Going Deeper in God’s Word

Reading God’s Word is a Journey

What:  all staff do a volunteer day together
The Bible is the story of humanity and the God who made us.
This story is told primarily through the lens of Abraham and his descendants, who become the nation of Israel.
Jesus himself is descended from Abraham—and, ultimately, Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s promises to Abraham.
As an extension of God’s calling to Israel, the church—made up of all those who follow Jesus—is commissioned to tell the rest of the world about the power of the living God.
The Bible begins with people and sadly they walk away and God has been pursuing mankind ever since.
Date: May 24
Barry, J. D., Mailhot, J., Bomar, D., Ritzema, E., & Sinclair-Wolcott, C. (Eds.). (2014). DIY Bible Study. Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press.
Go out from your land and from your relatives, and from the house of your father, to the land that I will show you. And I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will make your name great. And you will be a blessing. And I will bless those who bless you, and those who curse you I will curse. And all families of the earth will be blessed in you ().
Time: 9-12
Due to a famine Abraham moves his family to Egypt and as a result they stay there for 100s of years
Centuries later God frees them though Moses in the book of Exodus.
Solomon builds God a temple but quickly loses sight of God himself and the kingdom is split in two. Israel in the North and Judah in the South.
Surely I have seen the misery of my people who are in Egypt, and I have heard their cry of distress because of their oppressors, for I know their sufferings. And I have come down to deliver them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up from this land to a good and wide land, to a land flowing with milk and honey ().
After Moses death Joshua takes over and leads them into the promise land.
Even though God should be their rightful king, the Israelites demand an earthly king, thats when Saul comes on the scene.
Followed by David. David wants to build a temple God God doesn’t allow it and gives this task to Solomon
DIY Bible Study The Bible—The Story Starts Here

This results in a huge mess, as God’s people repeatedly walk away from him. Israel falls to Assyria, and those left alive are exiled. About 135 years later, Judah falls to Babylon and the Jerusalem temple is destroyed; again, those remaining are exiled. (This is recorded in 1 and 2 Kings; the entire narrative is retold in 1 and 2 Chronicles.) After Persia becomes the dominant empire, God’s people return from exile to rebuild the Jerusalem temple and the city itself. (This is recorded in the books of Ezra and Nehemiah.)

During these tumultuous periods, God raises up prophets to boldly speak his truth and call his people back into relationship with him.

The prophets come on the scene in 15 OT books we call the Major Prophets (Isaiah Jeremiah and Ezekiel
Minor Prophets Hosea through Malachi
The book of Daniel also includes prophecy but falls into category called apocalyptic literature.
Israel’s worship is recorded in the Psalms, and other aspects of its culture are reflected in the Bible’s collection of Wisdom literature (including the books of Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs).
We have the 400 years of silence (Inter testimonial Period)
Centuries later following the rise and fall of several empires, Jesus is born
Paralleling the OT accounts of God Jesus dwells among his people but always on the move.
Jesus revolutionizes the teachings

The Word [being Jesus] became flesh and took up residence among us, and we saw his glory, glory as of the one and only from the Father, full of grace and truth ().
But many of God’s people—particularly the religious leaders—believe that Jesus is distorting Israel’s long-standing relationship with God, so they have him crucified.
Believers in Jesus come to be known as the Church and filled with the holy spirit

All of biblical literature is really about humanity’s journey with God—and this powerful story continues today in the lives of God’s people throughout the world

The Bible - The Why and How

We are in the Bibles story whether we realize it or not
We are living between the time of Jesus /ascension and the time he will return.
The Bible show us how God acted in the past, so we can know how to act according to HIS purposes in the present.

Interpreting the Bible is like appreciating Art

It’s like approaching a Monet. At first its blurry but you stand farther badk, and you see the blurr shape into soething beautiful.
The secret of dynamic Bible study is knowing how to ask the right kinds of questions.
One benefit of studying the Bible is that you will begin developing a more inquisitive mind. You will discover exciting insights you’ve overlooked in the past.
Dynamic Bible study involves writing down what you have observed and discovered.
The difference between bible reading and bible study is writing things down.

When you right things down many times it’s a truth you discover or a truth the Holy Spirit helps you discover.

The ultimate goal of dynamic Bible study is application, not just interpretation.

We do not want to settle for understanding alone; we want to apply the biblical principles to our daily living.
Dwight L. Moody, a great evangelist and Christian educator of the late nineteenth century, used to say, “The Bible was not given to increase our knowledge, but to change our lives.”
It was given to change our character and bring it more in alignment with Jesus Christ.
We must “not merely listen to the word,” but we are to “do what it says” ().

It is possible to know the Word of God and not know the God of the Word.”
Dynamic Bible study means that God’s Word must be studied systematically.
If you read for a check mark for the day, you might as well not read at all.
What we need is a systematic, regular plan of study, whether we go through a book, study a word, analyze a person’s character, study a chapter, or choose some other method.”
A serious Bible student follows these same basic steps in approaching the Word of God.
The first step is observing: seeing the basic facts contained in the text under study.
Next comes asking questions: discovering additional facts by more intense observation.

Third is interpreting: analyzing what the text means.
Fourth is correlating what you have discovered with other biblical truths you know; this involves cross-referencing verses and comparing Scripture with Scripture.
The final step is drawing a conclusion: applying to your life in a practical way the truths you have studied.”
In dynamic Bible study you will never exhaust all the benifits in one passage of Scripture.
The psalmist declared, “To all perfection I see a limit; but your commands are boundless” ().

You can dig and dig in Scripture, but you will never touch bottom.
Solomon said, “If you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God” (). But God’s silver lode is inexhaustible and the treasure is boundless.
But God’s silver lode is inexhaustible and the treasure is boundless.
In other words the depth of Gods words is never ending

AND HE GIVES US ACCESS TO IT
“1. The Devotional Method. Select a short portion of your Bible and prayerfully meditate on it until the Holy Spirit shows you a way to apply the truth to your life. Write out a personal application.
DEFINITION
The Devotional Method of Bible Study involves taking a passage of the Bible, large or small, and prayerfully meditating on it until the Holy Spirit shows you a way to apply its truth to your own life in a way that is personal, practical, possible, and provable.
2. The Chapter Summary Method. Read a chapter of a Bible book through at least five times; then write down a summary of the central thoughts you find in it.

Simple Ways to do a Devotion
Pray first
Ask the lord to give you insight and clarity

Block out distratractions seek foregiveness etc
2. Meditation

Read a chapter of a Bible book through at least five times; then write down a summary of the central thoughts you find in it.
Meditation is the key to discovering how to apply Scripture to your life.
Meditation is essentially thought digestion. You take a thought God gives you, put it in your mind, and think on it over and over again.
3. Visualize
Visualize the scene of the narrative in your mind.
Put yourself into the biblical situation and try to picture yourself as an active participant.
Whether you are reading the historical books of the Old Testament, the Gospels, or the book of Acts, imagine yourself in that historical context.
Ask yourself how you would feel if you were involved in that situation. What would you say? What would you do?”
“If you are studying , for example, visualize yourself as being right there with Jesus, the woman at the well, the disciples, and the inhabitants of Sychar. How would you feel if you were the one whom Jesus asked for a drink of water at the well near Sychar? What would your emotions be if you were one of the disciples who witnessed this incident?
Another example of visualization in meditation is to imagine yourself as the apostle Paul in prison writing the letter we know as 2 Timothy. Picture yourself in that Roman jail, condemned to death and awaiting execution, and alone except for Luke. Feel the loneliness Paul must have felt, but also feel the triumph he must have felt as he wrote, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (). When you start visualizing a scene, Scripture comes tremendously alive to you.

The Chapter Summary Method. Read a chapter of a Bible book through at least five times; then write down a summary of the central thoughts you find in it.
Emphasize words in the passage under study.
Read through a verse aloud several times, each time emphasizing a different word, and watch new meanings develop.
For instance, if you are meditating on , you would emphasize the words as follows:

“I can do everything through him who gives me strength.”
“I CAN do everything through him who gives me strength.”
“I can DO everything through him who gives me strength.”
“I can do EVERYTHING through him who gives me strength.”
“I can do everything THROUGH him who gives me strength.”
“I can do everything through HIM who gives me strength.”
“I can do everything through him WHO gives me strength.”

“I can do everything through him who GIVES me strength.”
“I can do everything through him who gives ME strength.”
“I can do everything through him who gives me STRENGTH.”
You will get 10 different meanings from this verse as you go through and emphasize a different word each time.”

Hermeneutics is essential for a valid interpretation of the Bible.
While we allow Gods voice to speak to us from His word, we conclude to insure we hears God’s voice rather than our cultures voice.
To discern Go’s message
to get to the truth we mucs discover precisely wht God intended to communitacate.
