Vital Connections

Vital Connections

Christ is the basis of our Judgments

Colossians 2:16–17 NIV
16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.
Judge: to evaluate v. — to form a critical opinion of something (either positive or negative) by examination or scrutiny.
Romans 2:1 (A person condemns self when passing judgment on others).
Romans 14:3 Treating others with contempt - falls under hatred and despise - to utterly disdain v. — to treat (someone) contemptuously as if completely worthless or despicable.
Romans 14:10 We all stand before God’s judgment seat!
1 Corinthians 6:2 We will judge the world
1 Corinthians 6:3 We will judge angels
2 Timothy 4:1 God and Christ will judge the living and the dead

Vital Connections and disqualification

Judge in a way that you are not disqualified

Colossians 2:18 NIV
18 Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind.
Ephesians 4:2 Be completely humble and gentle
Philippians 2:3 Don’t be led by selfish ambition - value others above yourselves

Vital Connection with Christ

Lost Connections with Christ

Colossians 2:19 NIV
19 They have lost connection with the head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.
Lost connection with the head.
Head:
Ephesians 1:22 Christ is appointed head over everything for the church - His fullness fills everything in every way!
Ephesians 4:15 Grow up - become a mature body - Christ is head -supported - growing - building in love - as each part does its work
Colossians 1:18 Christ is head of the church
Colossians 2:10 head over every power

Vital Connections and christian living

Be aware of Elemental Forces

Colossians 2:20–21 NIV
Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules: “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”?
Galatians 4:3 slaves under the elemental spiritual forces of the world.
Ephesians 6:12 Our struggle is against the powers of the dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms
Colossians 2:8 See that no one takes you captive
Colossians 2:22 NIV
These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings.
Rules pertaining to things that are
Destined to perish
Human commands and Teachings
Titus 1:10–16 NIV
For there are many rebellious people, full of meaningless talk and deception, especially those of the circumcision group. They must be silenced, because they are disrupting whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach—and that for the sake of dishonest gain. One of Crete’s own prophets has said it: “Cretans are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons.” This saying is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, so that they will be sound in the faith and will pay no attention to Jewish myths or to the merely human commands of those who reject the truth. To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted. They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.
Rebellious
Meaningless talk
disrupting households
The goal is to be sound in the faith
pay no attention to Jewish myths or human commands
The claim is to know God, but their actions say they deny Him.
Colossians 2:23 NIV
Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.
Simply appearance
Colossians 2:23 Have an appearance of wisdom
self imposed worship
False humility
harsh treatment
lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence
Colossians 2:20 NIV
Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules:
