sent him to Rome..." b) "In short, the traditions are in conflict and we do not really know where Pilate was born or his life as a teenager or young adult. Supposedly, his name was changed in Pontus to Pontius Pilate and he was eventually appointed the sixth governor or procurator of Judea by Sejanus, a favorite of the Roman emperor Tiberius." (SLIDE 10) VOICES OF RESPONSIBILITY (VS. 28-37) a) Why are the Jews so cagy about Jesus' offence? (They rejected His voice!) i) Blasphemy's a Jewish problem, not a Roman problem. ii) Kingship moves from a Jewish problem to a Roman problem. b) (SLIDE 11) Why would kingship be of interest to Rome? (Caesar!) i) Jesus might threaten Caesar's ultimate kingship over the empire. ii) In verse 34, Jesus gets personal. (What do you believe Pilate?) iii) (SLIDE 12) In verse 35, Pilate deflects. Ø This is Your faith, not mine! (Who are you trying to convince?) iv) (SLIDE 13) In verse 36-37, they discuss kingship. (Jesus' Kingdom!) 7. (SLIDE 14) VOICES OF SPIRITUALITY (VS. 38) a) Consider the First Century Roman world...a melting pot of beliefs! i) "Pilate was unpopular with the Jewish population because he hung worship images of the emperor throughout Jerusalem and minted coins with the image of pagan symbols." (Jesus' voice is truth!) Ø In verse 38, Pilate gives up. (Frustration? Disbelief? Given up?) APPLICATION: IDEA 8. (SLIDE 16) CANADIAN SPIRITUALITY a) Like Rome, Canada has become a melting pot of beliefs. (All roads...) Ø What about in crisis? o Talladega Nights: "Help me Jesus! Help me Jewish God! Help me Allah! AAAAAHHH! Help me Tom Cruise! Tom Cruise, use your witchcraft on me to get the fire off me!" Ø Christian Unity Service Fail b) Are Canadians frustrated, overwhelmed or have they given up? i) "Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” (18:37) ii) "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me." (10:27) Ø Jesus holds the truth. The question is, will you listen to His voice? CONCLUSION: 9. (SLIDE 17) COMMUNION 10. (SLIDE 18) POST-MESSAGE PRAYER
