Another sermon is added to our Great Commission series to close.  Unpopular Culture focuses on how Christians are at times made to feel when professing the will of God for all mankind.  It is not an easy road, people will reject you, and at times you will be alone, BUT Jesus will not leave you. It IS a hard road but it is OK.  When you have God on your side you have all that you need!

Intro

Popular Culture- (also called pop culture) is generally recognized by members of a society as a set of the practices, beliefs, and objects that are dominant or ubiquitous in a society at a given point in time.
If I were to say to you certain terms or speak about beliefs and objects it would usually identify with people from that time. It would be popular culture, things that were dominant in your time. I could mention that all adults were able to discipline you if you were doing wrong and a certain number of people would identify with this. I could mention having a conk put on your hair and people would identify. What about bell bottoms, 281-330-8004, Hot Boys, T.G.I.G, Jimmy Johnson, Black Panthers, and The Black Panther. They all mean something to someone based on the popular culture of the time. But there are things that exist within those same times that are not so memorable. And while we exist in a popular culture that is full of Drake’s music, Yeets, Presidential Tweets, and Social Media challenges. There is something that remains as unpopular culture. And that is the word of God. For Jeremiah his life was
Jeremiah Slide with the tree goes here.
Jeremiah was countercultural. He was not a part of popular culture. He did not fit in! As a young man he was approached and called by God.
Jeremiah 1:4–10 NKJV
4 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.” 6 Then said I: “Ah, Lord God! Behold, I cannot speak, for I am a youth.” 7 But the Lord said to me: “Do not say, ‘I am a youth,’ For you shall go to all to whom I send you, And whatever I command you, you shall speak. 8 Do not be afraid of their faces, For I am with you to deliver you,” says the Lord. 9 Then the Lord put forth His hand and touched my mouth, and the Lord said to me: “Behold, I have put My words in your mouth. 10 See, I have this day set you over the nations and over the kingdoms, To root out and to pull down, To destroy and to throw down, To build and to plant.”
And so Jeremiah accepts this call from God. To proclaim to God’s people that they have been disobedient, God is not happy with it, and destruction will soon come for them too. Jeremiah is a prophet that uses object lessons in his ministry. He is called by God at one point to go to the potter’s house to observe.
Jeremiah 18:1–11 NKJV
1 The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying: 2 “Arise and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause you to hear My words.” 3 Then I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was, making something at the wheel. 4 And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter; so he made it again into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to make. 5 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 6 “O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter?” says the Lord. “Look, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel! 7 The instant I speak concerning a nation and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, to pull down, and to destroy it, 8 if that nation against whom I have spoken turns from its evil, I will relent of the disaster that I thought to bring upon it. 9 And the instant I speak concerning a nation and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it, 10 if it does evil in My sight so that it does not obey My voice, then I will relent concerning the good with which I said I would benefit it. 11 “Now therefore, speak to the men of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord: “Behold, I am fashioning a disaster and devising a plan against you. Return now every one from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good.” ’ ”
God had used Jeremiah to also give a warning beforehand. They had already done evil and were going to be punished but God says that He has the ability to change the course of things. In the next verse you see that they choose to not listen and ultimately talk bad about him.
Jeremiah 18:12 NKJV
12 And they said, “That is hopeless! So we will walk according to our own plans, and we will every one obey the dictates of his evil heart.”
And so God decided that he would punish the people. He compared them to a flask made by a potter. He said he would turn His back on them in their calamity. God had Jeremiah to break a clay jar to represent what he was going to do with Israel.
As it turns out the message of God through the prophet was not the most popular message. It was not a dominant thought among God’s people to be obedient. They wanted to hear God’s word but had no intention of obeying. And that is what brings us to the text for today. Elijah is at a point to where he has bought in to the word of God, has been an obedient participant in God’s word, but now he faces problems due to his calling. His situation fits in with us today who have bought in to the plan of salvation, been baptized, have become disciples, and now we share a message with the world that has never been a part of popular culture!

Walk It Talk It

Jeremiah 20:7–8 NKJV
7 O Lord, You induced me, and I was persuaded; You are stronger than I, and have prevailed. I am in derision daily; Everyone mocks me. 8 For when I spoke, I cried out; I shouted, “Violence and plunder!” Because the word of the Lord was made to me A reproach and a derision daily.
God convinced him and he was persuaded.
How that correlates to us
Convinced
People deride and mock him.
Jeremiah is seen as worthless and what he takes seriously no one else takes serious!
Popular Culture
He does what he is supposed to by speaking God’s word.
But being obedient causes him to face trials and tribulation.
Can’t win for losing...

Never Gonna Give You Up

Jeremiah 20:9–10 NKJV
9 Then I said, “I will not make mention of Him, Nor speak anymore in His name.” But His word was in my heart like a burning fire Shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back, And I could not. 10 For I heard many mocking: “Fear on every side!” “Report,” they say, “and we will report it!” All my acquaintances watched for my stumbling, saying, “Perhaps he can be induced; Then we will prevail against him, And we will take our revenge on him.”
“I will not make mention of Him...” “Nor speak anymore in His name.”
Because of the issues that he is going through he tries to convince himself not to do what God called him to do.
When in sorrow one’s own heart can be their biggest enemy.
“But His word WAS in my heart...”
Thank God for His word and the effect on our life!
Once we have known His word and have been obedient, it then has a lasting effect on our hearts.
This had a profound effect on his life.
WHEN THE WORD OF GOD WAS BEING DROWNED OUT BY THE LAUGHING AND MOCKING OF THE CHILDREN OF SATAN HIS PAST ACTIONS
“Shut up in my bones”
IT WAS INTENSE!
“I was weary of holding it back”
It was tiring for him and he could not hold it back.

Fortunate

Jeremiah 20:11–13 NKJV
11 But the Lord is with me as a mighty, awesome One. Therefore my persecutors will stumble, and will not prevail. They will be greatly ashamed, for they will not prosper. Their everlasting confusion will never be forgotten. 12 But, O Lord of hosts, You who test the righteous, And see the mind and heart, Let me see Your vengeance on them; For I have pleaded my cause before You. 13 Sing to the Lord! Praise the Lord! For He has delivered the life of the poor From the hand of evildoers.
