Illustration: The sick feeling of being pulled over.

Why is he troubled?

Jesus says his that his soul is troubled.
Here when he mentions his soul he is referring to the immaterial part of his being.
At the core of who he is in his humanity is troubled about what is about to happen.
In other words, this is deep struggle. Deep turmoil. Deeply stirred.
This comes from the Greek word ταράσσω, where we get our word for terrified.
Literally means “stirred up from the inside.”
This isn’t sinful anxiousness that we often times are so prone to. This is legitimate trouble.
Imagine for a moment the troubling nature and soul for the unbeliever when they will hear the judgment of God pronounced against them,, when they will learn of their eternal destiny where the holy wrath and fire of God will be poured out on them forever. Now Take that and multiply it a by a number which no man could count.
Jesus is about to absorb every ounce of the wrath of God for His people. Every second of hell I deserved for my sin, Jesus took.
He is troubled because of my trouble. He is troubled because of your trouble. This troubling of His Spirit has everything to do with what we deserve and nothing to do with what he deserved .
This is why he is troubled.
Certainly an understandable thing here that he would be troubled at the reality of the Father’s wrath being brought down on Him, but with this trouble will he back out?
Example: At times in my life, I have backed out of things because I was too anxious about it.
Will Jesus back out? Listen to what he says.
“But what shall I say, Father save me from this hour?”
Jesus highlights what would probably be the natural response for anyone who is troubled about a certain circumstance.
And Jesus had the resources at His disposal to rescue Himself if he wanted.
Matthew 26:53 NASB95
“Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels?
Matthew 26:52–53 NASB95
Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place; for all those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword. “Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels?
Matthew 26
Shall I say : Father save me from this hour, but he immediately answers that with what he knows: For this purpose I have come.
We see this same type of statement in his prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane.
Matthew 26:39 NASB95
And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.”
Matthew 2
This is where Jesus’s absolute obedience meets the terrifying and terrible wrath of God.
He knows the purpose for his coming. He knows what awaits him, and this troubles him.
Again, this should be my burden. I deserve to take God’s wrath for eternity.
And thats why he is troubled, but thats also why he came.
His hour has come, but it is important to understand that Jesus came to this hour. Jesus isn’t here begrudgingly. Jesus is here for the glory He will receive and the salvation he will bring through His death, resurrection, and ascension.
He knows why he came. He is there to submit completely to the plan of the Holy Trinity from eternity past.
Listen to His prayer in verse 28:
John 12:28 NASB95
“Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came out of heaven: “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.”
Here, we see what it motivating the obedience of the Son. He desires that the Father be glorified.
His prayer: Father glorify your name.
How will the Father’s name be glorified?
By the Son accomplishing all that the Father has sent him to accomplish.
So when He prays this the Father responds with a audible voice that is at least heard by Jesus.
This is only the third time in Matthew Mark Luke and John that we read of an audible voice. The times associated with this was the baptism of Jesus, the transfiguration, and now here.
All three important events that reaffirm the Sonship of Christ. Every single one of them exalted Jesus as the one true and living Son of God.
I would be cautious in claiming that you heard an audible voice from God about the small decision in your life (marriage, buying something, your bills getting paid, your personal healing). We aren’t Jesus, and in those things, God is not affirming the Sonship of the one he sent to accomplish his plan for the world.
If you want to hear and understand the Word of God for your life, look at what he said in his word.
Listen to what He says:
I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.
I think we can safely say that the Father is glorifying His own name through the obedience of the Son.
Go the Father has been faithful
So, far Jesus has been absolutely obedient to God the Father’s plan, and he will continue to be glorified so long as the Son is perfect in His obedience.
He has glorified- through his miracles, the sign and wonders and all that Jesus at the point has accomplished.
He will glorify it- in the death of the Son. In the resurrection of the Son. In the ascension of the Son.
Here we see that the Trinity is working together not for different purposes, but the same purposes. they simply have different roles that they accomplish.
So this voice comes and the crowd hear the voice. But what are they going to say?
John 12:29 NASB95
So the crowd of people who stood by and heard it were saying that it had thundered; others were saying, “An angel has spoken to Him.”
Some heard something.
Some thought it was thunder.
Others thought it was an angel.
one group thought it could be explained by something natural.
The other group clearly think this is something miraculous and supernatural (perhaps an angel).
Neither group gets it right.
This isn’t surprising. These people have made it clear time and time again that they have hard hearts toward Jesus.
it was not natural. It was not an angel. It was the Father.
Jesus makes the comment that this voice is not for him for for them.. if they have ears to hear.
The voice is to assure them of everything Jesus has been up unto that point and what he will continue to be.
It is his plan that he would come born of a virgin.
It is his plan, and it has glorified him that Jesus has is absolutely morally perfect.
It is in His plan, and it has glorified Him that Jesus has healed the sick, opened the eyes of the blind.
And it is in His plan, that Jesus would be crucified on a Roman cross. It is His plan that Jesus would be placed in a tomb and according to plan Jesus will rise on third day.
Jesus has and will accomplish EVERYTHING he has set out to accomplish. And all of this pleases the Father.
They have rejected the Words of Christ previously, he knows they will reject this as well.
But why did the voice come?
John 12:30 NASB95
Jesus answered and said, “This voice has not come for My sake, but for your sakes.
The voice is a audible answer to Jesus’s obvious and audible and visible trouble not with obeying the plan of God, but in the pain and struggle associated with obedience.
The Father here reaffirms this to Jesus and His followers of the reason for this hour.
Jesus, upon hearing this voice. The Father is accomplishing His will and will continue to do so: Now he begins to clarify and go into the details of what will occur in just a few more days.
Look here in verse 31:
John 12:31 NASB95
“Now judgment is upon this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.
The hour coming means 4 things and He will outline them here.

Judgment is coming.

Jesus highlights here that Judgment is upon this world.
The world in the book of John is normally and often associated with the evil actions and the evil people that characterize the world and all that is in it.
The world is characterized by its rejection of Jesus Christ.
The world is characterized by sin.
The world is characterized by its nonchalant attitude toward the Son of God
Toward His worship
the world couldn’t care less about the worship of Christ.
Toward HIs kingship
The world couldn’t care less about the realization that Jesus is King.
Toward His purpose.
And here it is important to note the distinction of those who are in Christ and those who are not.
If we are in Christ. if we are Christians, we will be concerned with those things. In fact, those thing will be the things that most concern us.
We need to realize that if we in our sin are against Christ, that as Christ said here, judgment is coming upon the world.
The Pillar New Testament Commentary: The Gospel according to John 4. Gentiles Trigger Jesus’ Announcement of the ‘Hour’ (12:20–36)

As the light of the world, Jesus forces a division between those whose evil deeds are exposed by his brilliance, and those whose deeds prompt them to embrace the light in order to testify that what they have done ‘has been done through God’

There is a division. This is what Jesus has done and will continue to do in His ministry. There is separation.

The ruler of this world will be cast out.

though the cross may seem like a blow to Christ from Satan, we see the words of Genesis come to pass.
Certainly there was a bruising of Christ’s heel in His death.
But Christ only bruised His heel because of the strength of the blow to Satan head to crush Him.
Hebrews 2:14 NASB95
Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,
Jesus coming into the world marks the inauguration of His kingship. He is on His way to cross all the way back in Bethlehem.
But the Kingdom is won, the victory is accomplished at Calvary and in the borrowed tomb.
But how will all this happen?
Look in verses 32-33
John 12:32–33 NASB95
“And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself.” But He was saying this to indicate the kind of death by which He was to die.

Jesus will Die.

Jesus is telling them how He will die.
If I am lifted up.
Jesus will be nailed to a cross stripped naked, and lifted up to hang there. There is where the Father will pour out His wrath on Him.
Perhaps this isn’t what they had in mind by Jesus being lifted up, but this is what Jesus had in mind.
Throughout this passage and throughout the life of Jesus, we see this paradoxical type of thing happen frequently.
Jesus is accomplishing His purposes in ways that to them make no sense.
His death is no different.
Application:
How often do I fail to live in light of that grace and mercy? He went to the cross for me. He was troubled for me.
Hebrews 2:14 NASB95
Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,
He will draw all men to Himself.
Fourthly,
Are we concerned with the the things of Christ or do we more closely identify with the world?

He will draw all men to Himself.

His being lifted up, will result in His drawing people from every tribe, tongue and language to Himself.
For salvation.
His being lifted up is going to result in a drawing of His sheep to Himself.

The Crowd’s response to he Plan

John 12:34 NASB95
The crowd then answered Him, “We have heard out of the Law that the Christ is to remain forever; and how can You say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?”
Yeah, but… We have heard out of the Law…
Do you hear the unbelief?
They are expecting Christ to come and set up an earthly Kingdom and stay as King forever.
Certainly, one day this will be the case in the future when Christ return for His second coming.
His first coming however is to be a sacrifice for Sin.
It seems they are forgetting
Isaiah 53:5 NASB95
But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed.
Jesus has come to do more than simply save them from Rome.
He has come to save them from sin.
The problem is they do not believe they need a Savior from sin.
John 12:35–36 NASB95
So Jesus said to them, “For a little while longer the Light is among you. Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you; he who walks in the darkness does not know where he goes. “While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of Light.” These things Jesus spoke, and He went away and hid Himself from them.
John 12:35-
Jesus is speaking of the Jews. They are seeing the Light, but they are blind to it.
They have heard His words , but they are deaf to it.
They have witnessed His works, but their hearts are hard to it.
Jesus here tells them to believe. That is the only way they will leave the realm of darkness and enter the light.
But what happens.
John 12:37 NASB95
But though He had performed so many signs before them, yet they were not believing in Him.
What a statement.
They were not believing.
They were so close, and yet they were not believing.
He has left us his word.
How often do I fail to live in light of that grace and mercy? He went to the cross for me. He was troubled for me.
Are we concerned with the the things of Christ or do we more closely identify with the world?
