Simply put, Worship is responding to all that God is with all that we are
So where do we go from here.
So where do we go from here.
Psalm 103 ESV
Of David. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. The Lord works righteousness and justice for all who are oppressed. He made known his ways to Moses, his acts to the people of Israel. The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. He will not always chide, nor will he keep his anger forever. He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us. As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him. For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust. As for man, his days are like grass; he flourishes like a flower of the field; for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more. But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him, and his righteousness to children’s children, to those who keep his covenant and remember to do his commandments. The Lord has established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all. Bless the Lord, O you his angels, you mighty ones who do his word, obeying the voice of his word! Bless the Lord, all his hosts, his ministers, who do his will! Bless the Lord, all his works, in all places of his dominion. Bless the Lord, O my soul!
What has worship been to you? What is worship to you now?Worship is not a show that we just do here It is our chance to approach the throne of God Don’t take it lightly!
Worship is showing God that he is worthy
What has worship been to you? What is worship to you now?Worship is not a show that we just do here It is our chance to approach the throne of God Don’t take it lightly!
It would be better pronounced as “worth-ship”
Our lives lived out to show God he is worthy!
What is worship not?
Yes it is that simple
Worship is not just music
I love music
It moves me
Music was the focal point of the Psalms
But our worship has to go beyond how good or bad the music is and focus on who the songs are going to
Worship is SO MUCH MORE THAN THAT!
We worship by coming to church
We make time for him because he is worthy
We worship him by serving
We worship him in hearing the word
We worship him by fellowshipping
We worship him by living out our lives in manner worthy of the calling that he has for us
Worship has to become more than just a Sunday morning experience and move into a lifestyle!
Worship is not a feeling
Music is moving
Holy Spirit is found in the key change!
There is something about music that moves our very being
As a worship leader you can manipulate people into worship by hitting those feelings
Our worship has to go deeper than how we feel
Much like we cannot focus on whether the music is good or bad, we cannot let circumstances influence us negatively in worship
What if its a bad morning
Fight with the spouse
WE MUST WORSHIP REGARDLESS OF HOW WE FEEL!
We dedicate time here at Renew to worship in music because it gives us a time to worship corporately and it is important that we do that together.
So why do we worship?
This list is not exhaustive!
I could spend weeks on why we worship but I wanted to point out some of the areas that I think are important!
Worship is a time of rejuvenationPsalm 42Have you ever come to church and just felt tired?Life has got you downMaybe you are just exhaustedThe Psalmist was doneHe describes his soul as panting for GodHe was thirstyWorship is a time for us to renew our spiritsWe have to make it a point to be here even when we don't feel like itWorship gives us a time to rejuvenate!

Worship is a time of rejuvenation

Psalm 42 ESV
To the choirmaster. A Maskil of the Sons of Korah. As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my food day and night, while they say to me all the day long, “Where is your God?” These things I remember, as I pour out my soul: how I would go with the throng and lead them in procession to the house of God with glad shouts and songs of praise, a multitude keeping festival. Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God. My soul is cast down within me; therefore I remember you from the land of Jordan and of Hermon, from Mount Mizar. Deep calls to deep at the roar of your waterfalls; all your breakers and your waves have gone over me. By day the Lord commands his steadfast love, and at night his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life. I say to God, my rock: “Why have you forgotten me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?” As with a deadly wound in my bones, my adversaries taunt me, while they say to me all the day long, “Where is your God?” Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.
Have you ever come to church and just felt tired?
Life has got you down
Maybe you are just exhausted
The Psalmist was done
He describes his soul as panting for God
He was thirsty
Worship is a time for us to renew our spirits
We have to make it a point to be here even when we don't feel like it
Worship gives us a time to rejuvenate!

Worship is a time of repentance

Worship is a time of repentancePsalm 51Worship is a great time to come to God for repentanceThat is why we include communion as a part of our worship service. This gives us a time to bring our sins and ask for forgivenessIf we are responding to God for all that he is then our hearts have no choice but to be led to repentance
Psalm 51 ESV
To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet went to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice. Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, O God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness. O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. Do good to Zion in your good pleasure; build up the walls of Jerusalem; then will you delight in right sacrifices, in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on your altar.
Worship is a great time to come to God for repentance
That is why we include communion as a part of our worship service.
This gives us a time to bring our sins and ask for forgiveness
If we are responding to God for all that he is then our hearts have no choice but to be led to repentance

Worship is a time of restoration

Coming into worship with a repentant heart brings us to restoration
We can be cleansed (through baptism)
In that cleansing it brings restoration
But I love that passage that says restore the joy of my salvation
Remember that feeling when you were first saved?
You may be in here and not felling the greatest about your relationship with Jesus
Worshiping gives you the ability to restore that joy
Worship is a time of rejoicingPsalm 32:11Rejoicing in in who God is, what he has done and what he will do!I love to praise God for what he has done in my lifeI love to lift my hands and just say thank you!God has brought me through so muchHow can I help but praise him?-2Psalm 28:7Psalm 145:3Psalm 71:23I could list so many.We must rejoice in who God is, what he has done and what he will do!

Worship is a time of rejoicing

Psalm 32:11 ESV
Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart!
Rejoicing in who God is, what he has done and what he will do!
I love to praise God for what he has done in my life
I love to lift my hands and just say thank you!
God has brought me through so much
How can I help but praise him?
How can I help but praise him?-2Psalm 28:7Psalm 145:3Psalm 71:23I could list so many.We must rejoice in who God is, what he has done and what he will do!
Psalm 19:1–2 ESV
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.
Psalm 28:7 ESV
The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.
Psalm 145:3 ESV
Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.
Psalm 71:23 ESV
My lips will shout for joy, when I sing praises to you; my soul also, which you have redeemed.
I could list so many.
We must rejoice in who God is, what he has done and what he will do!

Why is this important?

Where do we go from here?

As you notice we did not take communion
We are going to respond to all that God is with all that we are.
As we sing I encourage you to take communion
Remember what God did for us through Jesus
Respond to his sacrifice and love for you!
