There once was a boy who was deeply wounded
He hated everyone and everything
He wanted to get away from the world so he walked into some woods
Little boys can be destructive…I know… I was one
He wanted to destroy something so he thought that he would start a little fire, and mess up a small patch of these woods
A small wind began to blow and the fire burned out of control, and hundreds of acers were burned up in the flame
The boy ran to hide so that he wouldnt get in trouble and never saw the woods again
But something was going on behind the story that this kid could never have seen
He didn’t know that all throughout this wood, there was a fungus called Pito-fthora ramorum or “sudden oak death” that was spreading and would cause all life to die
but the fire killed off all of the trees carrying the fungus
as the ashes seeped into the ground creating carbon, what would have been a completely dead forest a few years after the fire was blossoming with new vibrant green life
Sometimes there’s more going on in the story than we could ever understand by looking at the surface
This was true in the boys life… And it is certainly true in Josephs life
Explain sermon series
Last week we talked about Adam
Explain Joseph’s family tree (Second half of Genesis)

Joseph Betrayed By Family

Joseph’s Dad Jacob loved him more than all the other kids (Joseph 2nd youngest)
Joseph was given a coat of many colors- Color was hard to come by
Josephs brothers hated this
Joseph had a dream
They all had sheafs (piles of grain) and his stood upright, and all the other piles bowed down to him
His brothers hated him even more...
Joseph had a second dream (sun, moon, stars bowing down)
Jacob rebuked him “Shall I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow ourselves down to the ground before you?…But His father kept the saying in mind”
Genesis 37:20–28 ESV
20 Come now, let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits. Then we will say that a fierce animal has devoured him, and we will see what will become of his dreams.” 21 But when Reuben heard it, he rescued him out of their hands, saying, “Let us not take his life.” 22 And Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood; throw him into this pit here in the wilderness, but do not lay a hand on him”—that he might rescue him out of their hand to restore him to his father. 23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe, the robe of many colors that he wore. 24 And they took him and threw him into a pit. The pit was empty; there was no water in it. 25 Then they sat down to eat. And looking up they saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing gum, balm, and myrrh, on their way to carry it down to Egypt. 26 Then Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood? 27 Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him, for he is our brother, our own flesh.” And his brothers listened to him. 28 Then Midianite traders passed by. And they drew Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. They took Joseph to Egypt.
Genesis 37:20-
Joseph’s brothers take his robe of many colors, kill a goat and dip it in the blood to deceive their father
Joseph experienced deep pain due to his family’s betrayal
He shouldn't have been so arrogant
Could you imagine how lonely it would feel to be sold into slavery by your own siblings?
At this point in the story all seems lost, and so do the dreams that Joseph had, there is no way this story could be turned around.
Joseph being betrayed by His brothers

Joseph Falsely Accused

So Joseph is sold… By his own brothers… His father is deceived and it seems like things cant get much worse.
The Lord was with Joseph and he became a successful man
Everything he did succeeded
Joseph became an overseer of Potiphar’s(an officer of pharaoh) house
Potiphar had no concerns about anything accept the food he ate
Joseph was a good lookin dude and Potiphar’s wife noticed she asked him to lie with her… not beating around the bush this one…
Joseph had amazing character, probably only character that could be wrought through unbelievable suffering, and he refused the wife’s advances
Genesis 39:10–21 ESV
10 And as she spoke to Joseph day after day, he would not listen to her, to lie beside her or to be with her. 11 But one day, when he went into the house to do his work and none of the men of the house was there in the house, 12 she caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me.” But he left his garment in her hand and fled and got out of the house. 13 And as soon as she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and had fled out of the house, 14 she called to the men of her household and said to them, “See, he has brought among us a Hebrew to laugh at us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice. 15 And as soon as he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried out, he left his garment beside me and fled and got out of the house.” 16 Then she laid up his garment by her until his master came home, 17 and she told him the same story, saying, “The Hebrew servant, whom you have brought among us, came in to me to laugh at me. 18 But as soon as I lifted up my voice and cried, he left his garment beside me and fled out of the house.” 19 As soon as his master heard the words that his wife spoke to him, “This is the way your servant treated me,” his anger was kindled. 20 And Joseph’s master took him and put him into the prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined, and he was there in prison. 21 But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him steadfast love and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.
Genesis 39:10-
Joseph experiences the pain of his character being slandered, he was following after God and living a life worthy of the calling that he had recieved
This lady used evidence that was left behind because of Josephs desire for holiness as a way to condemn him
Joseph having false witness bore against him by Potiphar wife though he was innocent...Jesus being falsely accused in-front of pilot
In our day and age this happens
You work at a job and refuse to do something unethical and you get fired for being cantankerous
As a Christian teenager, you might have friends that will disassociate with you or significant others because you abstain from pleasures that the world seeks after
As a believer don’t expect your steadfastness to lead to external blessing, sometimes the world will just hate you, and the presence of God will be enough
As christians we actually do have a calling to live worthy lives, that expose darkness and that can really ruffle some feathers
John the Baptist did this and it got him beheaded
Sometimes those with evil intentions hate those of pure heart
At this point in the story all seems lost, and so do the dreams that Joseph had, there is no way this story could be turned around.
Josephs rise to power
So Joseph gets thrown into jail and meats two guys, he interprets their dreams because God empowered him to do so
In jail Joseph meets two guys and interprets their dreams
a cup bearer and a baker (explain what happens to them)
Cup bearer gets out and forgets who Joseph is (Which is insane)
Two years later the Pharaoh of Egypt has a dream about some cows… then he had another dream with the same thing but with corn
Pharoah was distressed and no one could interpret the dream
All of the sudden the cup bearer remembers who Joseph was! Two years...........later
Joseph interprets the dream
7 years of plenty and 7 years of want
Joseph tells pharoah a plan to get them through the famine
Genesis 41:39–42 ESV
39 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has shown you all this, there is none so discerning and wise as you are. 40 You shall be over my house, and all my people shall order themselves as you command. Only as regards the throne will I be greater than you.” 41 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.” 42 Then Pharaoh took his signet ring from his hand and put it on Joseph’s hand, and clothed him in garments of fine linen and put a gold chain about his neck.
Genesis 41:39-42
Finally we see God turning things around for Joseph!
The famine happens
Joseph’s brothers come out for food
And Joseph provides

Joseph’s Rescue For All

Genesis 45:3–8 ESV
3 And Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph! Is my father still alive?” But his brothers could not answer him, for they were dismayed at his presence. 4 So Joseph said to his brothers, “Come near to me, please.” And they came near. And he said, “I am your brother, Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. 5 And now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life. 6 For the famine has been in the land these two years, and there are yet five years in which there will be neither plowing nor harvest. 7 And God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on earth, and to keep alive for you many survivors. 8 So it was not you who sent me here, but God. He has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house and ruler over all the land of Egypt.
Genesis 45:3-8
God fulfilled the dreams that He had given Joseph back in !
Not only is Joseph’s family helped by God’s blessing through Josephs suffering, but God helped all of the surrounding area through the work that Joseph did in Egypt
If you are going through the pits, God is not wasting your suffering, and its never pointless…
(V8)“It was not you who sent me here but God”
Joseph rescuing his family and all of Egypt... Jesus Rescuing His family (James) and all of mankind. "You meant it for evil, God ment it for Good"
God might be taking you through a wilderness to get you to green pastures and still waters
These points of deep pain are the chiseling of the Holy Spirit, shaping you into the image of Christ
God loves you far too much to take you through these seasons and have it be for nothing
A little while later Josephs dad dies, and his brother’s still don’t believe that Joseph is for their good, and this happens...
Genesis 50:18–21 ESV
18 His brothers also came and fell down before him and said, “Behold, we are your servants.” 19 But Joseph said to them, “Do not fear, for am I in the place of God? 20 As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today. 21 So do not fear; I will provide for you and your little ones.” Thus he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.
Genesis 50:18-
What can we learn from Josephs life? ALL THINGS ARE USED BY GOD… WHAT MAN INTENDS FOR EVIL, GOD USES FOR GOOD.

Archetype of God's Sovereignty

God Turns Evil For Good
So what does all this have to do with Jesus? How does Christ’s life compare to this?

Jesus Betrayed By Family

Jesus knows the same sting of rejection that Joseph did
Mark 3:20–21 ESV
20 Then he went home, and the crowd gathered again, so that they could not even eat. 21 And when his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for they were saying, “He is out of his mind.”
Mk 3:
Mark 3:31–35 ESV
31 And his mother and his brothers came, and standing outside they sent to him and called him. 32 And a crowd was sitting around him, and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers are outside, seeking you.” 33 And he answered them, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” 34 And looking about at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 35 For whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother.”
How did Mary forget all that happened at Christ’s birth?!?!
Not only was Jesus betrayed by His family, but also by His followers
Mk 3:
Matthew 26:14–16 ESV
14 Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. 16 And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him.
Matt 26:
Like Joseph, Jesus was placed into the ground because of the betrayal of others

Jesus Falsely Accused

Matthew 27:11–23 ESV
11 Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus said, “You have said so.” 12 But when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he gave no answer. 13 Then Pilate said to him, “Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?” 14 But he gave him no answer, not even to a single charge, so that the governor was greatly amazed. 15 Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the crowd any one prisoner whom they wanted. 16 And they had then a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. 17 So when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” 18 For he knew that it was out of envy that they had delivered him up. 19 Besides, while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today in a dream.” 20 Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. 21 The governor again said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.” 22 Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Let him be crucified!” 23 And he said, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Let him be crucified!”
Mt
This false witness had to happen in order for us to be saved because Jesus...

Jesus Rescue For All

Jesus Rescuing His family (James) and all of mankind.
James went from thinking Jesus was a crazy man to believing that Jesus was the savior of the world!
But how does Jesus rescue us?
Ephesians 2:1–10 ESV
1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
He rescues us by the grace that Christ won for us on the cross! Jesus took on the death that we earned and gave us the free gift of life in Him!
Both Jesus and Joseph show the sovereignty of God in really hard situations… They are both...

Archetype of God's Sovereignty

Peter gives his first sermon, he is addressing the Jews
Acts 2:22–24 ESV
22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— 23 this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 24 God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.
Jesus was delivered according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God
So God knew all of this was going to happen and he planned it from the beginning that we might be saved
In whatever situation you are in, God isn't wasting your suffering, He is using it for good… In some massive way that we may never understand this side of glory.
Romans 8:28 ESV
28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
"You meant it for evil, God ment it for Good" - Both Jesus and Joseph are archetypes of God’s sovereignty over situations that our limited view rarely allows us to see the beauty in the big picture.
Never forget that if you feel utterly lost at this snapshot of your story… God is the miraculous redeemer of the incredibly broken… He worked all things out for good for Joseph, and He is working out all things for good in your life through that one man Jesus Christ.
