Week 2. Building and keeping relationships.

Intro

had call this week of another pastor that is in an interesting place. As he began to share a bit of his story, he said “I just believe that we’re supposed to be covenant brothers in this season.”
that struck me. there was nothing in me that was agreeing with what he was saying, but it didn’t mean that I didn’t want to forge, pursue, look at possibility of developing a relationship.
Scenario #2: 2 life long friends. When I left for Africa, Gary was one of the ones that if anything happened, I told her to call him. Bernard, I’ve known him since Kindergarten. I’ve never asked Gary or Bernard to be my covenant brother.
The story of D and J is one of the best pictures that I can present of a supernatural quality based relationship. On the outside it can look like one-sided but at the core, it’s mutual. And not just mutual but beautifully mutual.
The Power of Covenant
concept seen at beginning of scripture - God and Abraham Gen 15
We see them through the Bible
God cut covenant with Abraham
Covenant with Noah8
covenant w Israel
the new covenant
Hebrews 12:24 NKJV
24 to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.
It was a serious matter...
It was entered into by way of blood.
The New Manners and Customs of the Bible 34:18 Cutting the Covenant

The two contracting parties killed an animal, cut the body in two, and passed between the parts. Some commentators believe that the design was to symbolize a curse that if the covenant should be broken, the same fate would befall the party who violated it as befell the animal.

App: In the day of FB friends, in a day where friendship is really just another word, that friend may not be the one you are probably in covenant with and likely DON’T need to be!!If you are going to be in covenant
One of the most beautiful relationships is a between a father and a son. It most reflects the Trinity.
It’s interesting that Saul and Jonathan are in the trenches together but Jonathan chooses to cut relationship with an outsider. This really opened my eyes and made my mouth drop.
1 Samuel 13:1–2 NKJV
Saul reigned one year; and when he had reigned two years over Israel, Saul chose for himself three thousand men of Israel. Two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in the mountains of Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin. The rest of the people he sent away, every man to his tent.
1 sm 13:1-
Saul trusted Jonathan enough to give him responsibility…but he still cuts covenant w the fugitive

How it all starts

1 Samuel 18:1–4 NKJV
1 Now when he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. 2 Saul took him that day, and would not let him go home to his father’s house anymore. 3 Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. 4 And Jonathan took off the robe that was on him and gave it to David, with his armor, even to his sword and his bow and his belt.
1 sm 18

The first thing that I notice is that...

It’s a Giving Relationship.

We want to be life giving. The different types of life giving.
We want to be life giving. The different types of life giving.
Picture: A ship. When it comes to the dock, it takes off and puts on. There is no need
We all want to be David…want the anointing, larger purpse but sometimes, God makes us Jonathan. There would not be a David if there had not been a Johnathan.
There would not be a David if there had not been a Johnathan.

It was an Exchange of Something Personal.

1 Samuel 18:4 NKJV
4 And Jonathan took off the robe that was on him and gave it to David, with his armor, even to his sword and his bow and his belt.
1 sm 18
I had to learn this the hard way…you don’t need to be the only one making personal exchanges.
robe-authority. what he was saying is that I bring you under the same covering that covers me.
what did the robe symbolize
App: You can’t build rerationships if you’re not willing to cover me. Better said, the relationship will be limited to the degree of the personal exchange.
we see this even in the life of Jesus. John was the beloved - Peter James and John went up to the mountain of transfiguration

It was Forged in a Season of Shift.

review the story of David and Saul
highlight the difference of allegiance. It wasn’t to his father but to the one that needed him AND wanted him
explore Johnathan’s relationship with Saul

stop looking for everyone to be with you in your hide and seek season
Everyone doesn’t deserve to carry your stuff
You shouldn’t be carrying everybody’s stuff!!!
Just because you’re in the same space doesn’t mean the obvious is the one

It Lasts!!!!

...Stick with you ‘til the End Relationships last to the end of the set season!!!!

1 Samuel 23:16–18 NKJV
16 Then Jonathan, Saul’s son, arose and went to David in the woods and strengthened his hand in God. 17 And he said to him, “Do not fear, for the hand of Saul my father shall not find you. You shall be king over Israel, and I shall be next to you. Even my father Saul knows that.” 18 So the two of them made a covenant before the Lord. And David stayed in the woods, and Jonathan went to his own house.
1 sam 23:
Saul is after David and Jonathan was still covering him.
He’s killed in the heat of the battle i
When you’re looking to build a relationship, here’s a metric no matter you’re Jonathan or David

Symbolism
