John 5:19–21 NIV
Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it.

Context

Jesus heals on the Sabbath day
The Jewish leaders begin to persecute Jesus for breaking the sabbath
Jesus defends himself by calling God his Father and making himself equal with God
The Jews try to kill Jesus
Jesus answers them by explaining his relationship with his Father. Jesus explanation about his relationship with the Father is his justification for
claiming equality with God the Father
and for doing the things that God the Father does
Jesus (the Jewish heretic) is bringing the Jews to a point of crisis. Either Jesus is a fraud or he is God. His good deeds aren’t just demonstrating the compassion of God. The miracles bring about a crisis in his audience and that crisis brings people to the crux of the matter.
Jesus is God the Son, sent by the Father as the messiah.
Embedded in this process is one specific point that we want to zero in on...
The Father raises the physical dead and gives them life...
This is a Biblical fact
Lazarus
Jesus (All the passages in Acts about God raise him up)
The very fact that God does raise dead people to life gives birth to some implications:
If there is another person equal to God then they to could raise the dead
If God has the power to raise people’s dead bodies then it is likely that he can reverse spiritual death, and relational death
If he can do it, and has done it, and if he is loving and has a plan, then the fear of death can dissipate.
And we see that this is how Jesus uses the facts to build a case. He is stacking logical blocks one on top of another to establish the principle that he is equal with God and doing the work of God.
Here Jesus makes a comparison between the Father and the Son.
He says that the Son gives life
My overall point is this: If we believe as a fact that the Father raised Jesus from the dead then we can develop a series of life changing beliefs that hinge off of that fact.
Look at . This is what Paul did. He said, I believe in the resurrection and thus take unusual risks.
What are some practical implications for us personally that come from the resurrection?
Our spiritual death is not a permanent condition and we can be brought to life if we will believe in Jesus.
Our death is not the end of our story
The circumstances that resemble death (we are stuck) are not too hard for God to reverse
The death that we have in our life from sin can be overcome by the power of God...
In other words, if we are loved by the God who can raise the dead, and he has raised our leader, then we can expect that resurrection power to be put on display in our life.
