I want to talk to you today about the Name Yeshua! For the last six weeks, we have studied six important names of God.

I want to talk to you today about the Name Yeshua! For the last six weeks, we have studied six important names of God. El Shaddai - His sufficiency overrules your insufficiency. We have said that each of these Names come from intimate moments that God has had with His people over 1,000s of years. These Names help us understand who God is and why we can have confidence in Him.

The Son not only taught divine truth, He represented divine truth in His very presence. To see the Son is to see the Father. Yeshua’s sufficiency brought the dead back to life, His power calmed the seas, His glory went beyond what we imagined, He constantly snatched victory out of the jaws of defeat for the pool, the lame, the marginalized, the sinners and even the elite repentants, he was the real game changer when came to battling principalities and powers and He proved that He’s got this when rose from the dead!

Yeshua is he most unique person in human history—God in the flesh—His Name deserves the highest place. His Name should be our everything. As the earth revolves around the sun, so should our lives revolve around the Name Yeshua, the center of our existence.

When men and women, throughout all ages encountered Yeshua, they encountered the Name that promises promotion (long pause, change slide) through humility.

Humility is one of the se words that has fallen on hard times. It definitely is not one of Merriam’s-Webster’s “trending words” according to Google Trends the word “dinner” is searched 60 to every one instance of humility, the word Lamp 100 to 1. The only word that I could find that was searched less than humility according to Google Trends is Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

Humility does not trend, is not searched because it is not natural to us and I think we get confused about what “humility” means.

Let me explain what I mean. A while back I saw a video post on Social Media where a father wanted to teach his son a lesson in humility. His son was prideful and a bully. One day the father found out his son was bullying another child on the bus. So, he wanted to teach his son a lesson in humility. So he made his son run a mile to school, in his school clothes, wearing his backpack and even do it in the rain with his backpack on. He recorded the whole event, posted it on Facebook and then bragged that this was real parenting. Parenting 101 in humility.

Another Father also had a son who also was bulling a kid. So he decided to spend some time with his son. He proposed that He and his son rebuild his old Atari game consol and then they could play his old games together. The dad knew it required a good degree a work and they would have to do soldering on the mother board to get it to work. When they got to the critical part of soldering the () neither the father or the son knew what to do. Just about then there was a knock at the door, a planned meeting, the dad answered it and to the son’s surprise there stood the kid he had bullied with a soldering iron in hand, “I understand you are pretty good with that the dad said, ‘Do you mind helping us?” He agreed. As the three of them worked together, they laughed, they had fun and at the end of the day, the father taught the son to value the other boy because he was different, to value him and esteem him. That is true humility.

Here is the point: the first dad was humiliating his son, the second father taught his son to see value and worth and to esteem other people as higher than himself. That is humility, to esteem others as worthy, valuable and lovely.

Humility is not just a school yard lesson in right and wrong. Humility is the secret sauce that makes the difference between good and great leaders.

Take, for example, the bestselling book Good to Great. Since 2001, this leadership manual from Jim Collins has become one of the most popular and influential in the business world. I rarely meet a leader who hasn’t read it. The book is driven by this question: Can a good company become a great company, and if so, how? To find the answer, Collins and a team of researchers spent five years studying eleven corporations that had made the leap from being merely good companies to being great ones.

But the second trait these leaders had in common wasn’t something the researchers expected to find: These driven leaders were self-effacing and modest.

They embodied the heart of a great leader, Harry Truman who said

You can accomplish anything in life, provided that you do not mind who gets the credit.

I know many of you in this room would love to go from good to great, from barely making it to crushing it and you want Yeshua to help you get to that next level and He will if you it comes through humility.

Transition: The good news is we are not the first people to struggle with. God knew we were going to struggle with this humility and that is why He has Rabbi Paul address this issue. In (paraphrase vv. 1-2)

Rabbi Paul says let me get right to the point: Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand.

Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead.

THERE was a girl named Maria who had broken up with Jimmy. She told him she simply didn’t want to be with him anymore. Rabbi Paul would say, “Come on, Really! Quit being so selfish, quite being a fake and phony and using people to just promote yourself and your agenda that is not how we get ahead.

Transition: Then Rabbi Paul goes a step forward because he does not want us to think this is just school-yard advice or better pew based ethics. It is like He is saying “Don’t just take my word for it, look at how the Word made Flesh, Yeshua, modeled it.”

Philippians 2:5–8 TLV

Have this attitude in yourselves, which also was in Messiah Yeshua, Who, though existing in the form of God, did not consider being equal to God a thing to be grasped. But He emptied Himself— taking on the form of a slave, becoming the likeness of men and being found in appearance as a man. He humbled Himself— becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

Yeshua first voluntarily humbled himself: Yeshua’s decision to humble Himself and die on the cross took place in a specific context: while He was fully God. Instead of holding on to His “rights and privileges,” He chose a different path. This path is described by Paul in both positive and negative terms. Even though He could have asserted His divine right, He chose instead not to regard equality with God as something to be grasped. On the contrary, He emptied and humbled Himself. The implication is that if Jesus is willing to set aside His own rights in obedience to the Father’s higher purposes, then why can’t we do the same? Why can’t we be like-minded and consider others more important than ourselves?

What Yeshua did is highlighted by the contrast with what He did not do. Paul follows this with two statements about what He did do. Instead of clinging on to His entitlements, He emptied Himself. How? By taking the form of a servant and the likeness of human form. This is where it gets exciting.

Think about it. Nearly every superhero has two qualities. First, they had a human form, like Superman, Batman, or Spiderman. But there was also that thing that made them different. They also had some kind of special power that other humans didn’t have. The same characteristics held true for the villains. They too had a human form and some special power. The thing that separated the good guys from the bad guys was what each did with their powers. The villains used their power for their own selfish ends, while the heroes used theirs to fight for truth and justice, to put others first.

To build up the suspense before the answer, Paul slows things down at the end of 2:7 by nearly repeating his previous statement about Yeshua being in human likeness. We do the same kind of thing before the peak of a story:

The Greek slows down right before 2:8.

What will Yeshua do with all He has? What will He do with all this divine power and authority? He chooses to humble himself instead of asserting himself. He chooses to humble himself to the point of death voluntarily for the sake of others.

We joke about doing things “to death” about being “worked to death” but this is the real deal. He did not just die a normal death but a horrible death: roman crucifixion. I want to say this so clearly to you, God was not humiliating the Messiah to guilt you and I into good behavior.

Yeshua voluntarily gave himself and was willing to do anything to save what the father loved: You.

What was the result of Messiah’s humbleness, his humility? Was it worth all of the pain, suffering, and hardship? Far from being taken advantage of, Messiah is exalted in ways so wonderful that only God could have thought them up.

For this reason God highly exalted Him and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Yeshua every knee should bow, in heaven and on the earth and under the earth, and every tongue profess that Yeshua the Messiah is Lord— to the glory of God the Father.

Rabbi Paul is saying the reason why humility is the secret sauce in the believer’s life is because the Messiah’s life shows us the result of humility.

You see that Greek Word that is rendered in English “exalted” him is the word

ὑπερύψωσεν hoop-air-oo-sew and it is not the word for resurrection it is a word that comes out of the political world, out of the business world, it means something like “promoted.”

Here is the point: When Messiah rose from the grave. The Father said what you just did was amazing. People used to spit at your name, now they will bow to your name. People use to renounce your name now they will profess your name. They use to say that your name was blasphemy now they will say it is to the glory of God. You used to not even have a name tag on the door, now I am placing your Name on the outside of the building, on the Gates of the Kingdom.

He says those who have genuinely encountered Yeshua, have realized that just like Yeshua so it is for us. We need to have Messiah’s attitude if we want get anywhere near his altitude. If you want to go high in life you are going to have to go low first.

At the right time, just like the Messiah, God will exalt you.

1 Peter 5:6 The Message

So be content with who you are, and don’t put on airs. God’s strong hand is on you; he’ll promote you at the right time.

Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, so that He may lift you up at the appropriate time. Cast all your worries on Him, for He cares for you.

Cepha, Shimon Peter, is not just thinking about resurrection and eternal life he is thinking about the every day moments of life. He is saying the same thing as Rabbi Paul.

God will call you to hard moments where humility will not be easy.

Your flesh will jump out in front of you and next thing you know you will be reminding everyone of who great you are, your accolades, your position, station in life.

The devil will fill you with pride by causing you to cure a “small” fault with someone else’s “great fault.”

The world will tell you the best way to get ahead is by throwing people under the bus and making yourself out to be great.

If you will humble yourself at the right time God will promote you.

Be the first to run to the back of the line.

Be the first to let others get ahead in life.

Isn’t that prideful to claim that he was righteous?

No, if you knew this person like I do then you would know he claims no righteousness but

the righteousness that borrows through faith in Messiah

the righteousness that He learns by following His Messiah

the righteousness that He sees as He studies God’s Word

C.S. Lewis said it like this, “Do not imagine that if you meet a really humble man he will be what most people call ‘humble’ nowadays:…who is always telling you that, of course, he is nobody. Probably all you will think about him is that he seemed a cheerful, intelligent chap who took a real interest in what you said to him. If you do dislike him it will be because you feel a little envious of anyone who seems to enjoy life so easily. He will not be thinking about humility: he will not be thinking about himself at all.”

Here is the point: Messiah was exalted because of his humility and the same is true for you. The promotion you are looking for is going to come through your humility. Your willingness to

not assert yourself but humble yourself

not get bitter towards people but want better things for people

not hold grudges but give grace

not be disagreeable but agreeable

not be pouty but a praiser

not use people for your selfish agendas but serve people for God’s agenda

The tale-tale sign of a humble person is not a long-face and hunched shoulders. The opposite the truly humble person is joyful and cheerful. They are happy if God taps them on the shoulder to do something but they are equally happy if God taps someone else on the should. Either way, the humble person cares that God’s purpose has prevailed.

You see a person filled with pride if they don’t get picked, if they don’t get the promotion, if they don’t get recognized they will become ultimately defeated. They will blame God and curse their fellow man.

You see a person filled with humility, humbleness if they don’t get picked, if they don’t get the promotion, if they don’t get recognized they might have momentary sadness but it passes quickly and turns into praise as they begin to say, “I am glad they got picked that is God’s best for them not for me, God’s got something else. I am glad they got that promotion, I know at the right time God will promote me.”

You see that is the mark of the humble person, joy and gladness, and that is the person that God will promote at just the right time.

Transition: Sounds like you are saying humility forces God’s hand?

Isaiah 66:1–2 TLV

Thus says Adonai: “Heaven is My throne, and the earth is My footstool. Where then is the House you would build for Me? Where is the place of My rest? For My hand has made all these things, so all these things came to be,” declares Adonai. “But on this one will I look, one humble and of a contrite spirit, who trembles at My word.”

It does not force His hand but it does attract His gaze!

He leads the humble

He Gives joy to the humble

Proverbs 22:4 TLV

The reward of humility and fear of Adonai is riches, honor and life.

Humility causes you to be highly favored by the Lord.

But then people are going to fake it. You can try to fake it but it will not last long, pride always bubbles up to the top. Furthermore, do you not know that God sees the heart, you can’t fake God out, you can’t phony it up with God.

The only other option to humility is pride.

1 Peter 5:5 TLV

Likewise, you younger ones, submit yourselves to the elders. And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

I think when Peter wrote this he was thinking about a story. A story that was truly funny but also very serious. It was story where two grown men and their momma had an encounter with Yeshua where he opposed them.

Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came with her sons to Yeshua, and she was kneeling down and asking something from Him. “What do you want?” He said to her. She said to Him, “Declare that these two sons of mine might sit, one on Your right and one on Your left, in Your kingdom.” But Yeshua replied, “You don’t know what you’re asking! Are you able to drink the cup I am about to drink?” “We are able,” they say to Him. He said to them, “You shall indeed drink My cup. But to sit on My right and left, this isn’t Mine to grant. But Yeshua called them over and said, “You know that the rulers of the nations lord it over them, and their great ones play the tyrant over them. It shall not be this way among you. I want you to see how Yeshua resists the proud. He does not give them what they want but assures them of what they need.

You want to lead learn to serve

You want get ahead learn to get behind others

You want go to the top first go to the bottom

You want to be blessed first be a blessing

You want abundant life first you have to die to yourself, take up you cross daily and follow Yeshua.

You want people to be nice to you learn to be kind hearted to them.

Do you know what this city would like if everyone of you in this room today adopted this attitude of Messiah and applied it to your wife, your husband, your grandmother or father, your children, your grandchildren, your co-workers, your boss, your enemies.

Do you know what people would say of you

you are a blessing

you are a servant of the Most High God

you are a disciple of Yeshua

you are highly favored of Adonai

Don’t let pride keep you from experiencing the promotion that comes through humility.
