Words that have a powerful effect.

Matthew 4:1–11 AV
Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.
phscoligists have been telling us for many years now how words can have an effect on people.
This isn't a recent occurrence those who can remember the second world war can remember the proper-gander that was spouted out by lord haw haw for the Germans This was to try and defeat the british by undermining there moral.
Word can have an effect on people, tell your child on a regular basis that he is usless and in time he will begin to belive it and act like it.
im not going down the road of power of possitve thinking because that has a load of holes in it.
Proverbs 23:7 AV
For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.
The word of God is simply just that The word of God.
Just medditate on that sentence for a moment.
you can read the words of God that are written for our edification.
2 Timothy 3:16 AV
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
once again i use this saying of mine
inspiration of God and not perspiration of man.
here we are talking about the written word of God
but remember that Jesus was the spoke word of God from the begining of time until the end of time.
But what about the written word do i want us to go home with this morning.
i want us this morning to use the word of God just like Jesus did when satan came to tempt him.
First things first to bring something out you first must put something in.
if today i wanted to cook roast chicken to feed my hungry stomach its no good putting a fish in the oven
for what goes in must come out.
when washing the clothes if i put only my trousers in i would expect to get my trousers out.
If i want to see the word of God come out of my life then its no good putting eastenders in.
that which you put in will come out.
Isaiah 40:8 AV
The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.
the word of God last forever.
In our reading we see how Jesus was lead into the wilderness by the spirit.
the spirit the third person of the trinity the do it guy
God thought it
Jesus spoke it
spirit brought it into being.
whenever you read about the spirit just wait to see what the spirit is going to be about.
there is always a show.
What was going to be the show in our reading.
First thing to note
Matthew 4:1 AV
Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
he was going to be tempted of the devil.
This cast away statement was the essence of this reading.
Jesus was going to be tempted by the devil so how was Jesus the Son of man but also the Son of God going to prepare for this.
Although in our reading at this point we haven't seen how Jesus was going to prepare for this eventuality
In this reading we see there are several ways that Jesus prepared for this action of the devil.
One of which took 40 days and the other took 30 years on earth but because he was the word that was at the begining you could say that he was being prepared form the begining of time.
Matthew 4:2 AV
And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
Jesus had fasted for 40 days and was now hungry this is 4 and a bit weeks
40
Mentioning 146 times in Scripture, the number 40 generally symbolizes a period of testing, trial or probation. During Moses' life he lived forty years in Egypt and forty years in the desert before God selected him to lead his people out of slavery. Moses was also on Mount Sinai for 40 days and nights, on two separate occasions (Exodus 24:18, 34:1 - 28), receiving God's laws. He also sent spies, for forty days, to investigate the land God promised the Israelites as an inheritance (Numbers 13:25, 14:34).
The prophet Jonah powerfully warned ancient Nineveh, for forty days, that its destruction would come because of its many sins. The prophet Ezekiel laid on His right side for 40 days to symbolize Judah's sins (Ezekiel 4:6). Elijah went 40 days without food or water at Mount Horeb. Jesus was tempted by the devil not just three times, but MANY times during the 40 days and nights he fasted just before his ministry began. He also appeared to his disciples and others for 40 days after his resurrection from the dead.
The number forty can also represent a generation of man. Because of their sins after leaving Egypt, God swore that the generation of Israelites who left Egyptian bondage would not enter their inheritance in Canaan (Deuteronomy 1). The children of Israel were punished by wandering the wilderness for 40 years before a new generation was allowed to possess the promised land. Jesus, just days before his crucifixion, prophesied the total destruction of Jerusalem (Matthew 24:1 - 2, Mark 13:1 - 2). Forty years after his crucifixion in 30 A.D., the mighty Roman Empire destroyed the city and burned its beloved temple to the ground.
Here Jesus was prepareing himself for the trial that was to come.
Let us just meditate for a moment that he who was from the begining and new all the History of the world still felt it necessary to fast knowing he was to be tempted by the devil.
I wonder do you fast do you show to God your sincerity and your detemination to follow him.
Fasting will not Change the mind of God but will show to him how sincer you are.
As christians we follow Jesus Christ and we proclaim that he is the only way to God but as a faith we are not noted for our fasting.
This week saw the end of Ramadam and ede was celabrated in the small heath park with thousands of Muslims would gather to pray and celebrate the end of their fasting month.
A muslim said to a christian well you dont fast.
Jesus was asked why do not your dieciples not fast
his reply was
Mark 2:19 AV
And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.
Here jesus is infuring that when the bridegroom is taken away they would fast but do we.
I supose the longest fast that i have done was 21 days i tell you not to boast but to encourage us to do it.
That fast was 21 days without any food but just tea and when i would have eaten i prayed and what a blessing it was for me.
Daniel waited upon God for an answer for his prayer and he fasted till he heard from God and 21 days went by.
waiting upon God and fasting is what Jesus did knowing that he was to be tempted by God
My question to you this morning are you Greater than God if we want to be able to stand against the wiles of the enermy we must learn to do just as Jesus did.
lets pray.
