Is It Time To Rest?
Ezra 4:24-5:2
Introduction:
After 70 years in captivity, the Jews, by a decree from Cyrus, king of Persia, were allowed to go back to Jerusalem and rebuild the Temple.
Then because of the influence of two heathen men, Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe, the Jews’ efforts were hindered and eventually halted by successive decree of Darius king of Persia.
Perspective:
The Israelites were without a prophet at this time.
During the 70 year captivity, only Daniel’s prophecies were known yet void of instruction to return to Jerusalem.
The Jews understood that their ability to return was due to the kings decree.
But now the new king, ignorant of his predecessors decree, demanded the halt of the work.
From the Jews’ perspective they had no choice but to wait and see if Darius’ decree could be changed.
Godly Direction:
God waits for no man!
Enter in Haggai and Zechariah.
For the first time in more than 70 years, the Jews have a prophetic command to rebuild the Temple.
Haggai prophecies in the 6th month of the 2nd year of Darius.
Zechariah prophecies in the 8th month of the 2nd year of Darius.
Haggai - Stirs them to rebuild
Zechariah - Prophecies of the True Temple of God fulfilled in Christ.
3:8-10 - Branch, Corner-stone, Vine.
6:12-13 - Branch, Temple.
Present Situation:
I. We are building feebly.
Our lives are more important to us than the church.
We are afraid of every Rehum or Shimshai that comes along.
II.
We only build because of freedom.
If our freedom to build was taken away, what would we do?
III.
We are loosing the battle, and the perspective.
We become so concerned about the esthetics of the physical building and we should as good stewards, but not to the neglect of the gospel ministry!
A. Do we think that God will allow the continuance of this church because of it’s great history?
Seven churches of Asia Minor had great history as well.
B. Do you think that you’re doing all you can for the kingdom of God in this place.
As a member of this local church you’re number one priority is to Christ and the brethren.
God has equipped the local church for the task of winning the lost to Christ and has placed you here for that purpose.
C. In 118 years, how much of this city has been effected by our presence?
Conclusion:
What will the next 10, 20, 50, or 100 years bring?
Only opportunity.
Are you with me brethren?
