I. THE MEANING OF ASSURANCE.

1. It means the believer has security;

- 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me, 29 for my Father has given them to me, and he is more powerful than anyone else. No one can snatch them from the Father’s hand.

2. It means the knowledge of eternal life;

-12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have life. 13 I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life.

3. It means there is knowledge of being God’s child;

-2 Dear friends, we are already God’s children, but he has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is. 3 And all who have this eager expectation will keep themselves pure, just as he is pure.

II. THE NECESSITY OF ASSURANCE.

1. It is necessary to know the forgiveness of sins;

He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you are healed.

2. It is necessary to please God;

3. It is necessary when facing life;

-38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. 39 No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

III. THE MEANS OF ASSURANCE.

1. Assurance comes by the Holy Ghost;

And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption.

All who believe in the Son of God know in their hearts that this testimony is true. Those who don’t believe this are actually calling God a liar because they don’t believe what God has testified about his Son.

2. Assurance comes by believing on the Son;

And anyone who believes in God’s Son has eternal life. Anyone who doesn’t obey the Son will never experience eternal life but remains under God’s angry judgment.”

3. Assurance comes by the Word of God;

“I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life.

IV. THE PERSONS WHO CAN HAVE ASSURANCE.

1. Those who are kings … David;

-4 Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me.

5 You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings. 6 Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.

2. Those who are suffering persecution … Job;

-25“But as for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, and he will stand upon the earth at last. 26 And after my body has decayed, yet in my body I will see God! 27 I will see him for myself. Yes, I will see him with my own eyes. I am overwhelmed at the thought!

3. Those who are believers in Christ … Paul;

That is why I am suffering here in prison. But I am not ashamed of it, for I know the one in whom I trust, and I am sure that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until the day of his return.

V. THE TRAGEDY OF NOT HAVING ASSURANCE.

1. Without assurance there is no peace;

And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.

2. Without assurance there is no blessedness;

- 1 Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sin is put out of sight! 2 Yes, what joy for those whose record the Lord has cleared of guilt, whose lives are lived in complete honesty!

3. Without assurance there can be no true witnessing;

So beginning with this same Scripture, Philip told him the Good News about Jesus.

VI. THE TIME WHEN ASSURANCE COMES.

1. It comes when the gospel is understood;

I want them to be encouraged and knit together by strong ties of love. I want them to have complete confidence that they understand God’s mysterious plan, which is Christ himself.

2. It comes when there is faith;

let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water.

3. It comes when God’s Word is kept;

But those who obey God’s word truly show how completely they love him. That is how we know we are living in him.

VII. THE JOY THAT COMES WITH ASSURANCE.

1. Assurance produces the knowledge of Christ’s presence;

Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

2. Assurance produces the fearlessness of death;

-25 Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. 26 Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?” 27 “Yes, Lord,” she told him. “I have always believed you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who has come into the world from God.”

3. Assurance produces the certainty of the resurrection;

Because I am righteous, I will see you. When I awake, I will see you face to face and be satisfied.
