The world idolizes and elevates the strongest among us, even if those who are strong are not good. In the turmoil and uncertainty that came with Russia’s transition to a democracy following the Soviet Union’s collapse, an older lady was interviewed by a Russian television station. In the midst of the chaos that accompanied the introduction of freedom to that nation, this woman stated that she wished they could return to the rule of Stalin – “the Man of Steel.” A character trait that no one seeks after is poorness, yet it is precisely the poverty of spirit that is required for anyone to enter the Kingdom of heaven. We invite you to join us this morning as we explore this counterintuitive idea in “A Kingdom for the Poor (Matthew 5:3),” the next sermon in our series “Kingdom Ethics – The Sermon on the Mount.”
