Introduction

We are still taking about heaven in our Sunday night Bible study.
Now if there is anything we know about heaven it is this, there is a lot to discuss when we think about heaven, what is there, where we are, what is happening, and so forth. But we cannot fail to talk about us.
What about us, we are here, we are alive and well on ole planet earth. But there is a change coming, life will stop as we know it here on earth, we will either face death or if we are blessed, Jesus will return in our lifetime.
So what do you think about death?
People don’t like to talk about death do they… there is something kind of taboo about it… why is that?
Well, I was listening to David Jeremiah the other day talk about death and the here after and I was reading some other commentaries as I studied this passage and I came to think like this.... A great change is coming...
What do people generally say abotu death… we dont like to talk about it
I see a lot of people today for getting make overs, face lifts and body lifts, and so much more, they want to look good as long as we can… but there is nothing any better than living and looking like Jesus
So I am going to look at the passage from .
Now Paul is speaking about the church members at Corinth, and they have asked some questions about life after death, what will happen to the body, can it really be physical or will it be just spiritual. Remember there is a lot of gnosticism out there, some who thought that what ever was to come, what ever was to be, it would be the appearance of what was matter.
1 Corinthians 15:30–40 ESV
30 Why are we in danger every hour? 31 I protest, brothers, by my pride in you, which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die every day! 32 What do I gain if, humanly speaking, I fought with beasts at Ephesus? If the dead are not raised, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.” 33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.” 34 Wake up from your drunken stupor, as is right, and do not go on sinning. For some have no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame. 35 But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they come?” 36 You foolish person! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. 37 And what you sow is not the body that is to be, but a bare kernel, perhaps of wheat or of some other grain. 38 But God gives it a body as he has chosen, and to each kind of seed its own body. 39 For not all flesh is the same, but there is one kind for humans, another for animals, another for birds, and another for fish. 40 There are heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is of one kind, and the glory of the earthly is of another.
1 Corinthians 15:35–37 ESV
35 But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they come?” 36 You foolish person! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. 37 And what you sow is not the body that is to be, but a bare kernel, perhaps of wheat or of some other grain.
So what can we say, what can we tell others when they ask about the after life. Well we can testify about the after life, in one of two ways…
Death will come and then we will enjoy the afterlife...
or ...........
2. Jesus will return for His church and will will be caught up in the air with Him and forever we will be with Jesus in Heaven.
Jesus will return for His church and will will be caught up in the air with Him and forever we will
Now Paul in this passage is speaking about the dead. How are the dead raised? And what kind of body do they have…
This is the question the believers at Corinth are struggling with, they are not sure what to believe and why?
So lets remind us of what has to happen as long as Jesus delays his coming...

1. Death had to come to us...

we find out that Paul rebukes them… Lets go back to our text my friends.
As Paul seeks to answer their questions,we find out that Paul rebukes them… Lets go back to our text my friends.
As Paul seeks to answer their questions, we find out that Paul rebukes them… Lets go back to our text my friends.
1 Corinthians 15:35–36 ESV
35 But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they come?” 36 You foolish person! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies.
Paul rebukes them, Look at what he says, “You foolish person.” You cannot do anything about the resurrection until death comes…
And so he says that sowing will not result in reaping until the seed perishes, until it dies, because only in death can it truly come to life.
1 Corinthians 15:35 ESV
35 But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they come?”
Think about planting seeds, the seeds have to germinate, they have to die before the new growth takes place. a bean seed germinates and then something that looks totally different from the bean seed sprouts and grows and produces beans.
Listen to what Jesus said
John 12:24 ESV
24 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.
This is the very thing that Jesus says here and also he speaks of the resurrection. Jesus will die, be buried and rise again, the resurrection of Jesus bears a great deal of fruit, the most is the fact that his death changed everything for all man kind.
Now think about our lives, if Jesus delays his coming, we know this one truth death might the way we obtain the resurrection. If they is the case, we will return with Jesus and those old dead bodies will be supernaturally changed and we ill enjoy being changed first and to see Jesus upon the return flight.
Don’t be afraid of death, you must die to obtain the resurrection.
Don’t be afraid of death, you must die to obtain the resurrection.
Paul rebukes them, you cannot do anything about the resurrection until you die.
You cannot deny the resurrection, what we cannot explain right now is the means by which we will enjoy the blessing of the resurrection.
John 12:24 ESV
24 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.

2. A Different Kind of Body

1 Corinthians 15:35 ESV
35 But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they come?”
2. a differnt kind of Body
So when you look back at that opening verse, we see that Paul addresses their question of what kind of body will the dead have...
1 Corinthians 15:35 ESV
35 But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they come?”
That is one of the most unique questions a Christian could ask, if they are a Christian they would know that we will have a resurrected body, but if they are being led astray by gnostics and others, people would most likely be taught that they would possibily have a immaterial body, a body that looks good but really isnt real.
But the resurrection we learn about in the Bible speaks to a person having a real, forgiven body… glorified body and we will continue to pursue this thought.
Look at verse 37 and 38 here in the passage of
1 Corinthians 15:37–38 ESV
37 And what you sow is not the body that is to be, but a bare kernel, perhaps of wheat or of some other grain. 38 But God gives it a body as he has chosen, and to each kind of seed its own body.
So consider what is next… Some believe that death is the end, there is nothing more for us to gain or experience, but they will be surprised, for as we looked at , the dead man raised up his eyes in hell, while Lazarus was at peace and in comfort....
But we know there if life after death, the truth is we really do not die, this body ceases if Jesus delays his coming, and we will be in heaven with him.. But when it is time for the resurrection, Paul reminds us in verse 38, every seed will have its body, and it iwll be a body after his choosing.
But our new body will be far different than anything we have every experienced....
We will not have the same type of body that ceased to exist.... if that was the case, the rapture and resurrection would not be anything special.
What is special is that He has given us a new body and I believe it will be in His image just like we were originally desired to be....
And when you walk through the Bible, we find that Paul reminds us of what our new bodies will be like in this time of his coming. So here is 4 thoughts

A. Our new bodies will be indestructible…

Look at verse 42…
what comes after death, we will not return the same.
we will not have the same kind of body that was buried,
A. Our new bodies will be indestructibe
1 Corinthians 15:42 ESV
42 So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable.
Our present body will be far different than our new body, why?
Paul tells us why, If Jesus delays his coming, this body will die, and since it can die, it perishes. It is frail, weak, touched by sin. These bodies are mortal not the immortal.
These bodies are mortal, they will age, that is a hard thing in this life, aging changes us.
We go from strong and perhaps healthy and will grow weak, sickly and eventually death will come.
David Jeremiah says we are going down hill each day.
But the new body will be perfect, never old and never tired. It will be eternal
our present bodies go down hill with each day.
But the new body will be perfect, never old and never tired. It iwll be eternal
Nothing will touch these new bodies infinite, full life...
Jesus said I have come that you might have life and have it to the fullest or abundantly… The fullest expression of life is found in Jesus and will be made real the day we stand in His presence. How wonderful!

B. The Bodies will be Like His, Glorified....

Nothing will touch these new bodies
We will have a transformation from the old to the new. Look with me at verse 49...
We will have a transformation
1 Corinthians 15:49 ESV
49 Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven.
We bear the image of the natural man ( man of the dust) from the dust of the earth we come and to it we will return. But the new man has had a make over....
Look at verse 43
1 Corinthians 15:43 ESV
43 It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power.
Do you see the difference that is on display here, one is weak, sinful, mortal, and the other is glorified, made in His likeness and raised in power.
Consider what Paul says in Philippians 3
:
Philippians 3:20–21 ESV
20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.
1 Corinthians 15:43 ESV
43 It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power.
Do you see the difference, Jesus has been raised in glory, not just he place but the adjective, and so shall we be on the day of His return to the earth. Our lowly bodies will be made like Him...
Glory is the description of his body and we will be made like him. But the day has not come..
Listen to :2
1 John 3:2 ESV
2 Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.
The time has not yet come… But the day WILL come! We will be like Jesus.
What does that mean that we will be like Jesus… Consider what we know about Jesus. Think about Jesus during those 40 days after the resurrection. He has received what was prepared for Him after his death, burial and resurrection.
To kick gnostics in the pants, listen to this first thought

1. Jesus had a real body....

Jesus invited His disciples to touch him.
Luke 24:39 ESV
39 See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.”
1 Corinthians 15:49 ESV
49 Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven.
Jesus reminds then that he doesn’t appear real, he is real. He could be touched, He had mass, weight and volume. Jesus says flesh and bone!
You cannot say that Jesus only had a spirit body… stupid.

2. Jesus shared a meal with others on Two Occasions

While on the road to Emmaus, Jesus was traveling with a few of those who followed Jesus and the 12, he appears to them and they walk along the way. But later that evening after requesting for Jesus ( they didn’t know it was him) they asked him to stay and eat and Jesus did
Listen to Like 24:42-43
Luke 24:42–43 ESV
42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate before them.
Luke
And later Jesus had breakfast with his disciples in
John 21:12–13 ESV
12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish.
Now what do I think about heaven, eating and food.
In the new heaven and the new earth, we see that in that city, there will be 12 trees, that bare 12 types of fruit each month,
Revelation 22:1–2 ESV
1 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
Rev 22:1-
I will share what David Jeremiah says....
He says we don’t have to eat, but we can eat if we desire, but it is purely for pleasure. No calories or anything like it.

3. It is a body we can touch

1 Corinthians 15:49 ESV
49 Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven.
3. It is a body we can touch
Jesus told Thomas that he could touch my body.
we wil be make like him...
John 20:27 ESV
27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.”
You remember Thomas, he doubted. He just couldn’t accept this news unless it was something that he experienced. so to touch him made it real. But what Jesus displayed is that the bodies of his followers will be like His, real,
Luke 24:39 ESV
39 See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.”
We are not having a spirit body we will have a real body, spirit body is a oxymoron
real bodies have mass, they take up space, we can touch and be touched , we could hold the hand of another.
And since it was a real body, that it was Him glorified we know that like Jesus we will be known as we are known.
1 Corinthians 13:12 ESV
12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.
They knew Jesus when they saw him and so it will be with us as well.
They knew Jesus when they saw him and so it will be with us as well.
David Jeremiah said something wonderful .....Just as they knew Jesus before his death, they knew him after the resurrection and they carried that truth to their graves proclaiming the power of the resurrection. We will have the best sort of recognition, like like the disciples knew Moses and Elijah on the mount of transformation,
There is a tree for 12 types a fruit, eating maintains the body but it is a pleasurable experience
Luke 24:42–43 ESV
42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate before them.
John 21:12–13 ESV
12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish.
We will be able to eat with out any bad things happenign… no sickness, no weight gain and so forth. We can eat but not to sustain us…david jeremiah
John 20:27 ESV
27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.”
Our boides will be real bodies, mass and takes up space but they will be perfect. We can touch, we can hold the hand of others,
Jesus had a real body nd so will we...
Jesus in his resurrrection body was real and we will know others as well. Just as they knew Jesus before his death, they knew him after the resurrection and they carried that truth to thier graves proclaiming the power of the resurrection.
1 Corinthians 13:12 ESV
12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.
We will have the best sort of recognition, like like the disciples knew Moses and Elijah on the mount of transformation,
Matthew 8:11 ESV
11 I tell you, many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven,
Jesus knows, loves and remembers and so will be like him

C. Our new bodies will be Incredible…

No more exhaustion, no more limitations, no more lack of anything.
No more exhaustion, no more limitations, no more lackof anything
Wouldn’t it be nice if our bodies never wore out here, if they never had to death with illness, problems, and finally the limitations of life.
But that is just the physical… what about the spiritual???
If we are truly like Jesus, then it makes me wonder is john 20:19 is a reality.
New bodies will be
J
John 20:19 ESV
19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
Jesus came and stood in their midst, it appears that we will not have limitations like we do here on earth, Jesus just stood in their midst… Could we be like this, could we be able to just think and be somewhere else in the Kingdom… well maybe.. not sure about that it fully.
Now just one last thought this evening...

D. Our Bodies will be infinite.

We live and function on a physical plane right now, but what on the day we see Jesus???
Now let me share this passage, so lets look at verse 44, in I Cor 15.
1 Corinthians 15:44 ESV
44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.
We will have a spiritual body, why? well we are spiritual people. So it makes sense that after this life we will have a new body that is infinite
Adam is the image bearer for this body( the physical) , but Christ for what is to come, (the spiritual body).
Now please understand we are not and no one else is speaking about what appears to be, no we are talking about what is really going to happen
We can touch, interact and eat if we so choose.. they are real bodies,
Paul is talking about a real body no longer controlled by physical appetites, but instead controlled by the spiritual appetites.
Look at verse 50, Paul says flesh and blood cannot inherit in the kingdom of God
flesh and blood cannot inheirt in the kingdom of God
1 Corinthians 15:50 ESV
50 I tell you this, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.
Jesus is coming again, dead raised and those alive will be transofrmed
Jesus is coming again, dead raised and those alive will be transofrmed
1 Corinthians 15:51–52 ESV
51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.
We all will be changed, the pattern, the dead first and then those who are alive, testifies to this truth
But no matter what, we will be changed
What do you think ....
