Should be Isaiah’s glorious restoration () but because of his rejection it’s going to be Malachi’s devastating judgement ().

Temple was at the heart of Jewish Religion, but Jesus calls the disciples to not have faith in a beautiful building, but in God. God’s still going to provide a temple.

Cursing of the tree only makes sense seen in light of the temple — Temple should bear fruit all the time (Transformation, Mark).

Faith that has it’s object as God, believe that for God, the object of faith, for him nothing is impossible (omnipotence).

The object of faith, being God, is in relation to forgiveness of sin (also temple related).

Faith in God shapes everything, not manipulative or coercive, human-centred planning or priorities. Focus is on God, trusting in God’s wisdom, power, ability, plans. (Transformation, Mark).

Mountains = hinderances (1) temple worship (2) un-forgiveness. are the 2 hinderances that are in the way of fruitfulness. (Transformation, Mark).

New Temple — Christian believers (Holy Spirit)

John & Jesus — intimately linked. John identified Jesus as the LORD. (P.Barnett, Mark,)

True worship of God is seen not in what’s given, but what is kept back.

All of life and death is to be seen in light of God’s powerful presence being with us.

13:1-37 — Ruin and Renewal of the Temple.

central theme is for watchfulness, perseverance, and faithfulness in the face of coming crisis 13:5, 9, 23, 33, 35, 37.

Seeing these kinds of passages as only referring to the future, is to say that they have / means nothing for the those reading it — the bible was written to real people.

13:1-2 — explicitly speaks of destruction of temple

AD 50, emperor Caligula set a statue of himself up in the temple, that brought the brnk of war in Rome. (Barnett, ).

In Israel’s history, desloation was casued by Israels abominations — rejecting Jesus, their LORD and Christ is a grave abomination.

They look to an alternative messiah figure, Antiochus, false messiah, who cause great suffering and violence.

This was written before AD 70, becuase the details are write, but not in order. Note: Editorial comments. Remember, red letter Bibles, use them wisely!

13:14-23 Lit. “they will see...” Not “you will see...”

13:24-27 — (Not Yet/To Happen/cosmic) This is a clear reference to the return of Christ

We would do well to learn the lesson of the signs Jesus has given, his death, resurrection, spirit, his people, and the destruction of the temple — All have come to pass — one waits, his return. (P.Barnett, Mark,)

13:28-31 — (Now/Happened/local) spread of the gospel, persecution, these are the budding leaves of the fig tree, pointing to the destruction of the temple (P.Barnett, Mark,)

The crucial thing here is not to speculate unnecessarily about the specific future events. What is crucial is alertness regarding the essential mission of God, readiness to suffer, and trust in God’s power (See Conflicts in life &heart) (Transformation, Mark).

Double fulfilment

Suggest that Jesus’ prophecy regarding his return on the clouds of heaven, is yet to come. But everything else has been fulfilled.

1-4 Jesus prophecy of temple destruction and disciples question of ‘when?’

Jesus response is interwoven with both concerns,

5-8 warning against deception and false signs

9-13 encouragement to stand firm and spread the gospel

Jesus then offers particular signs of the coming destruction of the temple

14 abomination that causes desolation

14-23 distress & persecution caused / finally leads to the jerusalem/temple destruction

this finally leads to the jerusalem/temple destruction

and

24-27 Jesus’ return
