I. The King Dies (44-54)

A. The Events of the Cross (45-50)

The King in Darkness (45)

Matthew 27:45 NASB95
Now from the sixth hour darkness fell upon all the land until the ninth hour.
12pm to 3pm
Darkness = judgement
Joel 2:30–31 NASB95
30 “I will display wonders in the sky and on the earth, Blood, fire and columns of smoke. 31 “The sun will be turned into darkness And the moon into blood Before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.

The King Forsaken (46-49)

Matthew 27:46–49 NASB95
About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” And some of those who were standing there, when they heard it, began saying, “This man is calling for Elijah.” Immediately one of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink. But the rest of them said, “Let us see whether Elijah will come to save Him.”
Psalm 22:1 NASB95
1 My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? Far from my deliverance are the words of my groaning.
The Father separated from the Son for the first time in eternity. Jesus became sin for us (without becoming a sinner) and the Father separated Himself from all the sin, of all of us, from all of time through Jesus. No intimate fellowship with Jesus for those 3 hours (3 hours to an eternal being is as 3 million years. it is eternity itself)
The Father placed all the punishment of all the sin of the entire world from Adam to the final baby born during the Millenial kingdom on His Son. Jesus became the scapegoat for our sin. And because of the absolute moral perfection of Jesus Christ, the Father’s wrath against sin was satisfied.
1 John 4:10 NASB95
10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

The King’s Strength (50a)

Matthew 27:50 (NASB95)
And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice,
He was still able to speak loudly. He was still very much alive and had strength to keep on living for a while longer

The King’s Power (50b)

Matthew 27:50 (NASB95)
and yielded up His spirit.
yielded = to send away. An act of Jesus’ will.
John MacArthur — “No man can by his own volition in a moment of time will his own death anymore than he can will his own resurrection. But Jesus did because He has power over death and power of life.”
John 10:18 NASB95
18 “No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father.”

B. The Results of the Cross (51-54)

Access Granted (51)

Matthew 27:51 (NASB95)
And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom...
The veil protected the holiness of God. It separated sinful men from God’s presence. For thousands of years the sacrifices of animals appeased the wrath of God just enough for a year so that God’s wrath didn’t pour out on mankind and kill us all. those animals could never take sin away just cover it temporarily. But the death of Jesus was an infinite payment. Wrath was pour out on Jesus in the darkness.

Wrath Poured Out (51)

Matthew 27:51 (NASB95)
...and the earth shook and the rocks were split.
Nahum 1:6 NASB95
Who can stand before His indignation? Who can endure the burning of His anger? His wrath is poured out like fire And the rocks are broken up by Him.
In Revelation we see the earth shaking again as His final wrath is poured out on all those who reject His Son.
Charles Spurgeon, “The cross is the only place where it is safe for a sinner to attempt to meet his God.”

Hope Displayed (52-53)

Matthew 27:52–53 NASB95
The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they entered the holy city and appeared to many.
Resurrection is coming! Here is a taste…more to follow!

Prayer Answered (54)

Matthew 27:54 NASB95
Now the centurion, and those who were with him keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that were happening, became very frightened and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!”
Centurion = commander of 100 men. Those who were with him = Same men who mocked, beat, dragged, and nailed Jesus.
This soldier saw it and declared that Jesus must be the Son of God, but Jesus declared it too. Not with words, but with action.
Romans 1:4 NASB95
4 who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord,
Jesus prayed for them and the Father answered His prayer immediately after He died!
Luke 23:34 NASB95
34 But Jesus was saying, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves.
Even as they were robbing Him, Jesus was praying for them.
Note: this is a prayer not an absolution. He asked the father to forgive them. But what is necessary for salvation? Saving faith! They needed to repent from their low view of Jesus as a mock king and understand that He was the real thing. This centurion did that! He recognized Jesus as the Son of God and confessed it with his own lips. The prayer of Jesus was effective! When the Son makes a request of the Father it is answered before Jesus is taken down from the cross.

II. The King’s Burial (55-66)

A. Dedication by the Women (55-56)

Matthew 27:55–56 NASB95
55 Many women were there looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee while ministering to Him. 56 Among them was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
Many women. These were the primary source of information in the early church about the death of Jesus. What an honor. Where were the disciples?
Mourning was not allowed for those executed. These women watched and followed in silence out of love for the Lord.

B. Benevolence by Joseph of Arimathea (57-61)

Matthew 27:57–61 (NASB95)
57 When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. 58 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. 59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the entrance of the tomb and went away. 61 And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the grave.
Jewish law did not allow for Hi body to remain on the cross overnight. The Romans would have left the bodies of the crucified on crossed publically until their bodies rotted off.
Mark 15:43 (NASB95)
43 Joseph of Arimathea came, a prominent member of the Council, who himself was waiting for the kingdom of God; and he gathered up courage and went in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus.
Luke 23:50–51 (NASB95)
50 And a man named Joseph, who was a member of the Council, a good and righteous man 51 (he had not consented to their plan and action), a man from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who was waiting for the kingdom of God;
John 19:38–40 (NASB95)
38 After these things Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but a secret one for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate granted permission. So he came and took away His body.
39 Nicodemus, who had first come to Him by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds weight.
40 So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen wrappings with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.
What we learn about Joseph of Arimathea
He was an important man
He was godly (righteous)
He was scared
He was bold
He was rich
Frankincense and myrrh are perhaps best known for their biblical connotations. But this tree sap has been prized across the world for over 6,000 years. These fragrant incense pieces come from the Burseraceae family of trees and are found across the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.
Frankincense is a milky white resin derived from Boswellia trees, which are remarkable for their ability to grow in unforgiving conditions. In fact, these trees have been known to grow out of solid rock. Myrrh, on the other hand, is a reddish resin extracted from Commiphora trees. The process of extracting sap from Boswellia and Commiphora trees is virtually identical. Incisions, or taps, are made in the bark of the tree, which create injury. The trees produce a gummy resin, like a scab, as a protection against the injury. The resin then hardens into teardrop pieces.
at wholesale, a sack of first grade-A Ethiopian frankincense is worth about $430.
Why frankincense and myrrh are so expensive, Andy Ash, Nov 10, 2020, 4:03 AM from https://www.businessinsider.com/why-frankincense-and-myrrh-are-so-expensive-2020-10?op=1
The cost of the tomb can only be guessed, but very expensive and the spices are estimated in our time to be worth about $150,000 - $200,000. — Ben Fike, https://redmountainjournal.com/costly-burial/
Isaiah 53:9 NASB95
9 His grave was assigned with wicked men, Yet He was with a rich man in His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.

C. Distrust by the Leaders (62-66)

Matthew 27:62–66 NASB95
62 Now on the next day, the day after the preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered together with Pilate, 63 and said, “Sir, we remember that when He was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I am to rise again.’ 64 “Therefore, give orders for the grave to be made secure until the third day, otherwise His disciples may come and steal Him away and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last deception will be worse than the first.” 65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard; go, make it as secure as you know how.” 66 And they went and made the grave secure, and along with the guard they set a seal on the stone.
The first deception in the minds of the religious leaders was that Jesus claimed to be the Messiah. The last deception was that He would rise again and it would be worse (from their perspective) than the first.
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Twenty-Five: The King’s Suffering and Death (Matthew 27:27–66)

The disciples had forgotten that Jesus promised to rise from the dead on the third day, but His enemies remembered. Pilate permitted the leaders to set a guard at the tomb. This guard put an official Roman seal on the stone. All of this was of God, for now it was impossible for anyone—friend or foe—to steal the body. Without realizing it, the Jewish leaders and the Roman government joined forces to help prove the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Application: Try to tell a person who doesn’t know about Jesus one detail that sticks with you about the burial of Jesus. If you are in awe of what Jesus did, others will be inspired by faith even if they don’t agree with you. Try it!
