On today’s episode of the The Things Above Podcast...
Should preachers be preaching politics? And What is happening with my restless heart. This and more on the things above podcast.
Hello everyone. I am glad I was able to get another episode up. It is going to be a busy week for me. Its just one of those weeks. A few things I want to cover today, as always my name is Brandon, Pastor over at Ramsey Baptist church in Montrose Sd.
The first topic, should preachers preach politics in the pulpit? The question is being raised in light of some current events. One is Vice President Mike Pence speaking at the Southern Baptist convention last week, The Other is Attorney General Jeff Sessions citing when it comes to family seperation taking place at the south Border.
None of this is news by the way folks, just something people are deciding to complain about. Separating families at the border has been going on for a long time now. Taking children away is not the punishment itself, its because the children cant be arrested as well.
None of this is good, many familes are looking for refuge they just decide to do it the illeagal way for many different reasons. I wont act like people dont try, perhaps they do and they fail.
I don't care what the situation is, when children are taken away form their parents it is not easy, nice or good. That does not mean it is necessarily wrong. It some case I do feel that bad calls have been made and yes there are times where it can be wrong. I will talk about two cases on this and then speak on my own experience.
Now none of this is good, its not good for a family to feel threatened at their home, try to illeagly find a new home and then are seperated, none of this is good. But it does happen and now people are asking/ demanding/ requesting change.
2 years ago a foster child was taken out of the only home she ever knew, this made news at the time. She was taken because she had native American blood in her and so she can be relocated in Utah with her tribe.
Also, Mike Pence is not the first politician to speak at a christian convention including the SBC. So none of this is news. Just people I guess are more aware. This has prompted more and more ministers to speak on political issues from the pulpit and a major question is asked, should preachers preach about politics or on politics.
It was a nasty political battle where the foster family appealed to the supreme court where no progress was done. A social worker along with law enforcement came and
I have to give a strong no. Why is that? Well I can give a few reasons why but the the biggest is simply preachers must preach the word of God. And there is not a politician great enough or big enough for me to preach about, I can only preach on my God.
I have no room for anyone else. What about political issues? no. No room for that as well. “Well pastor, how can you say that? What about same sex marriage? what about abortion? you wont speak on that?”
Well folks, that is where the problem lies. Far too many people have allowed the world to convince them that these are political issues. They are not political issues, they are biblical issues, and the two are not the same.
The trick is to turn sin into a political position and over time it becomes an agree to disagree stance and eventually, the sinners will have their way with sin. These are not political issues, they are biblical.
Now if you say, I do not have a problem with the pastor talking about a candidate.. well lets just see about that. What if he is preaching against a candidate you like? I bet you wont like it then. But if you are wanting your pastor to talk about a candidate from the pulpit then you are not there to encounter God. You are their for your own entertainment.
I would not have a problem with a politician speaking at a christian event as long as that politician kept it on matters of faith for the reasons stated earlier. We are gathered for God, to speak the things of God. I would actually encourge politicians to speak on matters of faith and not be afraid of the public eye in that regards and that is what Mike Pence should be credited for.
Of course people want to messure Mikes level of holiness based on who surrounds him over his charchter.
Alright, next topic. This one is one christians nee to hear. I have gotten to spend a lot of time with christians over the years. I have met people from every walks of life.
For example, I know christians that would hate my statements on the family seperation at the south border. To them it is a violation of everything christian and some people I know, know the pain of family seperation. Not just by our own government but also by the mexican government, but we just dont mention that part.
I also know christians who would argue that if people cared about their children so much, why did they put their kids through terrible means of travel to try and illeaglly come into a country, a risk that they were fully aware could cause them to be seperated form their children? its a fair question.
In addition they would say of course they want good people from all over the world to become good citizens, but that begins with doing it the legal way.
two christians at different walks of life. I have seen the good the bad and the ugly of ministry and there are pastors out there who have sen the best, the worst and the ugliest. But I think the one thing that bothers me is when I see christians lacking in rest.
No I am not talking about getting more sleep in. And I am not talking christians who are burned out. I am talking the christians lack of rest in Jesus. Now I hesitate to use that languge. The very reason you are a christian is because you have rested in Jesus.
But there seems to be a lack of resting in the sanctified life. The result is a bitter person who perhaps blames all their problems on someone or something else, a person who is never happy or seems to never have any joy.
I am always surprised that christians lack so much joy. Now joy does not mean putting on a smile and laughing all the time. But it is something that keeps you from bitterness.
